Da aber dieses Gebiet naturgemaB den Morphologen uberlassen blieb, die der rein chemischen und physikalischen Behandlung biologischer Pro- bleme oft fremd und zum Teil geradezu ablehnend gegenuber- stehen, so wurde kein Versuch gemacht, den ProzeB der Ent- wicklungserregung im Sinne der Chemie und Physik zu ent- wirren; und man behalf sich mit morphologischen Worterkla- rungen und Definitionen. So behauptete O. Hertwig, daB das Wesen der Befruchtung in der Vereinigung des Sperma- kerns mit dem Eikern bestehe; und diese Behauptung wird von ihm als eine Theorie der Befruchtung hingestellt, obwohl damit doch nicht die geringste Einsicht in die Natur der Krafte gegeben ist, welche das Ei zwingen, sich in einen Embryo zu entwickeln.
