It imagines a numinous dream of the character Homer-Outis (the bard of the Odyssey) in which he converses with the spirit of his revered ancestor, Odysseus (the protagonist of the Odyssey), on crucial events following his return to Ithaca. To avoid awful armed conflicts against the slain suitors' revolting families, Odysseus takes a life-long exile. His devoted wise wife, Penelope, decides to join with Odysseus. They transform the fateful exile into eventful adventures to learn of the mystery of human nature. It consists of two books: Book 1: Into a Dream of Homer-Outis. Fire had engulfed the Arkansas Negro Boys Industrial School in Wrightsville, thirteen miles outside of Little Rock. Her son Lindsey had been confined there since January 14, after a judge for juveniles found him guilty of stealing from a neighborhood store owner. To her horror, Lindsey was not among the forty-eight boys who had clawed their way through the windows of the dormitory to safety. Instead, he was among the twenty-one boys between the ages of thirteen and seventeen who burned to death. Black Boys Burning presents a focused explanation of how systemic poverty perpetuated by white supremacy sealed the fate of those students. A careful telling of the history of the school and fire, the book provides readers a fresh understanding of the broad implications of white supremacy. Grif Stockley's research adds to an evolving understanding of the Jim Crow South, Arkansas's history, the lawyers who capitalized on this tragedy, and the African American victims. In hindsight, the disaster at Wrightsville could have been predicted. Immediately after the fire, an unsigned editorial in the Arkansas Democrat noted long-term deterioration, including the wiring, of the buildings. After the Central High School desegregation crisis in 1957, the boys' deaths eighteen months later were once again an embarrassment to Arkansas. The fire and its circumstances should have provoked southerners to investigate the realities of their \"\"separate but equal institutions.\"\" However, white supremacy ruled the investigations, and the grand jury declared the event to be an anomaly.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50386945343761,"sku":"CIN1496834526G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52410213695761,"sku":"NLS9781496834522","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1496834526.jpg?v=1763473356"},{"product_id":"blood-in-their-eyes-book-grif-stockley-9781682261361","title":"Blood in Their Eyes","description":"On September 30, 1919, local law enforcement in rural Phillips County, Arkansas, attacked black sharecroppers at a meeting of the Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America. The next day, hundreds of white men from the Delta, along with US Army troops, converged on the area 'with blood in their eyes.' What happened next was one of the deadliest incidents of racial violence in the history of the United States, leaving a legacy of trauma and silence that has persisted for more than a century. In the wake of the massacre, the NAACP and Little Rock lawyer Scipio Jones spearheaded legal action that revolutionized due process in America. The first edition of Grif Stockley's Blood in Their Eyes, published in 2001, brought renewed attention to the Elaine Massacre and sparked valuable new studies on racial violence and exploitation in Arkansas and beyond. With contributions from fellow historians Brian K. Mitchell and Guy Lancaster, this revised edition draws from recently uncovered source material and explores in greater detail the actions of the mob, the lives of those who survived the massacre, and the regime of fear and terror that prevailed under Jim Crow.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50388840513809,"sku":"CIN1682261360G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51045739659537,"sku":"NIN9781682261361","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":53129763684625,"sku":"CIN1682261360LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53242498810129,"sku":"CIN1682261360VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53610404675857,"sku":"GOR014979961","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1682261360.jpg?v=1763479522"},{"product_id":"blood-in-their-eyes-book-grif-stockley-9781557287724","title":"Blood in Their Eyes","description":"Winner of the 2002 Booker Worthen Literary Prize American Association of State and Local History Award 2003 In late September 1919, black sharecroppers met to protest unfair settlements for their cotton crops from white plantation owners. Local law enforcement broke up the union's meeting, and the next day a thousand white men from the Delta—and troops of the U.S. Army itself—converged on Phillips County, Arkansas, to \"put down\" the black sharecroppers' \"insurrection.\" In riveting, novelistic prose, writer and Delta native Grif Stockley considers the evidence and tells the full story of this incident for the first time, concluding that black people were murdered in Elaine by white mobs and federal soldiers. Five white men died as a result of the conflict; contemporary estimates of African American deaths ranged from 20 to an even more horrifying 856. White officials jailed hundreds of black workers, torturing some of them. Twelve black men were charged with first-degree murder. Their legal battles lasted six years, but national and local silence has persisted much longer. Stockley takes on this silence and shows that it resulted from sustained official efforts to convince the public that only blacks who had resisted lawful authority were killed. He shows too that it is part of a larger silence in which the fear and terror that were the daily staples of the African American experience have been summed up all too easily in the term \"Jim Crow\" in a failure to fully confront the anguish of the period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50823054459153,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50823057277201,"sku":"CIN1557287724VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53001968255249,"sku":"CIN1557287724G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1557287724.jpg?v=1751180741"},{"product_id":"race-relations-in-the-natural-state-book-grif-stockley-9780970857453","title":"Race Relations in the Natural State","description":"In this book noted Arkansas historian Grif Stockley (\"Blood in Their Eyes\", \"Daisy Bates\") presents a clear depiction of the struggles of race and class in Arkansas, using personal stories to give a deeper understanding of the price of racism in Arkansas.
