It is based on Jean's personal recollections of life in Corgarff, in the north-east of Scotland.  The press dubbed Corgarff as the 'village in the sky'.  Surrounded by the finest mountain scenery in Britain, its roots go back to antiquity.  The rugged peaceful scenery of the surrounding land is captured and the wildlife, birds, flowers, insects and animal life found there are described by Jean in beautiful detail.  Jean moves there with her young son in 1954 after her divorce the previous year. She lives in a cottage on the Allargue Estate and several of the chapters deal with the problems and privations of rural living.  Jean's new cottage was in a rather dilapidated state and she experiences particular hardship in her early attempts at renovation.  The story describes Jean's efforts to turn it into a home for herself and her son and their day-to-day life of a small village.  It is a charming and very human story.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49551922954513,"sku":"GOR002493390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51361334198545,"sku":"GOR014239320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1898218978.jpg?v=1751439314"},{"product_id":"quality-of-mercy-book-jean-cantlie-stewart-9780049200661","title":"The Quality of Mercy","description":"Biography of Sir James Cantlie (and his wife), pioneering doctor in the fields of first aid and tropical diseases, founder of the Hong Kong Medical School and rescuer of Sun Yat Sen, founder of modern China. She read Byron at a very early age, influenced by her elder brother.  Consequently, poetry became a lifelong passion for Jean.  One of her favourite authors was James Elroy Flecker, whose life was sadly cut short in 1915 when he died as a result of tuberculosis. His father had been ordained in the Church of England but Flecker explored the tenets of Islam which informed his later work.  As a result of Jean’s passion for the poetry of James Elroy Flecker, she compiled this delightful anthology with a detailed introduction. As Jean writes in her introduction, his poetry is “alive with colour, light, sound and music…to Flecker, poetry was a combination of acute perception and intellectual and emotional activity and, in order to develop these creative gifts, the poet needed an enthusiasm for the world in every detail – a world that was always ‘passionately interesting’ and filled with human kindness.”","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53705909109009,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53705909174545,"sku":"GOR015009962","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781999326913.jpg?v=1782357377"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-jean-cantlie-stewart.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
