Questions that hitherto were rarely posed publicly must now be posed, and the human drama born out of exile, bondage, and genocide must be reckoned with in a new light. These are issues that are predicated on a faithful God to whom challenging and even unanswerable questions must be voiced. So, how might the Hebrew prophets address such contemporary issues as imperial militarism, eminent domain, trust and trauma, hunger and power, memory and shame, blame and self-critique, madness and exceptionalism? The daring words of the Hebrew prophets must have voices of testimony and witness in our time. This book speaks to that challenge. Hemchand Gossai has gathered key emphases from the prophetic corpus with remarkable clarity and enabled a sharp and thoughtful connection to contemporary issues. The prophets live again in this insightful book  --Terence Fretheim, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN The voice of the Hebrew prophets advocating justice and equality for all humans in rebuke of the beneficiaries of exploitative economics and retaliatory force comes to piercing clarity in Gossai's book. His hermeneutic of engagement draws the ancestral pioneers of Scripture and their modern heirs into a rigorous theopolitical discourse eschewing definitive solutions while denying the other popular alternative of dismissing ancient texts as expired and irrelevant. --Paul D. Hanson, Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA With wonderful lucidity, Gossai takes the concerns of Israel's ancient prophets to the global marketplace today. He underscores the self-destructive, violent nature of the 'empire' then and now, and challenges readers to connect with the prophetic word so as to act prophetically, imaginatively, and responsibly in the face of pervasive inequities. Gossai has blared a wake-up call to us all, especially to those engaged in self-serving personal, political, social, religious, or intellectual efforts. --Carol J. Dempsey, University of Portland, Portland, OR Hemchand Gossai is Associate Dean of Liberal Arts at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale. The question is why, and now what. The principal aim of this volume is to provide additional interpretive lenses through which themes of hope and redemption might be seen from a range of biblical and literary texts. Thus, the volume will explore a range of texts, characters, and ideas--from Antigone and Jephthah's daughter to Nabal to the parable of the good Samaritan, from Tobit and Ruth to ideas such as charity and trauma. So, this is a time to Take Heart. In the use of the unusual term Resouling the study emphasizes and accentuates nefhesh. Resouling underlines the possibility of being refreshed after an existential or even routine reality of pain or injustice. The study seeks to understand the possibility of new beginnings, where text and new contexts intersect and shape one another. This study will further enrich the manner in which biblical texts continue to speak to a range of societies and peoples, applying universal themes of social justice and belonging while challenging a status quo that thrives on otherness.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50398738972945,"sku":"CIN1666719943G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51294803460369,"sku":"NIN9781666719949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52406296641809,"sku":"NLS9781666719949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1666719943.jpg?v=1750928618"},{"product_id":"barrenness-and-blessing-book-hemchand-gossai-9781556352928","title":"Barrenness and Blessing","description":"Description: The themes of these stories are profoundly human themes, capturing the persistent interaction between God and humankind. These narratives invite us to witness the manner in which God enters human community in all of its complexities, struggles, challenges, fears, and ultimately hope. As the narratives unfold, not only is it clear that God will not be restricted by societal and cultural conventions, but the human journey will be generated by faith and doubt, fear and hope, promise and fulfillment. Hemchand Gossai not only explores the various themes within a variety of texts, but maintains a constant eye on the implications for the church and contemporary readers. In this regard, some of the literal and particular experiences such as barrenness, wilderness, and wrestling with God are examined as metaphors for our experiences. The richness and texture of metaphors allow us to embrace these stories in a way that makes them our stories. Endorsements: Hemchand Gossai has long been working on the stories of Abraham and Sarah with great clarity, literary sensitivity, and theological savvy. In this volume, he expands upon that journey with new studies regarding God, the human characters, and their interrelationships. Gathering the major themes from these narratives, Gossai presents them in such a way that Israel's stories can speak once again into the complexities of our