Terrorism appears to take law to its limit, whilst the demands of counter-terrorism hold the cause of justice in contempt. At this point the case for engaging alternative intellectual approaches and resources is compelling. Ian Ward argues that through a closer appreciation of the ethical and aesthetical dimensions of terror, as well as the historical, political and cultural, we can better comprehend modern expressions and experiences of terrorism. For this reason, alongside juristic responses to modern expressions of terrorism, Law, Text, Terror examines a variety of supplementary literary texts as well as alternative intellectual approaches; from the drama of Euripides and Shakespeare, to the rhetoric and poetry of Burke and Shelley, the literary feminisms of Lessing and Rame, and the narrative existentialism of Conrad, Coetzee, Dostoevsky and DeLillo.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49550749303057,"sku":"GOR010299657","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52680347451665,"sku":"NLS9780521740210","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521740215.jpg?v=1786120387"},{"product_id":"critical-introduction-to-european-law-book-ian-ward-9780406958105","title":"A Critical Introduction to European Law","description":"The new edition of this thought-provoking book discusses the history and institutional framework of the European Union without becoming mired in the minutiae of 'black letter' law. Written by one of the leading academics specialising in European law and legal theory, it provides an accessible introduction for students to current critical academic commentary on European law. The structure of the book has been revised, with the law of the market and discussion of EU social policy being brought together under one section heading. There is also increased discussion of the institutions of the EU and a specific section on Human Rights. The final section of this new edition will locate the author in the current critical commentary on the EU and also endeavour to make these sections much more accessible to the student reader. Written in an accessible style intended for students as well as a broader audience, it takes the reader beyond the narrower confines of legal doctrines and cases, and invites them to consider the myriad contexts within which English law has been shaped: the politics, the economics, the art, the poetry. Reaching from the Reformation through to the age of Reform, it tells stories, the ‘histories’, of English law. Histories of the constitution and government, of crime and contracts, tort and trespass, property and equity. Of the people who made that law, those who wrote it, and those who suffered it. For it is in the end a human story, of justice and injustice, of success and failure, good luck and bad. At the heart of the dispute were differing opinions regarding the nature of kingship and the reach of prerogative in reformation England. Appreciating the longer context, in the summer of 1616 King James appealed for a reformation of law and constitution to complement the reformation of his Church. Later historians would discern in these debates the seeding of a century of revolution, followed by another four centuries of reform. This book ventures the further thought that the arguments which echoed around Westminster Hall in the first years of the seventeenth century have lost little of their resonance half a millennium on. Breaks with Rome are little easier to 'get done', the margins of executive governance little easier to draw.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51627746459921,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51627746722065,"sku":"NGR9781509957798","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52770186526993,"sku":"NLS9781509957798","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1509957790.jpg?v=1786182391"},{"product_id":"law-and-literature-book-ian-ward-9780521474740","title":"Law and Literature","description":"The emergence of an interdisciplinary study of law and literature is one of the most exciting theoretical developments taking place in North America and Britain. It argues that to write any history is to tell a story. In doing so, it appreciates the place not just of context and contingency in the history of law but also of humanity. Law is a human creation, for which reason it accommodates both reason and romance. Absent sensibility, it makes no sense. This book accordingly tells four stories about law. A first revisits a familiar institution, the English monarchy. A second reads history through the lens of a particular author, Daniel Defoe. A third writes a history of a few hundred yards of Bristol, eighteenth-century England’s premier slave-port. A fourth investigates a peculiar, and hideous, fantasy. They are perhaps best defined as the models that have influenced motoring history and those whose legend has endured, and the British motor industry has produced many of the greatest of these models. This gloriously illustrated book looks at what made these cars iconic - how they came to be and how they made their mark. The first proper sports car was the Prince Henry Vauxhall of 1910, while it was Sir Herbert