His comprehensive fourteen volume history is a work of unparalleled achievement in its field. Fortescue combines thorough source material research with insightful academic observation of the conduct of the campaigns he describes and of the decisions, errors and strategic and tactical options of their principal protagonists. The Leonaur editors have carefully selected passages from Fortescue's magnum opus to create a series of books, each focusing on a specific war or campaign.
The conflicts of the 18th century created our modern world. It was a time of invention, discovery and global expansion. Nations with established power sought to hold and develop their power, just as nations aspiring to power fought to grasp it. Bourbon France and Britain vied to bring as much trade and land as possible under their respective influences, whilst Prussia, under threat from east and west, struggled to assert itself. The continent had been in foment since The War of Spanish Succession. Another question of succession arose in Austria and opportunities for exploitation of instability and threats to treaties of alliance and established trade meant war was inevitable. During The War of Austrian Succession the British Army fought battles which emblazon regimental colours to this day-notably at Fontenoy and Dettingen. Before a decade of uneasy peace had elapsed, war broke out again. The Seven Years War-possibly the first 'world war'-demonstrated the superior power of British arms and dealt blows to France from which it never recovered. The British Army earned more battle honours in Europe, including Minden, Emsdorf and Warburg and Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, revealed himself (according to Fortescue) to be the finest commander of British troops in the field on the continent between the periods of Marlborough and Wellington. This unique Leonaur volume includes maps and illustrations not present in the original text.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Volume 6 of the 6 volume history of the Peninsular War

Fortescue is rightly renowned for his multi-volume magnum opus, 'The History of the British Army', which, since it was written in the early decades of the twentieth century, feature the struggles with Napoleonic France, as a substantial part of the whole. The blame for war substantially resided with the British government, which believed, against all the lessons of history (including their own), that the continued loyalty and obedience of peoples could be demanded and expected irrespective of any fundamental injustices to which those people might be subjected. A number of the colonies took issue with that presumption and hostilities-after strenuous attempts on the part of the aggrieved to avoid them-broke out. Independence was declared, and an under resourced British Army, far from home, burdened by political intransigence, indifference and logistic inefficiency, was called upon to rectify matters. The Leonaur editors have carefully selected passages from Fortescue's magnum opus to create a series of books, each focusing on a specific war or campaign.
As the British Empire's influence spread throughout India, it found itself in conflict with native states of martial peoples who frequently proved themselves capable of effectively bringing the British to battle. By the early 19th century a war had been fought against the Gurkhas in Nepal in the north-east, and within a decade another threat arose beyond the frontier in the south-east. The Burmese Empire of the period had a long history of successful warfare to its credit so encroachment on territories in India by the Burmese was inevitably taken seriously and resulted in a military expedition to Burma to settle the matter in 1824. British and Indian forces found that they were opposed by an army with competent military commanders, which quickly built effective defensive positions whenever it halted. Bamboo stockades were surprising resilient to artillery fire, and inhospitable jungles hampered the invader and favoured the Burmese who knew the terrain intimately. Tropical diseases were also rampant and killed huge numbers of British and Indian troops more effectively than combat. In open battle, and supported by the Royal Navy, the British prevailed. However, British recognition of their inability to sustain a sufficient presence in Burma to guarantee good order, and the acknowledgement of the difficulties of campaigning in such an inhospitable environment, led to an inconclusive outcome. This inevitably led to, future troubles and the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Burmese war in 1852. Much of the blame for that debacle has fallen-quite unjustly according to Fortescue-upon the shoulders of Elphinstone, the ill-fated commander. Although The First Afghan War was a notorious blunder of cataclysmic proportions, Fortescue's perspective on it will be a revelation to many readers. The war began as a conflict instigated by the British, over an unnecessary issue that was never in contention, against a leader of his people who was broadly amenable to British objectives. The conduct of the war, fought over the most hostile terrain populated by a fierce, resourceful enemy, disintegrated through mismanagement, incompetence, double dealing and treachery, into a humiliating defeat for British arms and prestige in India. The Leonaur editors have carefully selected passages from Fortescue's magnum opus to create a series of books, each focusing on a specific war or campaign. Louis XIV-the Sun King-had long fostered grand designs for the conquest and domination of continental Europe. The French invaded Flanders bringing the Dutch and their allies the British to the field of conflict. Among the officers of the British stood John Churchill, destined to be one of the outstanding military commanders of the modern age. This book follows the British at war from the time of William of Orange's accession to the throne and the closing decades of the 17th century into the early 18th century. The War of Spanish Succession included battles which have become iconic honours of the British Army including, of course, Marlborough's outstanding victory at Blenheim. After years of protracted and bitter fighting Louis' ambitions were foiled and the 'lion surmounted the sun.' For the first time Fortescue's incisive history of Marlborough and his wars is available in a single volume and no library of the period will be complete without his direct analysis and critically observed view of the events and personalities of this epic period in European military history.
The Leonaur editors have carefully selected passages from Fortescue's magnum opus to create a series of books, each focusing on a specific war or campaign. The British Empire's subjugation of the Indian sub-continent had progressed inexorably from the founding of the first English trading settlement in the early 17th century. Vast regions of the country fell under the government or influence of the Honourable East India Company until the presidencies of Bengal, Bombay and Madras, their power upheld by their own native armies supported by regiments of the Crown, had all but mastered India. Few Indian states remained independent by the middle years of the 19th century. Inevitably, among their populations were strong, fiercely martial peoples including the Amirs of Scinde, the Marathas of Gwalior and, greatest among them, the Sikhs of the Punjab. The Sikh Khalsa was the best organised and armed native army which had ever opposed the British and in two momentous conflicts-the First and Second Sikh Wars-came very close to victory. This books charts the hard fought battles that brought the British geographic control of the sub-continent from Ceylon in the far south to the passes of the Hindu Kush. The catalyst-and salutary lesson-of the 'Great Mutiny' shortly followed, though that catastrophe led to the creation of 'the Raj' which consolidated India into one governable state and paved the way towards independence.
After years of protracted and bitter fighting Louis' ambitions were foiled and the 'lion surmounted the sun.' The Leonaur editors have carefully selected passages from Fortescue's magnum opus to create a series of books, each focusing on a specific war or campaign. In the 17th century Britain faced a succession of 'cruel necessities' according to those who judged such things. Irreconcilable differences between parliament and King Charles I brought a tragic civil war that led ultimately to regicide. The House of Stuart brought nothing but disaster, dissension and unpopularity to its realm-irrespective of who was on the throne-and the ensuing rebellion resulted in the execution of the illegitimate son of Charles II, the Duke of Monmouth.
