One of America's most controversial generals, Douglas MacArthur's rise through the U.S. Army's ranks was meteoric. However, he did not lead large formations of men in combat until he assumed command of forces in the Philippines in 1941. When war commenced with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, MacArthur's performance on the battlefield was a failure: he underestimated the Japanese, and his poorly trained forces were outmaneuvered and outfought by a much smaller invading force. However, in what became a repeating hallmark of his career, he successfully portrayed his actions to much of the American people as brilliant and heroic regardless of victory or defeat. After fleeing to Australia, MacArthur famously announced, I will return, and followed through on a quest to retake Manila regardless of its impact on Allied global strategy or its cost in American, Australian, and Filipino blood. In his subsequent role as America's shogun in Tokyo, MacArthur was again surprised by an enemy he underestimated. The Korean War yielded his greatest victory, at Inchon, but also his greatest defeat, along the Yalu River. Unwilling to accept anything but complete victory, he openly defied President Truman: MacArthur fatally undermined chances for an early peace, planned to seed a great swath of enemy territory with radioactive cobalt, and attempted to widen a conflict which threatened to become a third world war. Raging against his subsequent firing, he only truly faded away after he was publicly criticized by a panoply of America's greatest WWII generals. Today, MacArthur still polarizes. Many biographies agree he was a great and patriotic leader marred by a few failures. Ellman argues the opposite: MacArthur was a lackluster battlefield commander who suffered stunning defeats while undermining the command structure of our military.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49849438142737,"sku":"CIN081177158XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50131064422673,"sku":"CIN081177158XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50972306866449,"sku":"GOR014153829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007941148945,"sku":"NIN9780811771580","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52661785264401,"sku":"NLS9780811771580","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/081177158X.jpg?v=1766142352"},{"product_id":"hot-stocks-book-james-ellman-9781538137468","title":"Hot Stocks","description":"The costs of global warming and its mitigation will have a major impact on equity market performance over the next two decades. As the climate changes, investors will need to understand which are the best-positioned market sectors and stocks as well as those to avoid. Hot Stocks provides a roadmap detailing how to invest in this new reality. It evaluates the many ways global warming will affect profit flows in the economy: Impacts of a warmer climate, rising ocean levels, more frequent extreme storm events, land desertification and ocean acidification. Potential for government taxation on greenhouse gas emissions. Accelerating switching to renewable power systems that are increasingly cost competitive with those powered by oil fossil fuels. Government bans on sales of cars powered by internal combustion engines and the electrification of the terrestrial vehicle fleet. Potential for hydrocarbon reserves and equipment becoming impaired or ‘stranded assets’. Rising demand for major infrastructure projects to protect valuable coastal real estate from inundation. Litigation aimed at forcing legacy polluters to pay mitigation costs.  \tThe book drills down on how these myriad changes will depress or support stocks in sectors such as the petroleum industry, automakers, renewable power providers, regional banking, property insurance, heavy equipment manufacturers, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and agricultural chemicals. The analysis then pivots away from a US-centric focus to identify those nations around the world whose economies are best positioned to successfully adjust to the impact of rising prevailing temperatures, as well as those likely to suffer the most from the trend. \tHot Stocks introduces readers to investing in ways that that will likely succeed as the world warms, climates change, populations move, and businesses change. Accessibly written and well-researched, this work is for the novice and the seasoned investor alike.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50715338637585,"sku":"CIN1538137461VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51423181078801,"sku":"CIN1538137461G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51553757561105,"sku":"NIN9781538137468","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52671964217617,"sku":"NLS9781538137468","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1538137461.jpg?v=1759398943"},{"product_id":"hitler-s-great-gamble-book-james-ellman-9780811775472","title":"Hitler's Great Gamble","description":"\u003cp\u003eOn June 22, 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, one of the turning points of World War II. Unlike some others, the United States has shown a remarkable ability to bounce back from defeat: to learn from the loss, recover, and turn it into victory. In this book James Ellman, who has established a reputation for his reconsiderations of military history, takes a close look at nine such pivot points on the ground, in the air, and at sea, from the American Revolution through the Korean War: Long Island (1776) to Saratoga (1777) Charleston (1780) to Cowpens and Guilford Court House (1781) Invasion of Canada (1812) to Battle of Lake Erie (1813) First Bull Run (1861) to Antietam (1862) Pearl Harbor (1941) to Midway (1942) Luzon (1942) to Buna-Gona (1943) Kasserine Pass (1943) to El Guettar (1943) Schweinfurt\/Ploesti (1943) to “Big Week” (1944) Chongchon (1950) to Operation Ripper (1951) In brisk narratives, Ellman describes each battle, explaining how it was fought and lost, and then shifts gears to detail how leaders—military as well as civilian—such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, and George Patton assessed the factors that led to defeat, made changes to training, tactics, and strategy, and entered the next battle wiser and better prepared. Ellman finally recounts the subsequent battle, focusing on how it was shaped by what came before and how the victory was gained. As this book makes clear, the history of the United States at war is, to a surprising degree, the story of tenacity in the wake of defeat, of flexibility and adaptability on the path to victory. This is essential reading for understanding how battles are lost and won.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51598341767441,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51598342160657,"sku":"NGR9780811776776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52519236370705,"sku":"NIN9780811776776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52659424100625,"sku":"NLS9780811776776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53632522060049,"sku":"CIN0811776778G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0811776778.jpg?v=1757416740"},{"product_id":"hitler-s-great-gamble-book-james-ellman-9780811738491","title":"Hitler's Great Gamble","description":"On June 22, 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, one of the turning points of World War I.
