Neusner explains why the Sermon on the Mount would not have convinced him to follow Jesus and why, by the criterion of the Torah of Moses, he would have continued to follow the teachings of Moses. He explores the reasons Christians believe in Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of Heaven, while Jews continue to believe in the Torah of Moses and a kingdom of priests and holy people on earth. This revised and expanded edition, with a foreword by Donald Akenson, creates a thoughtful and accessible context for discussion of the most fundamental question of why Christians and Jews believe what they believe.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49511672021265,"sku":"GOR005105058","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49678124810513,"sku":"CIN0773520465G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49728541557009,"sku":"NGR9780773520462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49778788139281,"sku":"CIN0773520465A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984281932049,"sku":"NIN9780773520462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51840446693649,"sku":"GOR011104852","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52171222286609,"sku":"CIN0773520465VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0773520465.jpg?v=1763476116"},{"product_id":"introduction-to-judaism-book-jacob-neusner-9780664253486","title":"An Introduction to Judaism","description":"Judaism is an ancient religion, practiced through most of recorded history and having profound influence on both Christianity and Islam. There is no scholar more highly regarded as an authority on Rabbinic literature and Judaism than Jacob Neusner. And there is no educator better suited to explaining it in clear and concise terms, laying out the list of texts, their background and development, their content, the resources with which to delve more deeply into their meaning, and their importance for Judaism, biblical studies, and Christianity.  This Essential Guide discusses all the texts in Rabbinic literature, including the Mishnah, Tosefta, Talmuds, and Midrash. From the 1950s to the present day, Jacob Neusner has served as one of the public intellectuals of the English-speaking community of Judaism. The essays, beginning a half-century ago and continuing to the present day, claim a hearing for two reasons. First, the issues persist for a new generation to confront. Second, there is the story of a generation now passing that remains to be told. The essays collected here form a contribution to the narrative. These concern both Judaism the religion viewed in its own terms, and also Judaism the amalgam of religious and ethnic components viewed in the political setting of the Jewish People, with special reference to the English-speaking component of that People. These enduring issues are captured by the words 'Holocaust' and 'State of Israel'. The impact of the Holocaust has defined the condition and consciousness of world Jewry from the Second World War onward. For not a few it takes the place of Judaism. So too, the State of Israel and Zionism define paramount parts of that amalgam, and for many these two substitute for Judaism. The Holocaust, Zionism, and the State of Israel represent claims upon the consciousness and conscience of the diaspora that none would contemplate dismissing. Rabbinic literature in its formative age, from the Mishnah through the Bavli, ca. 100–600 c.e., is comprised by documents that relate to one another in three ways. First, they are autonomous and self-contained; second, they are connected with one another; and third, they are continuous with one another. Some point to the connections, in the form of parallel versions of sayings or stories, as evidence against the theory that the documents possess integrity.  Volume One addresses the contrary position as represented by the writings of three generations, the Goldberg-Schaefer-Becker group, of the German academic school of Rabbinic studies. That school holds that for antiquity there is nothing we may call \"Judaism,\" a religious system realized in its canonical writings. Indeed, there are no timely documents, only diverse MSS variants of indeterminate location in time and space. This position rests on the myth of the autonomous tradition. Everyone knows that the same composition and even sizable composite may occur in more than one document of the canon of Rabbinic Judaism in its formative age, the first six centuries c.e. A given saying or story may find its way into two or three documents, exhibiting variations as it moves along. The implications of these parallels, which constitute traditions autonomous of any distinctive, determinate documentary setting, bear examination. In Volume One of Neusner's canonical compilations, these parallels make no point at all. They are random, trivial, and prove nothing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49910421487889,"sku":"CIN1586841068G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53213701079313,"sku":"NLS9781586841065","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1586841068.jpg?v=1750798842"},{"product_id":"invitation-to-the-talmud-book-jacob-neusner-9780060660994","title":"Invitation to the Talmud","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49949683351825,"sku":"GOR013821459","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52102176506129,"sku":"CIN0060660996G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0060660996.jpg?v=1751163419"},{"product_id":"midrash-in-context-book-jacob-neusner-9780800607081","title":"Midrash in Context","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49982593761553,"sku":"GOR006113461","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51777908703505,"sku":"GOR013519083","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53148715352337,"sku":"GOR006500048","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0800607082.jpg?v=1751297420"},{"product_id":"book-of-jewish-wisdom-book-jacob-neusner-9780826408907","title":"The Book of Jewish Wisdom","description":"Gathers selections from the Torah arranged by more than one  hundred subjects, from arrogance and blessings to virtue and wealth.