Hillis Miller explains why the split occurred and offers, for the first time, an eloquent analysis of the goals and methods of cultural studies. Miller's Illustration is an intellectual adventure that transgresses the boundaries of critical theory to reveal the ideological forces at work. The result, art critic Norman Bryson concludes, is an extraordinary performance. In a positive, constructive way, Miller describes cultural studies as, primarily, a means of contextualizing works of art. Relating the assumptions behind this approach to recent social, political, and technological changes, he shows how cultural studies is itself subject to its context and thus perhaps misguided insofar as it portrays art objects as mere illustration. In particular, Miller considers new forms of electronic research in the humanities which, with their vast, homogenizing effect on data, can compel a critic to reconfigure information--in fact, to create the context that he or she means simply to identify. To illustrate this phenomenon, Miller investigates one topic of importance for cultural studies: the relation of verbal and visual forms in multimedia works. Drawing examples from Twain, Gorey, Mallarme, James, Ruskin, Heidegger, Dickens, and Turner, he shows how neither word nor image takes priority in such collaborations; nor is either a mere representation of a pre-existing reality. The transformations wrought by cultural artifacts on their contexts, Miller contends, must be identified through detailed and vigilant rhetorical readings if the force of a work of art is tobe passed on into the current cultural situation. And for the new form these readings take, the reader-critic must in turn assume responsibility.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49575104479505,"sku":"GOR010214427","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0674443586.jpg?v=1751136492"},{"product_id":"mikhail-gorbachev-and-the-end-of-soviet-power-book-jh-miller-9780333591949","title":"Mikhail Gorbachev and the End of Soviet Power","description":"In 1985 the Soviet Union was a recognized superpower and its political system, whilst looking clumsy to the outside world, also looked tenacious. Less than seven years later the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was banned, the notorious KGB broken up and the Soviet Union itself dissolved into 15 independent states. This book explores the final years of the Soviet system and Gorbachev's career as party leader and president (up to December 1991) and assesses the place of perestroika in Russian history. The book also analyzes features of Gorbachev that puzzled the West, in particular his relationships to communism, revolution, democracy and gradualism, to the Soviet middle classes and intelligentsia, to the Communist Party, and to the national diversity of the former Soviet empire.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49607136280849,"sku":"GOR010155887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333591941.jpg?v=1751356842"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-j-h-miller.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
