Now, in Going Local, her lively and hilarious case of characters from Blue Deer, Montana, is back - featuring Jules Clement, the conscience and unlikely protector of the local populace. The novel begins as Blue Deer inhabitants are gearing up for the annual Fourth of July rodeo, with out-of-towners descending upon the town 'in a kind of berserk westward ho.' As Jules helps the hapless bar owners and other local merchants gear up for the onslaught, a shocking murder is discovered - that of a well-known environmental lawyer, who, while camping out with his younger lover, was run over by a truck and dumped into a lake, still wrapped in his tent. As Jules begins to investigate the murder, he uncovers a suspicious land development deal involving the dead lawyer and many others, including Hugh, a suave British director who's planning a movie that threatens to bring all of Blue Deer to a complete stop; Slyvia, the lawyer's ex, who's having an affair with Huge; Everett, a local boy who left town and made good; and Diane, a sexy blonde to whose dubious charms Jules succumbs: 'She's like a mob car - you get in, and all the locks go down.' As if the impending movie shoot isn't bad enough, the annual rodeo threatens to drive everyone in town batty. Tempers flare as out-of-towners try to be cowboys, as true locals attempt ridiculous heroics, and multiple murders ignite the town in the midst of amorous goings-on. Jules is as charming as ever, and readers who enjoyed the hijinks in Jamie Harrison's first novel will love Going Local.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50467084828945,"sku":"NGR9781640092969","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51043285631249,"sku":"NIN9781640092969","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51333896798481,"sku":"CIN164009296XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52816636313873,"sku":"CIN164009296XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/164009296X.jpg?v=1751434307"},{"product_id":"unfortunate-prairie-occurrence-book-jamie-harrison-9781640092983","title":"An Unfortunate Prairie Occurrence","description":"The first two novels in the Jules Clement Mysteries series, The Edge of the Crazies and Going Local, established Jamie Harrison as a preeminent young American writer whose intelligent mysteries rank with the sharpest, most original of new fiction. Fans and critics alike have fallen hard for Jules Clement, the unlikely sheriff of this small town bordering Yellowstone Park, who'd rather be off fishing than giving out tickets. Now it's mid-October in Blue Deer, and Jules is up to his crooked grin in trouble. A camper's discovery of old bones threatens to rip open secrets that have been long and deliberately buried in the hearts and minds of Blue Deer's oldest citizens. Jules begins a casual investigation that mushrooms into a nightmare of long-simmering enmities, love affairs, arson, and murder. Jules must query the local judge, his obnoxious daughter and power-hungry grandson, and even his own family. Served up with the intrigue is Jamie Harrison's eye for local humor and for finely drawn characters: there are Alice, the sharp-tongued director of the ladies' historical society, and Peter, her recalcitrant attorney husband. There's the enigmatic Edie, with whom Jules continues an on-again, off-again affair; and the beauteous Caroline, a new deputy who both intimidates and fascinates Jules. The sexual tension makes the intrigue even more suspenseful, and events culminate in a remarkably surprising climax. Fans of Jamie Harrison's earlier Jules Clement mysteries will love An Unfortunate Prairie Occurrence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50467086336273,"sku":"NGR9781640092983","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50662833357073,"sku":"CIN1640092986G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51042027012369,"sku":"NIN9781640092983","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1640092986.jpg?v=1750896387"},{"product_id":"blue-deer-thaw-book-jamie-harrison-9781640093003","title":"Blue Deer Thaw","description":"Blue Deer, Montana, is a nice place to visit - and a beautiful place to die... The small town of Blue Deer, Montana, is most famous for its breathtaking landscape and numbingly cold winters. But unless something changes, soon the small town will be known as the murder capital of the American West. Bodies have begun to pop up in the oddest places - a head is found poking out of a snowbank, a naked body floats by in the river, and a woman freezes to death just steps from her own front door. Reluctant Sheriff Jules Clement doesn't mind the arctic winter, but he'd rather be doing anything other than hunting for clues to the multiple murders. And clues are surprisingly difficult to come by in a town as cozy as Blue Deer, where everyone knows way too much about everyone else. More difficult yet, the investigation means he must work closely with Deputy Caroline Fair, whose charms tend to interfere with his concentration. In 1987, the painter and author and fly fisherman Russell Chatham, renowned for his stunning landscape paintings and his appetite for life, decided to take control of his own career by creating a publishing house in Livingston, Montana.  As one does, at least if they are Russell Chatham. “Control” was probably the wrong concept—for the next five years, Clark City Press was the chaotic home of beautifully produced works by an eclectic, talented collection of writers and artists, many of them given a painting in lieu of a publishing advance. What began as an effort to publish Chatham’s own work and that of his friends (a large and varied group) in elegant trade paperbacks morphed into something grander and more wayward.   Chatham could talk almost anyone into anything, and before the press imploded, all sorts of people said yes: Barry Gifford signed on for A Good Man to Know, a fictionalized memoir about his gangster father, Jim Harrison traded paintings for The Theory \u0026amp; Practice of Rivers and Just Before Dark, and Rick Bass wrote about the first wolves to resettle the continental United States in The Ninemile Wolves. Clark City Press published Thomas McGuane on fishing and memory, Guy de la Valdene on hunting woodcock, Richard Hugo’s only mystery, James Crumley’s short stories, and Peter Stackpole’s Life photos from the golden age of Hollywood.  In A River Dream, Clark City’s former editor, novelist Jamie Harrison, has collected some of the best of the press’s prose, art, and poetry, in a glorious celebration of a small and lost world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51631758311697,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51631758573841,"sku":"NGR9781567927993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52488245346577,"sku":"NIN9781567927993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52821172388113,"sku":"NLS9781567927993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1567927998.jpg?v=1751418548"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-jamie-harrison.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