interreligious world. With an interpretive trajectory that moves from the margin to the center, this book gives voice to the marginalized and voiceless in the Abraham Narratives. Further, this approach is based on the premise that there is a continuum of power in the various characters in these narratives and that the most powerful are those who are lodged at the center while those with the least power are on the margin or beyond. The intent of this study is to direct and perhaps re-direct our attention to the text and with fresh eyes seek a sometimes radical realignment of roles and power. It is true that many of the characters focused on in this book are women. This is not, however, only a book about women, though clearly women are the principal characters on the margin. Endorsements: Gossai is a bold poser of new questions. And when new questions are asked of the text, fresh readings become available. In Gossai's capable hands, there are no innocent texts. Now there are hidden writs of power that pervade the text. Gossai invites the reader to the thickness of the text that cuts beneath surface meanings to where real life-and-death issues are exposed. This is a perennial issue in Christianity and a variety of answers have of course been given over time. Perhaps the most profound answer to this question in the twentieth century came from Brevard S. Childs, an Old Testament professor, whose ‘canonical approach’ sought to redefi ne how the Bible is used in the Church.      Childs’ Canonical Approach: A Critical Assessment provides a fresh study of Childs’ approach from the perspective of biblical studies. It makes two arguments that break new ground. Firstly, it argues that Childs’ approach consists of three main elements that were variously developed and implemented over time: the theory of canonical shaping; the prioritization of the canonical texts; and the search for the Bible’s subject matter. Secondly, it argues that, though rich and informed, these elements are ultimately unjustifiable and thus that the canonical approach is a failure.      This book provides an insightful contribution to the ongoing academic debate on Childs’ canonical approach. It is also an excellent primer for students interested in Childs, or who are generally considering how to read the Bible theologically.   The ‘canonical approach’ to the Bible pioneered by Brevard S. Childs appeals to many Christians who want to understand Scripture as a coherent and self-consistent work in the form it now has - however it came into being. In this dissenting examination of ‘canonical reading’ Robert Brown shows that it comes at too high a price, obscuring the diversity of Scripture and flattening it out. Those attracted by the approach, as a way of finding positive and constructive teaching in the Bible, will be forced to look critically at its possible drawbacks too. A clear and incisive critique of a much-lauded current fashion in biblical interpretation, seen by many as a way to ‘reclaim’ the Bible for the church.   —(John Barton, FBA, Emeritus Oriel \u0026amp; Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, University of Oxford, and Senior Research Fellow of Campion Hall, Oxford)   The task of reuniting biblical studies and theology is a crucial one for both disciplines, at least for those, like Robert Brown, who seek to understand how the scriptures speak to them of God. For many, the work of Brevard Childs has seemed to be the magic bullet, but his work is too often misunderstood by admirer and detractor alike. This careful study addresses these misunderstandings with clarity and precision, offers a much-needed analysis of the central concept of ‘canonical shaping’, and suggests ways forward that unite the synchronic and the historical-critical approaches. It is essential reading for anyone aspiring to do biblical theology in the 21st century.   —(Richard Ounsworth, Fellow and Tutor in Scripture at Blackfriars, Oxford)","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52123298627857,"sku":"NLS9781433197789","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433197789.jpg?v=1757448854"},{"product_id":"peace-and-peacemaking-in-paul-and-the-greco-roman-world-book-hemchand-gossai-9781433115660","title":"Peace and Peacemaking in Paul and the Greco-Roman World","description":"Peace and Peacemaking in Paul and the Greco-Roman World compares the Apostle Paul's understanding of peace with various conceptions of peace in the Greco-Roman thought world of the first century. A diachronic survey of dream records in the Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Jewish, Greco-Roman, and Second Temple writings reveals that dream narratives fall into two major categories: message dreams and symbolic dreams. Every dream carries a distinct narrative function according to the objectives of the user. Typically, symbolic dreams appear in epic-like literature, and message dreams appear in narratives such as historical and religious writings.  