Generally brutal and authoritarian, the best-known manifestation of this phenomenon is the Islamic State (IS). While the IS has been decimated in the last few years, most analysts agree that the problem of jihadist violence is far from over, and that the IS may very well re-configure itself in a not so distant future. Moreover, beyond Iraq and Syria, the security threat posed by violent jihadism remains an acute issue. Yet no one has hitherto systematically explored the potential for civil resistance against jihadist armed groups.  In Confronting the Caliphate, Isak Svensson and co-authors Daniel Finnbogason, Dino Krause, Luís Martínez Lorenzo, and Nanar Hawach focus on a core set of questions: What can civilians, who oppose the jihadists' attempt to rule them, do to manifest their dissent? To what extent are civilians engaging in acts of resistance against jihadist rebel rule and what does such resistance look like? Does it matter, and can it in any way influence the trajectories of jihadist proto-states? New military and political realities in Iraq and Syria have opened up the possibility to generate new knowledge in areas where the IS has been pushed back. The authors draw from a novel survey on civil resistance against the IS in Mosul after the IS lost control of the city. This survey--the first of its kind--concentrates on the extent and character of resistance behavior against the IS. The authors also utilize contemporary Arab-language social media blogs and news websites in order to document protests against jihadists in Syria, and they also draw on interviews with activists and civilian in Syria and Lebanon who have lived under rule of jihadist groups. Importantly, they show that the international character of jihadist groups are often perceived as alien to local customs, thereby triggering resistance.   Given the events of the recent past and the potential resurgence of such groups, this book is a valuable intervention that not only shows us how jihadists rule, but provides the best explanation yet of how ordinary people resist jihadist totalitarianism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49745965187345,"sku":"NGR9780197605608","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52636840722705,"sku":"NIN9780197605608","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0197605605.jpg?v=1751323359"},{"product_id":"go-between-book-isak-svensson-9781601270627","title":"The Go-Between","description":"Success in international mediation hinges on the skill, style, and methods of the mediator. This volume explores international mediation through the lens of Ambassador Jan Eliasson, an international go-between with a remarkable track record.Authors Svensson and Wallensteen contend that international mediators styles vary in four dimensions scope, method, mode, and focus and that the mandate mediators receive strongly determines the style they adopt. The authors draw lessons for the peacemaking process from their examination of how Eliasson entered, prepared, pursued, and finally ended his mediation efforts. Svensson and Wallensteen evaluate Eliasson s role in six cases: two missions on the Iran-Iraq conflict; two cases of humanitarian diplomacy, in Burma\/Myanmar and in Sudan; and two cases of internal armed conflicts, in Nagorno-Karabakh and in Darfur. Analyzing the role of the mediator in each of these instances offers insight into the constraints mediators face and outcomes they may achieve in other scenarios. The authors conclude with ten implications for mediation research and practice.As a special feature of this volume, the authors incorporate excerpts from extensive interviews and diary entries from Jan Eliasson on his mediation experiences.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50395467186449,"sku":"CIN1601270623G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53294407876881,"sku":"CIN1601270623VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1601270623.jpg?v=1751375432"},{"product_id":"ending-holy-wars-book-isak-svensson-9780369318091","title":"Ending Holy Wars","description":"Peace and Security offers both a broad overview of what is being done in conflict - affected countries to advance women's participation in peace processes, peacebuilding and decision - making. The authors examine the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on 'Women, Peace and Security' and present evidence - based case studies from Timor - Leste, Fiji and Sri Lanka to suggest key actions needed. Five fundamental aspects flow through the book: a specifically feminist methodology, a priority on gender equality and women's empowerment and broad notions of human security and peacebuilding. While identifying obstacles, the emphasis is on articulating best practices in numerous contexts and outlining key actions to be taken by development agencies, women's NGOs and policy - makers. Peace and Security explores ways to protect women and girls from violence, ensure gender perspectives in peacekeeping, and increasing participation of women in decision - making.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51231446958353,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51231448826129,"sku":"NIN9780369318091","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0369318099.jpg?v=1750813584"},{"product_id":"peacemaking-mandate-book-isak-svensson-9781009413886","title":"The Peacemaking Mandate","description":"Who are the mediators in international mediation? This book reviews the current state of knowledge regarding multilateral negotiations and seeks to provide key research insights on the conditions under which nuclear negotiations can become more effective. Drawing on the work of a group of leading international scholars on nuclear negotiations specifically, or multilateral negotiations more broadly, each chapter explores a central dimension that is necessary for effective nuclear diplomacy. The volume engages with some of the key factors and explanations behind more effective nuclear diplomacy and discusses some of the most pressing empirical challenges.    Reviewing what we currently know about how negotiation attempts addressing global challenges can be made more effective, this book will be of interest for students of international relations, nuclear diplomacy, nuclear disarmament, arms control, nonproliferation. It will also be of interest for wider circles of people engaged in policy-making relating to these issues.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52825930432785,"sku":"NIN9783032035646","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52934400278801,"sku":"NLS9783032035646","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032035646.jpg?v=1764928651"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-isak-svensson.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
