The men and women who wrote for newspapers in the twentieth century started work in a 'Hold the front page!' atmosphere: hot metal, clicking typewriters and inky fingers.    In this fascinating collection, the latest in the Scottish Working People's History Trust series, Ian MacDougall has captured the memories of 22 veteran journalists from a wide range of newspapers all over Scotland, some local, some national. The earliest entrant started work in 1929, just before the Great Depression, the latest in the mid 1950s. Their accounts, like so much of oral history, describe a physical world we have almost lost sight of since the computer revolution. But it was a different social world too: it would be unusual for school leavers today to start work as 'copy-boys' running out for cigarettes or filling gluepots for their scary older colleagues. Journalists had to turn their hands to anything from flower shows to air raids, from Hess's landing near Eaglesham to royal visits; and women often had to fight their corner to get started as young reporters.    As journalist Neal Ascherson says in his foreword, the book contains 'a swathe of Scottish social history': virtually all these journalists made their way from humble backgrounds, drawn by the desire for an exciting rather than a safe job - and above all one full of human interest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49514796318993,"sku":"GOR007150135","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1906566631.jpg?v=1750803878"},{"product_id":"oh-ye-had-to-be-careful-book-ian-macdougall-9781862321267","title":"Oh! In this book 19 Scotswomen who served in the war tell their stories. The women, born between 1918 and 1926, and interviewed between 1998 and 2005, came from towns and villages throughout Scotland.    The 1939–45 War plucked many women from their normal lives and thrust them into very different and dangerous experiences. Leaving her job in a baker’s shop in Glasgow, one woman found herself early in 1945 on a troopship heading for Naples; another, as an officer in the WRNS, crossed the Atlantic three times. One woman escaped death when 26 of her ATS colleagues were killed at Yarmouth by a German bomber. Despite the danger, many women formed close and lasting friendships, and for some the war years were the happiest of their lives. These fascinating stories of wartime women, told in their own words, vividly convey the important and varied roles that women played during the war.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539986424081,"sku":"GOR010318170","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50726330269969,"sku":"GOR014050473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53262467825937,"sku":"GOR014841905","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/191090032X.jpg?v=1751219367"},{"product_id":"onion-johnnies-book-ian-macdougall-9781862322202","title":"Onion Johnnies","description":"For almost 150 years until the late 20th century French Onion Johnnies - or Ingan Johnnies, as they were usually known north of the border - were a familiar group of seasonal immigrant workers in cities and towns throughout Scotland and indeed Britain. At the beginning of the 21st century only one, so far as is known, is still at work in Scotland. He is Yves Rolland, based in Leith, and he and the only other eight known surviving Johnnies (or seven and one Onion \"Jenny\", Madame Anna Gourlet) who worked in Scotland at one time or another between the 1920s and the 1970s present in these pages their spoken recollections of their working lives. As the only seasonal immigrant onion sellers in Britain, Onion Johnnies all came from a relatively small area of Brittany. The origins of the Johnnies and their \"oignons roses\" or pink onions can be found in the decade or more after the Napoleonic Wars had ended in 1815 at Waterloo.   Eugene Guyader refers to the first Johnnies setting out from Santec in 1828 to cross the Channel to sell onions in Britain, while Yves Rolland recalls his \"patron\" or boss at Leith telling him the traffic arose out of the rescue from drowning at Roscoff of British royal personages and the consequent grant of permission to local people to sell their onions on the other side of the Channel. The Johnnies' annual migration across the Channel to England, Wales and Scotland, took place regularly toward the end of July and in early August. With their strings and bunches festooned over the handlebars and rear wheels of their bicycles, the Onion Johnnies were instantly recognizable wherever they went in Scotland. This book provides, in their own words, a unique record of their lives and work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49543135265041,"sku":"GOR002743515","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51715683516689,"sku":"GOR002227533","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1862322201.jpg?v=1750725979"},{"product_id":"onion-johnnies-book-ian-macdougall-9781839830310","title":"Onion Johnnies","description":"For almost 150 years until the late twentieth century, French Onion Johnnies (or ‘Ingan