The present analysis of the five dream accounts of Matthew 1:18-2:23 reveals that they fall into the message dream category. Each dream has at least one narrative function. In other words, Matthew does not merely record the dream experiences of the individuals but uses dreams to achieve his narrative objective.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135700791569,"sku":"NLS9781433116254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433116254.jpg?v=1757550433"},{"product_id":"im-polite-jesus-book-carlos-olivares-9781433134425","title":"The (Im)Polite Jesus","description":"The (Im)Polite Jesus is an informed, focused, deep and creative analysis of the topic of (im)politeness applied to Jesus in Matthew's Gospel with in-depth conclusions and analysis about the Matthean Jesus' (im)politeness.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135946486033,"sku":"NLS9781433134425","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433134425.jpg?v=1757551778"},{"product_id":"facets-of-pauline-discourse-in-christocentric-and-christotelic-perspective-book-dan-lioy-9781433134234","title":"Facets of Pauline Discourse in Christocentric and Christotelic Perspective","description":"In this thought-provoking study, Dan Lioy asserts that a Christocentric and Christotelic perspective is an unmistakable feature of Paul's discourse.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136075264273,"sku":"NLS9781433134234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433134234.jpg?v=1757552447"},{"product_id":"from-john-of-apamea-to-mark-s-gospel-book-dempsey-rosales-acosta-9781433126161","title":"From John of Apamea to Mark's Gospel","description":"From John of Apamea to Mark's Gospel: Two Dialogues with Thomasios: A Hermeneutical Reading of Horao, Blepo, and Theoreo combines two theological fields of investigation. First-century media culture is probed by assessing the dynamics of literacy, orality, aurality, and performance in the Gospels, parts of the Pauline corpus, and also Jewish apocalyptic literature. The audience constructs of informed, minimal, and competent assist the interpreter to apply the methodology. Sound maps and an aural-performance commentary of Revelation 1 and 11 are developed that analyze aural markers, sound style, identity markers, repetition, themes, and the appropriation of the message by the audience. The author deftly combines the methods of metaphor theory and intertextuality to explain the vital but often overlooked conundrum that Zion in Deutero-Isaiah is an innocent mother, unlike the adulterous wife in other prophetic books. This interpretation offers a vital corrective to the view of women in the biblical context. As a result of this usage, Deutero-Isaiah paradoxically presents Yahweh the Creator as the one who gives birth to the people, not mother Zion. This understanding explains the concentration of gynomorphic imagery used for God in this prophetic book, providing a counterbalance to patriarchal perspectives of God. Finally, a fresh insight is offered into the ongoing debate between universalism and nationalism in Deutero-Isaiah, based on the premise that as a symbol of Zion theology, mother Zion represents Yahweh’s universal sovereignty rather than a nationalistic ethnicity. Mother Zion in Deutero-Isaiah is an invaluable resource in courses that deal with issues in Isaiah, biblical interpretation, and feminist hermeneutics, especially regarding the feminine personification of Zion and the maternal imagery of God.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136284455185,"sku":"NLS9781433121579","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433121579.jpg?v=1757553615"},{"product_id":"worship-and-the-risen-jesus-in-the-pauline-letters-book-tony-costa-9781433122903","title":"Worship and the Risen Jesus in the Pauline Letters","description":"Worship and the Risen Jesus in the Pauline Letters approaches the subject of Christian worship in respect to its origins from the perspective of the earliest New Testament writer: Paul. This mixed category, if supported by empirical investigation to be more original than the Alexandrian and Byzantine texts, could necessitate the re-evaluation of these established text-types and also the re-evaluation of the designation «mixed» attributed to this group.  