The blue-violet light of Saint Elmo's fire, caused by a molecular tearing apart of plasma in the air, is brightest at the end of pointed objects such as ship's masts and lightning rods where the surface is at its highest curvature. The stories are concentrated in the area of high curvature where phenomena are more intense. The smell of rain is in the wind, mixed with the pungent odor of ozone. You are in for a stormy ride through a landscape cast in violet light.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52952001741073,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52952001872145,"sku":"NIN9780578831831","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780578831831.jpg?v=1766070628"},{"product_id":"hole-in-the-bone-book-j-thomas-brown-9780578400273","title":"The Hole in the Bone","description":"An archaeologist is hired by the Regional Museum of Xinjiang (East Turkestan) to discover the Lost City of Shamadu. We lived up and down the U.S. East Coast, in Sweden, and in England. The plot of this patremoir is woven around the places we lived. A common thread in the story is his driving, at times humorous, and sometimes terrifying. Dad had a mind like a steel trap, but his braininess also got him into trouble.\nHis mind was always crunching away on something else. He was not mentally in the same place where his body was. Dad said on several occasions he wished he had become a college professor and not an engineer. He enjoyed getting in front of an audience and lecturing with near perfect recall of dates and facts and gesticulated dramatically when speaking. This is okay if you are giving a lecture, but not if you are doing over sixty down the highway and take your hands off the wheel. He had driving tickets. Lots.\nSo I wrote about his driving adventures and his love of life. In the end, it was difficult for him to let go. Driving With Poppi is a novelette that benefitted tremendously from the developmental editing expertise of Nicole Miller who has lived and studied abroad and is an editor for Harvard faculty publications. She had these kind words to say:\n\"I enjoyed this piece, beginning to end. As a reader, I was swept into the waves, gentle and rough, of a life, and the life of a family. At several points, I couldn't help relating to scenes that felt familiar to me, as if lived through in my own experience. That is a rare kind of connection. I cherish the discovery, and hope to read more of your work. In this essay, you have captured 20th century universals in the portrait of a father, a patriarch, and the life of an American (tech) salesman.\"","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53518141980945,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53518142341393,"sku":"NIN9780578806563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780578806563.jpg?v=1778335395"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-j-thomas-brown.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
