On his third and final great voyage, Cook surveyed the northwest American coast in the hopes of finding the legendary Northwest Passage. While dreams of such a passage proved illusory, Cook’s journey produced some of the finest charts, collections, and anthropological observations of his career, helped establish British relations with Russia, and opened the door to the hugely influential maritime fur trade. Accompanying an exhibition of the same name, Arctic Ambitions: Captain Cook and the Northwest Passage sheds new light on Cook’s northern exploration. A collection of essays from an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, the book uses artifacts, charts, and records of the encounters between Native peoples and explorers to tell the story of this remarkable voyage and its historical context. In addition to discussing Cook’s voyage itself, the book also provides new insights into Cook’s legacy and his influence on subsequent expeditions in the Pacific Northwest. Finally, the collection uses Cook’s voyage as a springboard to consider the promise and challenge of the “new north” today, demonstrating that it remains, as in Cook’s time, a unique meeting place of powerful political, cultural, economic, and environmental forces.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49581798523153,"sku":"GOR009711455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50271634948369,"sku":"CIN0295993995VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51430077890833,"sku":"GOR010611632","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53396252590353,"sku":"GOR014902449","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0295993995.jpg?v=1767176212"},{"product_id":"captain-cook-in-alaska-the-north-pacific-book-james-k-barnett-9781578334087","title":"Captain Cook in Alaska \u0026 the North Pacific","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49584961913105,"sku":"GOR013540995","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50392204738833,"sku":"CIN157833408XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51542889169169,"sku":"CIN157833408XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/157833408X.jpg?v=1751444122"},{"product_id":"captain-cook-s-final-voyage-book-james-k-barnett-9780874223576","title":"Captain Cook's Final Voyage","description":"Maritime historian and researcher James K. Barnett transcribed two extraordinary, little-known journals from Captain James Cook's third exploratory voyage. They offer remarkable eyewitness accounts at the time of initial European contact, the first reasonably accurate maps of North America's west coast, the earliest comprehensive report from the Bering Sea ice pack, and the dramatic story of Cook's death at Kealakekua Bay. Astonishing for accounts of landings along Hawai'i, Vancouver Island, and Alaska, both chronicles languished in Australian archives for over a century. Barnett adds context and commentary to complete the story.Commissioned by the British Admiralty, Cook set sail in July 1776 to confirm the outline of North America's Pacific coastline and search for the elusive Northwest Passage. The expedition's sailing ships, the Resolution and the Discovery, traveled to the South Seas, then chanced upon the Hawaiian Islands before reaching the Oregon coastline and the Arctic. Cook chose to winter in the Hawaiian archipelago, where he died in a skirmish. His crews made a second attempt to find the coveted route, then returned to England after more than four years at sea. James Burney was first lieutenant on the Discovery. Active in shore parties and chart preparation, he saw Cook's death from the ship's deck. One of the few accounts from the consort vessel, his writing provides new details and important, thoughtful impressions of North and South Pacific people and places. Working under the notorious William Bligh, Henry Roberts was Master's Mate on the Resolution, performing essential hydrographic and cartographic tasks. He was a few feet away when Cook was killed. His well-illustrated logbook includes coordinates, tables of routes, and records of weather at sea, but also lively accounts of shore excursions. Illustrations include maps and drawings, as well as images by the expedition's official artist, John Webber.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49760514212113,"sku":"CIN0874223571G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0874223571.jpg?v=1756707837"},{"product_id":"captain-george-vancouver-in-alaska-and-the-north-pacific-book-james-k-barnett-9781578336739","title":"Captain George Vancouver in Alaska and the North Pacific","description":"Two of the Northwest Coast's largest cities and its most prominent island are named after the British explorer, George Vancouver, who is largely unknown despite his unprecedented five-year voyage during 1791-95, probably the longest voyage in European history. Sailing in the wake of his mentor, Captain James Cook, Vancouver investigated much of the North Pacific, confirming once and for all that the rumored Northwest Passage did not exist.\r His extraordinary expedition was the first to map Puget Sound and named nearly four hundred geographic features from Alaska's Cook Inlet to coastal Oregon. He named Point Campbell, Point MacKenzie and Point Woronzof in Anchorage, as well as Knight and LaTouche Islands, Passage Canal and Wells Passage in Prince William Sound. In Southeast Alaska he specified Lynn Canal, Admiralty and Douglas Islands, Berners Bay and Revillagigedo Island.\r In the Pacific Northwest he named Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens, Mt.