In pursuit of this objective, Clinton S. Baldwin undertakes an in-depth study of this mixed phenomenon by studying 407 Greek manuscripts of the Catholic Epistles. Having identified 13 mixed groups across the Catholic Epistles, it is shown that the weighted value of this mixed category is negligible in terms of uncovering the earliest originals. Also of significance to this study is the use of factor analysis for the classification of New Testament Greek manuscripts. The reliability of factor analysis is demonstrated by another vital contribution of this study: the classification of the manuscripts of the Epistle of Jude, a book which hither-to-fore had not been comprehensively classified. Most of the manuscripts classified by factor analysis have later been confirmed by a modified form of the Claremont Profile Method. Finally, The So-Called Mixed Text demonstrates that the evolution of the New Testament text, which began in the earlier centuries, continued into the Middle Ages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138713350417,"sku":"NLS9781433107559","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433107559.jpg?v=1757564667"},{"product_id":"social-critique-by-israel-s-eighth-century-prophets-book-hemchand-gossai-9781597526302","title":"Social Critique by Israel's Eighth-Century Prophets","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52142444511505,"sku":"NLS9781597526302","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52752722985233,"sku":"NIN9781597526302","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781597526302.jpg?v=1757580185"},{"product_id":"patterns-of-movement-in-the-hebrew-psalter-book-yung-hun-choi-9781433179433","title":"Patterns of Movement in the Hebrew Psalter","description":"The author re-examines the movements in the Hebrew Psalter as a whole, \"from laments to praises\" and \"from psalms of individual to those of community,\" indicated by Westermann (1977) and Gottwald (1985). In general, these movements are widely observable, however, there are some contradictory data upon closer inspection. Namely, some laments are assembled at the end and in fact many psalms of community appear in the middle. This motivated the author to launch a holistic structural study. In this book, the author demonstrates that the movements are not specified in a linear design but a progressive parallel pattern, crossing over the fivefold doxological division. The movements foreshadowed between Psalms 1 and 2 unfold in the specific psalms-groups and in the tripartite division. Each psalms-group exhibits the movements \"from distress (lament) through deepest sorrow to joy (praise),\" \"from individual (through Israel) to nations,\" \"from present\/past to future,\" \"from (the city of) Israel through Sheol\/death to Zion,\" \"from Mosaic covenant to Davidic one\" and \"from the flawed human (Davidic) kingship through Messianic to YHWH’s kingship.\" The \"answer and certainty\" of Psalms 1–2 reappear at the end of each group. With an interpretive trajectory that moves from the margin to the center, this book gives voice to the marginalized and voiceless in the Abraham Narratives. Further, this approach is based on the premise that there is a continuum of power in the various characters in these narratives and that the most powerful are those who are lodged at the center while those with the least power are on the margin or beyond. The intent of this study is to direct and perhaps re-direct our attention to the text and with fresh eyes seek a sometimes radical realignment of roles and power. Previous scholarship has produced a confusingly diverse and contradictory array of competing interpretations of this much-debated verse. The present work, which will prove immensely valuable to every scholar, pastor, and serious student interested in this question, carefully walks the reader through the interpretive issues. The book offers a more extensive survey of the history of interpretation of John 20:22 than that found in other works on Johannine pneumatology. It includes extensive exegetical analysis of the related motifs of the glorification of Jesus and eternal life as well as every passage in the Gospel of John mentioning the Spirit. The impartation of the Spirit on Resurrection Day is here clarified in terms of the nature of the gift itself, how this relates to Pentecost, and how this impartation constitutes a momentous step forward in the outworking of God’s unfolding plan in the history of redemption.   \"With this monograph, Adrian Rosen has produced a meticulously researched and immensely valuable analysis of John 20:22 and, more generally, John’s pneumatology. Rosen helpfully highlights the central issues in current scholarly discussion of Johannine pneumatology, including how we should understand Jesus’s glorification in John 7:39 and the nature of the relationship between the life-giving function of the Spirit, so clearly described in John 3–7, the Paraclete promises in John 14–16, and the bestowal of the Spirit in John 20:22. Duke concludes that 4Q543–547 was written by a disenfranchised group of priests who resided in Hebron. The importance of the patriarchal burials, chronology, endogamy, the figure of Moses, and angelology argue for a priestly group, whose members were also influenced by apocalyptic thinking. The suggestion of Hebron as the geographical location for this group is based on the theories of George Nickelsburg’s and David Suter’s work on 1 Enoch. Pre-Hasmonean Judaism was an intense time of dialogue and disagreement, and 4Q543–547 is one more item to consider in reconstructing these social