Maps, line drawings and information about the towns and villages describe the glorious countryside of southern England that could be seen from the windows of The Cornish Riviera Express. This new edition includes 20 pages from Bradshaw's Railway timetables at the time this book was first published.  Do you yearn for the days when train journeys were a pleasure? The creaking timbers of the carriages; the aroma of steam and smoke; the rattle and clank of points and the sudden sound of the whistle as you pass an unmanned crossing? This was when the sedate pace of the train, with windows held open by a thick leather strap, allowed time to watch the world go by. How much more you could see in those days!  This book was published by The GWR to help their customers enjoy the experience. Each spread has a map and exquisite line drawings describing about six miles of the journey with charming descriptions of the 'long swift journey from London to Land's End that has about it a certain savour of romance, a spice of adventure, which no amount of familiarity of railway travelling can destroy'. We read of 'The Grand Junction Canal with bridges, barges and ducks all doing their best to make it picturesque'; crossing the Thames by the widest brick spanned bridge in the world and seeing the river crowded with punts and rowing boats; hurrying through Royal Berkshire where The River Kennet 'serpentines through a landscape too flat to offer any resistance to its whims and fancies'. Across 'the forbidding expanse of Salisbury Plain', beside The White Horse of Westbury and over the flat lands of Sedgemoor. A glimpse of Exeter Cathedral and the first sight of the sea! On beneath the rugged hills of Dartmoor to the 'tangled forest of shipping in Plymouth Sound'. Over Brunel's 'vast piece of imagination' the Royal Albert Bridge into Cornwall with palms on the platforms and viaducts over wooded valleys. Sandy beaches, rocky headlands and majestic St. Michael's Mount arriving at Penzance in time for tea. This beautifully written book describes more than a wonderful railway journey for it allows us a peep at the great swathe of southern Britain that was so well served by The Great Western Railway.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49520811671825,"sku":"GOR003371161","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50262585606417,"sku":"GOR007980604","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50320548167953,"sku":"GOR006336918","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52925519724817,"sku":"GOR001927065","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/187359075X.jpg?v=1751249210"},{"product_id":"through-the-window-book-great-western-railway-9781872640334","title":"Through the Window","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49575496614161,"sku":"GOR002692953","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50514393137425,"sku":"GOR001688670","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1872640338.jpg?v=1751060929"},{"product_id":"cathedrals-rare-book-great-western-railway-1707308625dpb","title":"Cathedrals","description":"First Edition. 119 pages. Few other journeys conjure up such an air of romance as The Great Western Railway route from London Paddington to Penzance. It was the line that headed across the glorious countryside of southern Britain delivering millions of people to the holiday destinations of Devon and Cornwall. But apart from the understandable enthusiasm for the destination it holds a very real fascination for all railway enthusiasts for this is the route that Brunel built taking in his remarkable Thames bridge; the site of his experiment with an atmospheric railway in South Devon; the Royal Albert Bridge that carries the line over the Tamar into Cornwall; the famous slip coaches that enabled passengers to alight without impeding the progress of The Cornish Riviera Express and of course the famous restaurant cars. And throughout the 305 miles, remarkable engineering feats making economical use of the varied contours of the many hills and valleys that straddle southern Britain. This map, first published by the GWR in 1924 in book form in Through the Window, is now reissued in colour in a strip form that measures over 14 feet (4.26 metres) in length with additional historical railway information. It shows the route winding its carefully planned way through the cities and towns that were lucky to be served by the GWR. Features that could be seen from the window are described, branch lines leaving the main line are marked and historical railway facts and distances are noted.  An introduction describes both the development and heyday of this remarkable railway line.  What better way to plan a journey to your favourite holiday destination in the great days of the steam railway?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52085239513361,"sku":"GOR006885366","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781873590850.jpg?v=1756815804"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-great-western-railway.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
