Though these regions initially shared the histories and populations we associate with the idea of a \"Deep South\"-all had economies based on slave plantation labor in 1860-their histories diverged sharply during the three generations after Reconstruction. With research gathered from oral histories, census reports, and a wide variety of other sources, Harris traces these regional changes in cumulative stories of individuals across the social spectrum. Deep Souths presents a comparative and ground-level view of history that challenges the idea that the lower South was either uniform or static in the era of segregation. By the end of the New Deal era, changes in these regions had prepared the way for the civil rights movement and the end of segregation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363476738321,"sku":"CIN080187310XA","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363481358609,"sku":"CIN080187310XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51463021461777,"sku":"GOR010131097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53396972732689,"sku":"CIN080187310XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/080187310X.jpg?v=1750914612"},{"product_id":"plain-folk-and-gentry-in-a-slave-society-white-liberty-and-black-slavery-in-augu-book-j-william-harris-9780819561633","title":"Plain Folk and Gentry in a Slave Society: White Liberty and Black Slavery in Augusta's Hinterlands","description":"In this exciting study of the communities on both sides of the Savannah River in Georgia and South Carolina, J. William Harris explores two great ironies of American history--the South's commitment to a liberty supported by slavery and its attempt to maintain the status quo with a war that undermined southern society. Relying on strong research in quantifiable data as well as manuscript records, Harris examines why white southerners--most of whom did not own slaves--united in a long, bloody war to preserve the institution. He argues that slaveowners relied on an ideology of liberty, a potential for social mobility, and a web of personal relationships between classes to contain white class divisions and ensure control over the black population. The strains of war, Harris shows, dissolved these bonds of community and made Confederate victory impossible, forever changing southern society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363862155537,"sku":"CIN0819561630G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0819561630.jpg?v=1751043795"},{"product_id":"from-bedlam-to-bethlehem-book-j-william-harris-9781573120166","title":"From Bedlam to Bethlehem","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50391151575313,"sku":"CIN1573120162G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1573120162.jpg?v=1750830622"},{"product_id":"hanging-of-thomas-jeremiah-book-j-william-harris-9780300152142","title":"The Hanging of Thomas Jeremiah","description":"In 1775, Thomas Jeremiah was one of fewer than 500 'Free Negros' in South Carolina and, with an estimated worth of GBP 1000 (about $200,000), possibly the richest person of African descent in British North America. A slave owner himself, Jeremiah was falsely accused by whites - who resented his success as a Charleston harbour pilot - of sowing insurrection among slaves at the behest of the British. Chief among the accusers was Henry Laurens, Charleston's leading patriot, a slave owner and former slave trader, who would later become the president of the Continental Congress. Lord William Campbell, royal governor of the colony, who passionately believed the accusation was unjust, tried to save Jeremiah's life but failed. Though a free man, Jeremiah was tried in a slave court and sentenced to death. In August, 1775, he was hanged and his body burned. J. William Harris tells Jeremiah's story in full for the first time, illuminating the contradiction between a nation that would be born in a struggle for freedom and yet deny it, often violently, to others.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50916871799057,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50916872814865,"sku":"CIN0300152140G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52857892077841,"sku":"GOR006267698","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53497673613585,"sku":"CIN0300152140VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300152140.jpg?v=1751228246"},{"product_id":"plain-folk-and-gentry-in-a-slave-society-book-j-william-harris-9780807122655","title":"Plain Folk and Gentry in a Slave Society","description":"In this exciting study of the communities on both sides of the Savannah River in Georgia and South Carolina, J.
