Wherever you go in the county, you are never far away from a reminder of those wartime years. Weston-super-Mare and Bath experienced the worst of the bombing, but there are many other stories to tell. In this book, old images show the county at war and full-colour modern images demonstrate what remains today of Somerset's wartime landscape. In Somerset at War Through Time, we see coastal defences at places like Brean Down and Steep Holm, and the airfields at Weston Zoyland and Merryfield. This proposal combines the memories of those who were young at the time with historical research to examine the major factors influencing wartime childhood and development.  There are stories by people from many different backgrounds and areas of Britain but all had in common the fact they were children during this unique period. At a time when children were in mortal danger because of daily attacks on British soil, measures taken to protect them included gasmasks, air-raid shelters and the blackout. Schooling was interrupted and the land became an island fortress as military equipment and installations appeared everywhere, both in cities and in small villages. Fathers and other family members were often away from home, serving in the armed forces, but children too could ‘do their bit’ for the war effort. Others recall the experiences of evacuation and their feelings at the time, which extended from a sense of security to fear of abuse.  This book looks, too, at the toys that were played with, the games enjoyed, the clubs that could be joined, and the entertainment and information that was on offer. A roller-coaster of emotions ranges from the horror of nightmare attacks on London and other cities to the exuberant relief which accompanied the final victory and the return home of loved ones.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49532047196433,"sku":"GOR005616854","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50840521965841,"sku":"GOR005036274","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50927853699345,"sku":"GOR010143368","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860775713.jpg?v=1766659446"},{"product_id":"lost-villages-book-henry-buckton-9781845116712","title":"The Lost Villages","description":"Across Britain there are more than 3,000 lost villages once-thriving communities that time and fortune have reduced to ivy-clad remnants and weather-worn ruins. Bestselling author Henry Buckton goes in search of some of the Britain's more recent lost villages: Hallsands in Devon, swept away in a violent storm; the communities of Vatersay and Mingulay, in Scotland, victims to the changing fortunes of the local laird; and the picture-perfect village of Imber in Wiltshire, requisitioned for the nation in time of war but never given back. The German forces that had attacked through the Netherlands, Belgium and the Ardennes into France on 10 May had rapidly driven to the English Channel, reaching the coast at Noyelles-sur-Mer on 20 May and trapping the BEF, French forces and the remnants of the Belgian army. BEF commander Lord Gort immediately began to plan for his forces to withdraw towards Dunkirk, the nearest location with good port facilities. Between 27 May and 4 June, ships from the Royal Navy, the Merchant Navy, France, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as the famous Little Ships evacuated almost 340,000 Allied troops from Dunkirk and brought them back to Britain. However, the Dunkirk evacuation was not the end. In Operation Cycle just over 11,000 Allied troops were evacuated from the port of Le Havre between 10 and 13 June. Later still, in Operation Ariel, another 190,000 troops and between 30,000 and 40,000 civilians would be evacuated between 15 and 25 June from ports along France's western coast including Brest, Saint-Nazaire and Bordeaux. This evacuation would see the greatest loss of life in a British ship when the Luftwaffe bombed and sank the troop ship Lancastria in the estuary of the Loire. In this book, author Henry Buckton examines the Dunkirk evacuation, the rapid German advance that led up to it and the evacuations that came after.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49605375557905,"sku":"GOR009116558","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51707184218385,"sku":"GOR010709136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445664828.jpg?v=1768039544"},{"product_id":"salisbury-plain-book-henry-buckton-9781860774942","title":"Salisbury Plain","description":"Salisbury Plain is the UK's largest military training area, measuring approximately 25 miles across and ten miles from top to toe. In this state of 'total war', the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it resulted in an estimated 80 million fatalities. This was particularly so just before D-Day when every town and village was bursting with American troops preparing to take part in the liberation of occupied Europe. But the story of Devon at War begins long before that and in this book we visit places that were affected at different stages of the conflict.  We learn how Plymouth and Exeter experienced some of the most devastating air attacks outside London, while even smaller communities along the South Coast suffered from the shock tactics of tip and run raids. We see the crucial part that the county's ports and harbours played in keeping Britain's Navy afloat and at the forefront of operations. And perhaps most important of all, we acknowledge the county's incalculable contribution to all aspects of Operation Overlord, on land, at sea, or in the air. Of course every community has its own story to tell but it would be impossible to include them all. The examples chosen give a good summary of what took place in Devon during those dark days when the country as a whole was fighting for its very survival.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49641304981777,"sku":"GOR006349693","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49852212117777,"sku":"GOR005921098","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49897625551121,"sku":"GOR008802390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445610000.jpg?v=1763224085"},{"product_id":"royal-british-legion-golden-book-of-remembrance-book-henry-buckton-9781852533113","title":"Royal British Legion Golden Book of Remembrance","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49683768049937,"sku":"GOR003565800","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50475245109521,"sku":"GOR002985764","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852533110.jpg?v=1751185968"},{"product_id":"dieppe-book-henry-buckton-9781398103863","title":"Dieppe","description":"The Allied assault on the German-occupied port of Dieppe in France, code-named Operation Jubilee, took place on 19 August 1942. It was a battle that lasted for less than ten hours but it has gone down in history as a military disaster, often spoken of in the same manner as the Charge of the Light Brigade and Gallipoli. The German defences had been underestimated. The numbers killed, wounded and taken prisoner at Dieppe were shockingly high and none of the main objectives were realised. The Third Reich considered the raid as a military joke and it provided a textbook of 'what not to do' in future amphibious operations.Dieppe was the largest tri-service operation ever mounted up until that point, and even if the planning for the operation was woefully inadequate, it showed that the three services could coordinate their movements under one command. Many believe that Dieppe should not be looked upon as an isolated incident because then its purpose is totally obscured by its terrible cost. Put into context, it was one in a series of raids between Dunkirk and D-Day designed to test the defences of Hitler's Atlantic Wall, the most famous and successful being the attack on St Nazaire, which is still considered to be the greatest Commando raid of all time.Author Henry Buckton has searched the voluminous records of interviews with Canadian Dieppe veterans collected by Historica Canada to shed new light on this terrible - but perhaps necessary - failure.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738719527185,"sku":"NGR9781398103863","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50439724630289,"sku":"GOR012520691","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398103861.jpg?v=1778146963"},{"product_id":"yesterday-s-country-customs-book-henry-buckton-9780752467979","title":"Yesterday's Country Customs","description":"In England today we enjoy a rich diversity of folk traditions, many of which can trace their beginnings back hundreds of years. This history of the Plain examines how the military has used and developed the area since the land was first purchased towards the end of the 19th century. It has since seen major changes in the organization of the Army, witnessed the testing and development of numerous weapon systems, and was the birthplace of Britain's military aviation. During both world wars the extensive tract was utilized by British, Commonwealth, and American troops. The Plain was also central to the development of tank warfare, and Larkhill has become synonymous with the Royal Artillery and generations of Gunners everywhere.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52773927649553,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52773927715089,"sku":"GOR011202795","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780750967396.jpg?v=1763823962"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-henry-buckton.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
