However, that countryside may have looked both more and less familiar than we imagine. Take todays startling yellow fields of rapeseed, seemingly more suited to the landscape of Van Gogh than Constable. They were, in fact, thoroughly familiar to fieldworkers in seventeenth-century England. At the same time, some features that would have gone unremarked in the past now seem like oddities. In the fifteenth century, rabbit warrens were specially guarded to rear rabbits as a luxury food for rich mens tables; whilst houses had moats not only to defend them but to provide a source of fresh fish. In the 1500s we find Catherine of Aragon introducing the concept of a fresh salad to the court of Henry VIII; and in the 1600s, artichoke gardens became a fashion of the gentry in their hope of producing more male heirs. The common tomato, suspected of being poisonous in 1837, was transformed into a household vegetable by the end of the nineteenth century, thanks to cheaper glass-making methods and the resulting increase in glasshouses.   In addition to these images of past lives, Joan Thirsk reveals how the forces which drive our current interest in alternative forms of agriculture a glut of meat and cereal crops, changing dietary habits, the needs of medicine have striking parallels with earlier periods in our history. She warns us that todays decisions should not be made in a historical vacuum: we can find solutions to our current problems in the experience of people in the past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49534757667089,"sku":"GOR010992832","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49598273519889,"sku":"GOR004780452","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50162226659601,"sku":"GOR012577088","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51304602829073,"sku":"NIN9780198208136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52414612078865,"sku":"NLS9780198208136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198208138.jpg?v=1751227779"},{"product_id":"english-rural-landscape-book-joan-thirsk-9780198662198","title":"The English Rural Landscape","description":"From pre-history to the present day our landscape has been transformed by dramatic human disturbance, triggered by the rise and fall of populations and their need to be fed, housed, and employed. These changes have built up layers of evidence which offer historians exciting insights into land use through the centuries and how rural communities of the past lived their lives. In this ground-breaking study - published in hardback as The English Rural Landscape and now available in paperback - Joan Thirsk and her team of distinguished contributors, many of whom live in the places they describe, invite us to explore the historical richness of the English landscape. Each chapter synthesizes the latest thinking and provides fresh perspectives on its subject. It is the first book since W. G. Hoskins' definitive study The Making of the English Landscape, published nearly 50 years ago, to do so. The first ten chapters describe the characteristic features of the main landscape types, including fenland, downland, woodland, marshland, and moorland. However geographically scattered areas of a particular landscape type are, they have often been moulded by successive generations in ways that have produced strong physical similarities. The second part of the book is made up of five cameo features, each exploring an individual place in detail: the people and the distinctive histories that shaped them. These include the Land Settlement experimental village of Fen Drayton, set up during the Great Depression in the 1930s, and surveys of the very different settlements of Hook Norton in North Oxfordshire and Staintondale in North Yorkshire. Rural England: A History of the Landscape shows us how much of the rural past is still visible if we choose to dig for it. It illustrates how we might go about exploring it for ourselves. It is the definitive work on the history of the English landscape for all would-be landscape and local history detectives, professional and amateur alike.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49578389045521,"sku":"GOR003517260","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53618135826705,"sku":"GOR005587497","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198606192.jpg?v=1751005287"},{"product_id":"seventeenth-century-economic-documents-book-joan-thirsk-9780198282662","title":"Seventeenth Century Economic Documents","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49624260149521,"sku":"GOR003038146","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49652995293457,"sku":"GOR007114176","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50949353767185,"sku":"GOR004696783","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198282664.jpg?v=1751132078"},{"product_id":"rural-economy-of-england-book-joan-thirsk-9780907628293","title":"The Rural Economy of England","description":"No one has done more to emphasise the significance of the land in early modern England that Joan Thirsk, whose writings are both an important contribution to its history and point the way for future research. What did ordinary people eat and drink five hundred years ago? How much did they talk about food? Did their eating habits change much? Our knowledge is mostly superficial on such commonplace routines, but this book digs deep and finds surprising answers to these questions. We learn that food fads and fashions resembled those of our own day. Commercial, scientific and intellectual movements were closely entwined with changing attitudes and dealings about food. In short, food holds a mirror to a lively world of cultural change stretching from the Renaissance to the industrial Revolution. This development was largely fostered by the government, eager to reduce expensive imports and to lessen dependence on foreign wares. The new occupations employed great numbers of men, women and children and thus helped to absorb the growing population into the economy, fostering the growth of a consumer society. Political economists thereafter formulated a new view of the economy, emphasizing the role of labour in creating wealth.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50790141755665,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50790142607633,"sku":"GOR004906776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198283083.jpg?v=1750972887"},{"product_id":"agrarian-history-of-england-and-wales-2-part-set-volume-5-1640-1750-book-joan-thirsk-9781107401181","title":"The Agrarian History of England and Wales 2 Part Set: Volume 5, 1640-1750","description":"Volume V of The Agrarian History of England and Wales was first published in 1984. It was the first detailed study of agriculture and agricultural change in the period 1640 to 1750. It is the work of nineteen specialist scholars who have used original archives in local record offices throughout the kingdom, as well as central records. The volume examines the special economic and social circumstances of these years, and the changing price relationships in agricultural produce. It traces consequent changes in farm profits; the diversification of agriculture; the development of more regional specialisation and horticulture; the development of agricultural policy; the responses of landowners as estate managers and farmers; the elaboration of marketing facilities and of channels of communication for advertising new ways in farming. A richly illustrated account is given of building developments and an appendix contains annual and decennial price and wage increases.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51019638964497,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51019641454865,"sku":"NIN9781107401181","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1107401186.jpg?v=1751400386"},{"product_id":"agrarian-history-of-england-and-wales-volume-4-1500-1640-book-joan-thirsk-9780521200202","title":"The Agrarian History of England and Wales: Volume 4, 1500-1640","description":"This 1967 volume was the result of a project which originated a decade before its publication, when scholars from eleven British universities met under the presidency of the late R. This volume provides an insightful analysis of this transformation and looks at the impact new consumer industries had on the English economy and economic ideas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53177087852817,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53177087918353,"sku":"GOR014793500","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198282747.jpg?v=1772197792"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-joan-thirsk.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