realities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472065130769,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472065851665,"sku":"NLS9781433107894","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433107894.jpg?v=1759837334"},{"product_id":"who-should-be-king-in-israel-book-travis-trost-9781433111518","title":"Who Should Be King in Israel?","description":"Who Should Be King in Israel? attempts to link common messianic issues found in some Dead Sea Scrolls with the Gospel of John. These messianic issues are studied in relation to the political situation facing the Johannine community in dealing with the Roman empire. The readers\/hearers of the Fourth Gospel had to deal with different challenges from the Roman government and the non-Christian Jewish community in the era between the Jewish Revolt and the Bar-Kochba Revolt. Jesus is presented as the new David, the Son of God, who is the solution to all of humanity’s problems. The fall of the Temple in 70 CE had created a political and religious situation that meant early Christians of the post-70 CE socio-political environment had to deal with Roman suspicion and Jewish disappointment. The Fourth Gospel uses vocabulary and imagery designed to communicate the message that Jesus is the Christ without inflaming either Roman or Jewish sensibilities. This book is written in a manner designed to deal intelligently with that difficult era in Christian history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472068112657,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472068833553,"sku":"NLS9781433111518","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433111518.jpg?v=1759837342"},{"product_id":"psycho-spiritual-view-on-the-message-of-jesus-in-the-gospels-book-wali-van-lohuizen-9781433106583","title":"A Psycho-Spiritual View on the Message of Jesus in the Gospels","description":"A Psycho-Spiritual View on the Message of Jesus in the Gospels","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472069488913,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472070013201,"sku":"NLS9781433106583","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433106583.jpg?v=1759837345"},{"product_id":"biblical-theology-of-gerassapience-book-joel-aa-ajayi-9781433107856","title":"A Biblical Theology of Gerassapience","description":"A Biblical Theology of Gerassapience","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472071258385,"sku":"NLS9781433107856","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433107856.jpg?v=1759837349"},{"product_id":"axis-of-glory-book-dan-lioy-9781433110122","title":"Axis of Glory","description":"Axis of Glory","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472072896785,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472073355537,"sku":"NLS9781433110122","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433110122.jpg?v=1759837355"},{"product_id":"pauline-metaphors-of-the-holy-spirit-book-hemchand-gossai-9781433106910","title":"The Pauline Metaphors of the Holy Spirit","description":"An interpreter of Paul must understand his metaphors in order to arrive at a complete understanding of the Pauline pneumatological perspective. Most of the argument has focused on its assumed eschatological connotations and Jesus’ adherence or deviation from these ideas. Within the North American context, the debate is dominated by the work of Norman Perrin, whose classification of the kingdom of God as a myth-evoking symbol remains one of the fundamental assumptions of scholarship. According to Perrin, Jesus’ understanding of the kingdom of God is founded upon the myth of God acting as king on behalf of Israel as described in the Hebrew Bible.   Moving Beyond Symbol and Myth challenges Perrin’s classification, and advocates the reclassification of the kingdom of God as metaphor. Drawing upon insights from the cognitive theory of metaphor, this study examines all the occurrences of the ‘God is king’ metaphor within the literary context of the Hebrew Bible. Based on this review, it is proposed that the ‘God is king’ metaphor functions as a true metaphor with a range of expressions and meanings. It is employed within a variety of texts and conveys images of God as the covenantal sovereign of Israel; God as the eternal suzerain of the world, and God as the king of the disadvantaged. The interaction of the semantic fields of divinity and human kingship evoke a range of metaphoric expressions that are utilized throughout the history of the Hebrew Bible in response to differing socio-historical contexts and within a range of rhetorical strategies. It is this diversity inherent in the ‘God is king’ metaphor that is the foundation for the diversified expressions of the kingdom of God associated with the historical Jesus and early Christianity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472081088785,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472081678609,"sku":"NLS9780820486611","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780820486611.jpg?v=1759837378"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-hemchand-gossai.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
