It does not solve problems, or try to, but people turn to it for solace, inspiration, stimulation to think about themselves, extensions of experience, and the shaping spirit. This poetry has fed a clearly felt hunger: the need for companionable reports on what it is like to be a Finn in this phase of the muddle for survival. But like all authentic local reports, its appeal is universal. It is very spare. Our own poetry can look baroque to the Finns, not leaving enough silence between the words. The younger poets are already moving in new directions. Inheriting a flexible common idiom, forged by the previous generation, they have been liberated.' - Herbert Lomas. Herbert Lomas's anthology traces the history of post-war Finnish poetry, showing the rise and repercussions of Finland's own revolution in poetry. In a wide-ranging introduction, he describes the poetry of all 21 writers featured in the book, and presents a detailed analysis of the two major poets with international reputations, Paavo Haavikko and Pentti Saarikoski, the most famous of the brilliant generation of 21 year-olds who led the rejuvenation of Finnish poetry in the 1950s. The selections from the towering and controversial figures of Haavikko and Saarikoski cover their whole careers. But the other poets too - ranging from Eeva-Liisa Manner (born 1921) to Satu Salminiitty (born 1959) - are comprehensively presented. Among the book's surprises are the animal parables of Kirsi Kunnas, Finland's Stevie Smith, and the satires of Jarkko Laine, whose work is fuelled by a hatred of conventional poetry and religion.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49521189028113,"sku":"GOR013625368","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49567274991889,"sku":"GOR004894266","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852241470.jpg?v=1751457393"},{"product_id":"vale-of-todmorden-book-herbert-lomas-9781900072816","title":"The Vale of Todmorden","description":"The distinguished poet, Herbert Lomas, was born and grew up in Todmorden, a small town on the Yorkshire \/ Lancashire border. His poems are urbane, sophisticated and unafraid. They deal with old histories, inner disturbances, crises, love and the failure of love. They play with a deliberate lightness of touch, blending satire with minute observation, radical perspectives and an unconventional mysticism. I have the advantage of possessing the hardback edition, now out of print. However, the paperback also sports that gorgeous painting of the sea front at Aldeburgh, the casual fellow with his bike, the sun on the water. It is a big book too: it runs to 400 pages of poems drawn from nine previously published collections, with a final section of nearly fifty uncollected pieces. So what you've got here is a lifetime of poetry. It is Herbert Lomas's whole self.... Look at the risks here and marvel at this elderly poet's method, his music, his mayhem. He is never boring. He is modestly magnificent. And you can live with him at your bedside for years.\" Helena Nelson, Ambit \"There is something strangely moving as it travels serenely from collection to collection, poem to poem.\" Tim Liardet Herbert Lomas was born in the Pennines, served with the infantry 1943-46, including two years on the North West Frontier of India, and graduated with first-class honours and an MA from Liverpool University. His Letters in the Dark was an Observer Book of the Year and his Contemporary Finnish Poetry won the Poetry Society's 1991 biennial translation award.