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49996162531601,"sku":"CIN0826408907G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50040769741073,"sku":"CIN0826408907VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0826408907.jpg?v=1751233564"},{"product_id":"invitation-to-the-talmud-book-jacob-neusner-9780060661120","title":"Invitation to the Talmud","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50000015393041,"sku":"CIN0060661127A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51694277165329,"sku":"CIN0060661127G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52816213344529,"sku":"CIN0060661127VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0060661127.jpg?v=1751388367"},{"product_id":"judaism-in-the-new-testament-book-bruce-chilton-9780415118446","title":"Judaism in the New Testament","description":"Judaism in the New Testament explains how the writings of the early church emerged from communities which defined themselves in Judaic terms even as they professed faith in Christ. These two extremely distinguished scholars introduce readers to the plurality of Judaisms of the period. And how do you identify a book with neither a beginning nor end, lacking table of contents and title? The answer is you just begin and let the author of the book lead you by paying attention to the information that the author does give, to the signals that the writer sets out. As Neusner goes on to explain, the Mishnah portrays the world in a special way, in a kind of code that makes it a difficult work for the modern reader to understand. Without knowing how to decode the Mishnah, we may read its works without receiving its message. \tNeusner, one of the world’s foremost Mishnaic scholars, demonstrated that the Mishnah’s own internal logic and structure form a solid foundation on which to build an understanding of this vitally important Jewish work. Using examples of how the Mishnah’s language, logic, and discourse associate and categorize behaviors, events, and objects, Neusner opens the Mishnah to readers who would not otherwise be able to grasp its most fundamental concepts. \tSince the Mishnah forms the basis of both the Babylonian and the Palestinian Talmuds (which are, in Neusner’s elegant terms, “the core curriculum of Judaism as a living religion”), study of the Mishnah is essential to an understanding of Judaism. Drawing on his own new translation of the Mishnah and displaying the enthusiastic dedication that has sparked a whole new body of Mishnaic research, Neusner allows readers with no previous background to join Jews who have studied, analyzed, and delighted in the wisdom of Mishnah for centuries. \tIn addition to giving us a thorough exploration of the Mishnah’s language, contents, organization, and inner logic, Neusner also provides us with a broad understanding of how it communicated its own world view – its vision of both the concrete an spiritual worlds. The Mishnah: An Introduction gives us a tour of this sacred Jewish text, shedding light on its many facets – from its view of life to its conception of God and His relation to our world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50037991670033,"sku":"CIN0876688768G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52120075862289,"sku":"NLS9780876688762","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0876688768.jpg?v=1755772129"},{"product_id":"tuffy-s-heroes-revised-edition-book-joe-tuffy-tofuri-9780983174523","title":"Tuffy's Heroes Revised Edition","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50038252110097,"sku":"CIN0983174520G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0983174520.jpg?v=1750820091"},{"product_id":"midrashan-introduction-the-library-of-classical-judaism-book-jacob-neusner-9780876688144","title":"Midrashan Introduction (The Library of classical Judaism)","description":"To find more information about Rowman and Littlefield titles, please visit www.rowmanlittlefield.com.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50038270296337,"sku":"CIN0876688148G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51502925152529,"sku":"NIN9780876688144","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454163710225,"sku":"NLS9780876688144","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0876688148.jpg?v=1755498108"},{"product_id":"history-and-torah-essays-on-jewish-learning-rare-book-jacob-neusner-1680798480dge","title":"History And Torah - Essays On Jewish Learning","description":"1965. Neusner explains why the Sermon on the Mount would not have convinced him to follow Jesus and why, by the criterion of the Torah of Moses, he would have continued to follow the teachings of Moses. He explores the reasons Christians believe in Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of Heaven, while Jews continue to believe in the Torah of Moses and a kingdom of priests and holy people on earth. In this masterful presentation, the reader is introduced to the classics of Jewish Bible interpretation, with special attention to the way in which the ribbis of Talmudic times read the Pentateuch, the Book of Ruth, and Song of Songs. The seven Midrash compilations are introduced with a lucid account of their main points, accompanied by selections that give the reader a direct encounter, in English, with the Bible as Judaism understands it. The word midrash, based on the Hebrew root DaRaSH (“search”), means “interpretation” or “exegesis.” Midrash also more formally refers to the compilations of such interpretations of Scripture. As Dr. Jacob Neusner explains, these  compilations “reached closure and conclusion in the formative stage of Judaism, that is, the first seven centuries of the Common Era, the time in which the Mishnah (ca. 200), Talmud of the Land of Israel (ca. 400), and Talmud of Babylonia (ca. 600) were written.” Midrash is not so much about Scripture as it is a subordinate part of Scripture: “They did not write about Scripture,” Dr. Neusner says. “They wrote with Scripture … much as painters paint with