Johnnies’, as they were usually known in Scotland) were a familiar group of seasonal workers in towns and cities throughout Britain. The book also takes us behind the library counter with tales of how the insecure false teeth of one staff member at Glasgow's Mitchell Library regularly plummeted four floors down the shaft of the book hoist and had to be retrieved by a colleague; of how Mills \u0026amp; Boon readers, to whom authors and titles meant little, inscribed their personal marks on books they had read to avoid borrowing the same ones again; of how a future leader of a national trade union expanded his mind and honed his political views in a small branch library in Fife; of how the mobile library in Midlothian, like the Pony Express, always got through regardless of the weather.As background to their working lives, the interviewees describe their familycircumstances, housing, schooling, pastimes, reading and wartime experiences. There was no other work to be had in Dalkeith at the time; as Helen Boyd recalls, \"We had tae dae it. Mackay, as agent and general manager of the Lothian Coal Company, ran a veritable reign of terror from the 1890s until his retirement and death on the eve of World War II. His domination was not confined to the miners at their work, for most of the Lothian Coal Company's miners and their families lived in the Company's tied houses at Newtongrange and Rosewell, and the threat of eviction was ever present. Seated at his famous Green Table, Mackay wielded a power so extensive and enduring that even today there is a saying among some of the older residents at Newtongrange: \"Mungo's no' deid yet\". This book is part of the \"Flashbacks\" oral history series. What it meant to live and work under the regime of Mungo Mackay is told in first-hand recollections by the miners themselves. They include farm, forestry and sawmill workers, shopworkers and domestic servants, the main local landowner, wartime Land Girls and a wartime evacuee. In their own words they describe daily life and work; social, political, religious and cultural activities; changes in farming practices; the huge impact of two World Wars; the closure of village shops as car ownership and supermarkets spread; and the rising cost of village housing, pushing younger villagers into the towns. Popular local practices, such as poaching and the annual Ball Day are discussed, as are issues such as hiring fairs and flittings, large families, schooling, overcrowding, poverty, unemployment, food and drink.   There are also colourful tales of local characters such as Bobby the Banesetter, 'Dr' Blythe (a carter, dustman and sportsman who was often locked in a shed by his wife until he sobered up), tramps Bet the Boar, Sailor Jack and Big Bella Robertson (a 'holy terror and strong as any man') who lifted the village policeman and laid him down on the road 'on the bane o' his back' when he came to arrest her for being drunk. The book gives a vivid portrayal of country and village life in Scotland during a century of great change.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50669869039889,"sku":"GOR008447049","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190656695X.jpg?v=1750834919"},{"product_id":"voices-of-leith-dockers-book-ian-macdougall-9781841830322","title":"Voices of Leith Dockers","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50701393920273,"sku":"GOR002166221","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51441136992529,"sku":"GOR014282907","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1841830321.jpg?v=1751027445"},{"product_id":"all-men-are-brethren-book-ian-macdougall-9781904607724","title":"All Men Are Brethren","description":"This is the first book to attempt a comprehensive and detailed history of the thousands of French and other prisoners of war (POW) in Scotland during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1803-14 POW in Scotland endured experiences similar to but also different from prisoners of more recent times. \"All Men are Brethren\" describes conditions at each Scots depot (as the POW camps were then termed) at locations such as Edinburgh Castle, Perth and Penicuik.The book describes in vivid detail how the prisoners passed their years of captivity - gambling, forging banknotes, making impressive items from straw, paper, wood, hair and mutton bones from their rations, playing musical instruments, attending education classes, fencing with sticks, keeping pets and even playing cricket. From the culmination of twenty years of research and writing, this book is based on material from the National Archives in Kew and Edinburgh, on diaries and memoirs by prisoners, and on reports in contemporary Scots and English newspapers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50734495826193,"sku":"GOR011117556","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51360382157073,"sku":"GOR007235601","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904607721.jpg?v=1751379839"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-ian-macdougall.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
