Her pieces have been shown nationally and internationally and are included in a number of museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and Museum of Arts & Design (MAD) in New York. She is regarded as an important role model for other artists and craftspeople. Her jewellery style is influenced by Bauhaus and modernism, very simple and pure, both geometric and minimalist; although given her early aspirations to become a sculptor, it is not be surprising that she thinks of her jewelry as "sculpture in motion". Her pieces have been sold through museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and contemporary designers such as Keegs in Seattle. Cooke has designed jewelry for Kirk Stieff and for Geoffrey Beene's shows in New York and Milan. Fred Lazarus, former director of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where Cooke trained and taught for many years, has said of Cooke's work, 'There is an enduring timelessness about her work, and today, as she did 50 years ago, she continues to create work that is extraordinary in its clean, spare architectural line and stunning simplicity.' The volume features 160 pieces by Cooke, a fully-illustrated checklist, illustrated essay, "Reflections" by leading patrons and collectors of Cooke's jewellery, illustrated time-line, a selected bibliography, and exhibition history & list of collections containing pieces by Betty Cooke. New printing methods made it possible to distribute and post vivid full-color prints, spurring both artists and advertisers to take advantage of these public canvases. During its golden age in Paris, the poster was acclaimed for enlivening city streets, even as it was decried for its raucous colors, overt commodification, sexualized female figures, and oversized imagery. Collectors raced to snap up these ephemeral art pieces, sparking a frenzied demand dubbed affichomania, complete with its own experts and specialized publications containing small-scale prints for the home.L'Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters is a lavishly illustrated collection of these posters focusing on the work of five masters: Jules Cheret, the acknowledged founder of the field, Eugane Grasset, Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Alphonse Mucha, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. All are drawn from the collection of Richard H. Driehaus. With rising auction prices and the popularity of modern reprints, it is clear that affichomania is here to stay.
The firm of Tiffany & Co. has long been regarded as America's premier maker and retailer of fine luxury goods. This is especially true in the case of jewelry, an area in which the company emerged as an arbiter of taste and style by the mid-19th century. Charles Lewis Tiffany, one of the founders of the firm, was astutely aware of the desire of newly emerged elites for high-style jewels that would rival those owned by European aristocrats. A savy entrepreneur, Tiffany would eventually purchase part of the French Crown jewels for his American clients, selling them along with outstanding diamonds, precious gem-set jewelry, and Swiss-made watches. All would bear the company's mark and by the end of the 19th century, the brand was firmly established. While Tiffany & Co. lavishly met the luxury needs of America's well-to-do, they also passionately developed an American style, promoting American materials and motifs. Their displays at the International Expositions met with great success, further increasing their reputation in the world-wide market. They were also quick to adapt technological advances, including the raised diamond mount ("Tiffany setting"), new diamond-cutting techniques, and a system of hallmarking. Charles Lewis Tiffany's successors in the 20th century continued to create extraordinary adornments designed by outstanding artists, such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, Jean Schlumberger, Angela Cummings, Elsa Peretti, and Paloma Picasso. This book, thorough a series of original essays, pays tribute to the firm's enduring ingenuity.
The first monograph on American silversmith Earl Krentzin, who created small scale theatrical settings in silver with a wry sense of humour and an appreciation for the absurdity of life.
New England, especially Boston, was a center of the silversmith's art and craft in early America. In this volume, eleven distinguished scholars from museums and universities examine the styles, forms, and functions of silver from the time of John Hull and Robert Sanderson in the mid-seventeenth century through the career of Paul Revere in the federal period. Among the diverse topics considered are the etiquette connected with the use of silver tobacco, snuff, and patch boxes and the social significance of Boston's rare silver chocolate pots. An analysis of the narrative hunting scenes and other imagery on Boston rococo silver reveals much about early patterns of courtship and social interaction. A close study of John Singleton Copley's portrait of Paul Revere and Revere's Sons of Liberty bowl provides fresh insights into these icons of Americana, while a statistical analysis of Revere's patrons sheds new light on the carrer of this famous craftsman. Two essays discuss the profound significance of silver objects within New England's ecclesiastical history, and another documents the use of silver at Harvard College in its early days. A biography of Samuel Bartlett, a Concord silversmith, and a survey of silver on the early Maine frontier suggest the importance of regional studies, writ both small and large. These essays, based on presentations made at a conference cosponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, are published here in revised and expanded form. As a whole, they provide for an understanding of silver objects as part of New England's material world and as reflections of the attitudes and values of their makers and users.