a palette of colors.” The Midrash: An Introduction is the second volume in Dr. Jacob Neusner’s series of introductory volumes on classical rabbinic literature. As with the first volume – The Mishnah: An Introduction – this book offers the layperson a concise description of the religious literature and, drawing on Dr. Neusner’s own translations of the texts, walks readers through the selections, providing them with firsthand experience with the document itself. As Dr. Neusner says in his preface to The Midrash: An Introduction, “In these pages I mean to make it possible for readers to know one such compilation from the other and so to begin studying their own.”","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50278037881105,"sku":"GOR013909978","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51601627513105,"sku":"CIN1568213573VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51695258763537,"sku":"CIN1568213573G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52495522922769,"sku":"NIN9781568213576","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52535024910609,"sku":"NLS9781568213576","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B08F3L26WF.jpg?v=1750719705"},{"product_id":"midrash-reader-book-jacob-neusner-9780800624330","title":"Midrash Reader","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50291382780177,"sku":"CIN0800624335G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0800624335.jpg?v=1751075509"},{"product_id":"invitation-to-the-talmud-book-jacob-neusner-9780060660970","title":"Invitation to the Talmud","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50342672761105,"sku":"CIN006066097XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B000HMDMTC.jpg?v=1750908065"},{"product_id":"religion-science-and-magic-book-jacob-neusner-9780195056037","title":"Religion, Science and Magic","description":"This is a collection of contributed papers arising from a conference held at Brown University in 1987. Every culture makes the distinction between \"true religion\" and magic. One action and its result are termed \"miraculous\", while another is rejected as the work of the devil. The 10 essays in this book examine the history of this distinction in Christianity and Judaism. Their underlying premise is that by understanding how a social group sorts out approved from disapproved practices and beliefs we gain insight into that group's mode of self-definition. One significant recurring theme is that \"magic\" is the insider's term for the outsider's religion. Social, cultural and anthropological explanations are advanced for the prominence of the magical in certain periods. There are some broad theoretical essays as well as in-depth studies of magic in particular literatures and periods. Among the contributors are Jacob Neusner, Hans Penner, Howard Kee, Tzvi Abusch, Susan R. Garrett and Moshe Idel. Topics considered include Babylonian witchcraft, Jesus the Magician, magic in Hasidism and the Kabbalah, and magic in Anglo-Saxon England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346123002129,"sku":"CIN0195056035G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195056035.jpg?v=1751132461"},{"product_id":"talmud-of-the-land-of-israel-book-jacob-neusner-9780226576671","title":"The Talmud of the Land of Israel","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346875683089,"sku":"CIN0226576671G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0226576671.jpg?v=1750779649"},{"product_id":"introduction-to-rabbinic-literature-book-jacob-neusner-9780300140149","title":"Introduction to Rabbinic Literature","description":"The achievement of a lifetime from one of today's most eminent Judaic scholars--a landmark commentary on the history of rabbinical teachings in the Christian era: the Mishnah, the Tosefta, the Talmuds, and more.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50348074369297,"sku":"CIN0300140142G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300140142.jpg?v=1750812922"},{"product_id":"torah-through-the-ages-book-jacob-neusner-9780334024569","title":"Torah Through the Ages","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50348703088913,"sku":"CIN0334024560G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52103036567825,"sku":"CIN0334024560VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0334024560.jpg?v=1751071473"},{"product_id":"comparing-religions-through-law-book-jacob-neusner-9780415194877","title":"Comparing Religions Through Law","description":"Comparing Religions Through Law offers a ground- breaking study which compares these two religions through shared dominant structures. According to Jacob Neusner, the key to understanding the Mishnah is to read it as philosophy, in accord with the generally accepted understanding of philosophy in its time and place. In this text, Neusner studies a large sample of evidence, and identifies the philosophical side of the Mishnah's system, method and message alike. The philosophical tradition in which the Mishnah takes its place, Neusner explains, utilizes the method of Aristotle to demonstrate the proposition important to Middle Platonism. While given in the form of a law code, the Mishnah sets forth a Judaic system of the social order that employs a method that in its context was distinctly philosophical in order to reach a conclusion that in its time was particularly philosophical. Demonstrated through the systematic and orderly hierarchical classification of the things of nature, the framers of the Mishnah illustrate the ultimate unity of all being emanating from the One on high. Arguing that the document's writers chose a legal form for a philosophical proposition, this book seeks to change a centuries-old way of reading the Mishnah. Judaism emerges as a sustained demonstration of the unity of all being under one God.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363090239761,"sku":"CIN0801861608VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0801861608.jpg?v=1751011468"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-jacob-neusner.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
