Designed to encourage readers to go out and explore, a concise but extremely readable text provides the cultural and historical contexts necessary to understand the place of a building in architectural development, with the author's own line drawings illustrating important examples. Many of these are well known, while others are relatively obscure but equally rewarding or exemplary. Chapters cover the Anglo-Norman Romanesque style and the transition to Gothic, medieval parish churches, castles and houses, Tudor architecture, Jacobean domestic building, and two seminal figures in British architectural history, Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren. The story continues with 17th-century Mannerism, the Baroque, Palladianism, early examples of town planning, including Bath, Cheltenham and Edinburgh New Town, neo-Classicism and the Gothic revival, and finishes with the many movements and styles that have characterised the 20th century. Both a pocket guidebook and a compact history of architecture, Britain, a guide to architectural styles will enable anyone interested in our built heritage to see it with more knowledgeable eyes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49543746978065,"sku":"GOR002209006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49609335308561,"sku":"GOR008112771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50358373417233,"sku":"CIN0713487887VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50360772165905,"sku":"CIN0713487887G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53387883053329,"sku":"GOR002608317","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0713487887.jpg?v=1751419973"},{"product_id":"oxford-in-watercolours-book-hubert-pragnell-9781904965305","title":"Oxford in Watercolours","description":"This book evokes one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the world. Its richness and diversity are captured here in a series of skillful, atmospheric paintings. These include panoramas and detailed views, and as well as the university buildings themselves there are scenes of university life, the meadows and bustling streetscapes of the modern city. Each picture is accompanied by an authoritative text which identifies the buildings and gives details of their histories. \u003cp\u003e Hubert Pragnell is a tutor for the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education and a member of Kellogg College. To some, the prospect of travelling through a tunnel without carriage lighting, with smoke permeating the compartment and the confined noise was a horror of the new age. What might happen if we broke down or crashed into another train in the darkness? To others it was exciting, with the light from the footplate flickering against the tunnel walls or spotting the occasional glimpses of light from a ventilation shaft.  To the directors of early railway companies, planning a route was governed by expense and the most direct way. Avoiding hills could add miles but tunnelling through them could involve vast expense as the Great Western Railway found at Box and the London and Birmingham at Kilsby. Creating a cutting as an alternative was also costly not only in labour and time, but also in compensation for landowners, who opposed railways on visual and social grounds having seen their land divided by canals.  Construction involved millions of bricks or blocks of stone for sufficiently thick walls to withstand collapse. However, the entrance barely seen from the carriage window might be an impressive Italianate arch as at Primrose Hill, or a castellated portal worthy of the Middle Ages as at Bramhope.  This book sets out to tell the story of tunnelling in Britain up to about 1870, when it was a question of burrowing through earth and rock with spade and explosive powder, with the constant danger of collapse or flooding leading to injury and death. It uses contemporary accounts, from the dangers of railway travel by Dickens to the excitement of being drawn through the Liverpool Wapping Tunnel by the young composer Mendelssoln. It includes descriptions from early railway company guide books, newspapers and diaries. It also includes numerous photographs and coloured architectural elevations from railway archives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50464947994897,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50464948748561,"sku":"NGR9781399049405","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52694767501585,"sku":"GOR014581194","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1399049402.jpg?v=1751402600"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-hubert-pragnell.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
