Frequently performing in front of large raucous crowds, pedestriennes walked on makeshift tracks set-up in reconfigured theatres and opera houses. Top pedestrennes often earned more money in one week than the average American took home in a year. Newspapers reported on their achievements and interviewed the champions. Their walking outfi ts became fashion plates, their pictures were sold in stores and they made personal appearances as national celebrities. The pedestriennes' exploits reshaped the country's attitudes about what women could accomplish and established the foundation for modern sports, the revival of the Olympic Games and the suffragist movement.
About the Author>
In his 20 year writing career, Harry Hall's work has appeared in several publications, including Runner-Triathlete News, Mayborn magazine and The Dallas Morning News. Everyone is Staring at Me
You have occasionally stood in front of an audience, mouth dry, palms sweaty, brain only operating on about 25% capacity, and struggled through a speech. Afterward, you weren't even concerned about effectiveness as much as relief that the ordeal is over. After a handful of similar ordeals, you are left with one conclusion, I'm just not a public speaker. The result is that you shied away from many other opportunities to promote yourself or your company, and you know you have suffered from that fear either personally, professionally, or both. So you have chosen to sit on the sidelines and watch others do what you only wish you could, if you had the talent. Maybe you do and you just don't realize it. Were you ever trained? Did anyone ever talk to you about how or what to do? Or how to present yourself in front of a crowd? Has anyone covered the basics of not just how to deliver a speech, but how to get the audience on your side before you take control of the floor? What are the audience's expectations? If you don't know that, then you are left to guess at meeting them. To get that education puts a great deal of power on your side and increases your confidence. That's what this book does, gives you an insider's view from someone with more than 20 years in the communications industry on what audience expects, and how you can meet or in many ways exceed their expectations. Whether you are a novice, semi-experienced or even a professional, this book has tips, guidelines, and even material that will help you improve as a speaker.
Each page of This Used to be Dallas will challenge your view of the city around you. Harry Hall uncovers the stories of perseverance, deliverance, tragedy, and past glory behind Dallas buildings that were once something else. It might be a fallen dream, such as the remnants of a waterpark that briefly dazzled locals in the early twentieth century; or a coffin supply company that once advertised services, Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There's the hotel that was built only after the city yielded to the demands of a beer baron and the non-descript Oak Cliff home that once housed America's greatest female athlete. What might your favorite Dallas buildings house in the future? Each structure has its own background, its own future, its own story. Explore your favorite Dallas spots with a new vision, or discover a surprising past just beyond the familiar walls of the fascinating places throughout the city.