Austin whose little Seven made motoring affordable for millions in the 1920s. Jaguar's XK120 of 1948 brought astonishing speed and elegance at low cost, and Sir Alec Issigonis famously turned the motoring world on its head when he designed the legendary Mini. These and many other classic cars and their manufacturers are profiled in this book. The story of each model, from its design and development all the way through to its production is discussed alongside the fortunes of its manufacturing company. Specification panels for a representative model details key features including engine type, power and top speed. With the aid of specially commissioned photographs, this unique selection provides a snapshot of Britain's motoring story. For anyone fascinated by the world's most wonderful cars, this book is a must. Celebrating 75 years of British motor car design and production, from Vauxhall's Prince Henry 9 in 1911 to the TVR S of 1986, the book features famous marques from the major British manufacturers including Aston Martin, Bentley, Bristol, Jaguar, MG, Morgan, Rolls-Royce, Triumph, and many more. Technical panels give detailed specifications for each marque, including engine type, power, stroke, capacity, transmission, wheelbase and top speed. Gloriously illustrated with more than 500 specially commissioned photographs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52599790567697,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52599790797073,"sku":"NGR9780754836315","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780754836315.jpg?v=1763116648"},{"product_id":"writing-the-victorian-constitution-book-ian-ward-9783030072315","title":"Writing the Victorian Constitution","description":"This book charts the writing of the English constitution through the work of four of the most influential jurists in the history of English constitutional thought-Edmund Burke, Thomas Babington Macaulay, Walter Bagehot and Albert Venn Dicey. It is suggested that there are both internal and external pressures that are driving the reformation of our constitutional order. There are internal pressures of decay, even corruption, and popular apathy, and there are external pressures brought to bear by the geopolitical challenges of the new world order and the new Europe. The present 'project' of constitutional reform inaugurated by the present government is supposed to reflect these pressures. This book challenges this assumption, arguing that a far more radical re-constitution is required, involving: deeper institutional reforms (the most pressing being the abrogation of monarchy, and the established Church); geopolitical reforms to recast the devolutionary settlement and redefine English regionalism; and perhaps most importantly, conceptual reform, reform that will embrace the need to rebalance the constitution and to promote greater accountability and democracy. It is intended that the book will provide a stimulating text for both academics and students; advancing a series of original ideas on a subject of considerable contemporary interest. Along the way it discusses most of the major topics, institutions and debates which are ordinarily addressed in public law courses, and equivalents in non-law disciplines.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53730581381393,"sku":"NLS9781841134314","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781841134314.jpg?v=1786040439"},{"product_id":"sex-crime-and-literature-in-victorian-england-book-ian-ward-9781849462945","title":"Sex, Crime and Literature in Victorian England","description":"The Victorians worried about many things, prominent among their worries being the 'condition' of England and the 'question' of its women. Sex, Crime and Literature in Victorian England revisits these particular anxieties, concentrating more closely upon four 'crimes' which generated especial concern amongst contemporaries: adultery, bigamy, infanticide and prostitution. Each engaged questions of sexuality and its regulation, legal, moral and cultural, for which reason each attracted the considerable interest not just of lawyers and parliamentarians, but also novelists and poets and perhaps most importantly those who, in ever-larger numbers, liked to pass their leisure hours reading about sex and crime. Alongside statutes such as the 1857 Matrimonial Causes Act and the 1864 Contagious Diseases Act, Sex, Crime and Literature in Victorian England contemplates those texts which shaped Victorian attitudes towards England's 'condition' and the 'question' of its women: the novels of Dickens, Thackeray and Eliot, the works of sensationalists such as Ellen Wood and Mary Braddon, and the poetry of Gabriel and Christina Rossetti. Sex, Crime and Literature in Victorian England is a richly contextual commentary on a critical period in the evolution of modern legal and cultural attitudes to the relation of crime, sexuality and the family.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53730626273553,"sku":"NLS9781849462945","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781849462945.jpg?v=1786528339"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-ian-ward.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
