Part One examines the efforts of four thoughtful nineteenth-century moral reformers who expounded this strategy: Joseph Tuckerman, Robert M. Hartley, Charles Loring Brace, and Josephine Shaw Lowell. This section explains concretely what they did (and why they did it), taking note of the obstacles confronting their work and their successes and failures in overcoming them.Part Two explains the twentieth-century critique of moral reform. Drawing from the work of figures such as Jane Addams, Walter Rauschenbusch, and (more recently) Frances Fox Piven, it examines the rise of a belief that the virtues promoted by the moral reformers were individualistic and 'bourgeois', hence inapplicable to the lives of the poor. Part Three assesses African Americans' historical commitment to the moral reformers' virtues, apparent in the writings of figures as divergent as Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Dubois, and Malcolm X.Moving to the present, the book examines Americans' increasing respect for the utility and importance of the supposedly 'bourgeois' virtues, as manifested in both survey data and in improvements in various statistical indicators. The renewed commitment to a self-help strategy for fighting poverty is evident in the widespread interest in the work of faith-based charities and in recent shifts in public policy. The book concludes by assessing the reasons to be hopeful, but also to be sceptical, of the success of that strategy. \"Fighting Poverty with Virtue\" will interest a wide variety of historians and social scientists, as well as lay readers eager to understand the plight of the impoverished residents of America's cities, both yesterday and today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50167735222545,"sku":"CIN0253337712VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0253337712.jpg?v=1751100897"},{"product_id":"robert-brown-and-mungo-park-book-joel-schwartz-9783030748616","title":"Robert Brown and Mungo Park","description":"Explorer-naturalists Robert Brown and Mungo Park played a pivotal role in the development of natural history and exploration in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This work is a fresh examination of the lives and careers of Brown and Park and their impact on natural history and exploration. Brown and Park were part of a group of intrepid naturalists who brought back some of the flora and fauna they encountered, drawings of what they observed, and most importantly, their ideas. The educated public back home was able to gain an understanding of the diversity in nature. This eventually led to the development of new ways of regarding the natural world and the eventual development of a coherent theory of organic evolution.   This book considers these naturalists, Brown, Park, and their contemporaries, from the perspective of the Scottish Enlightenment. Brown’s investigations in natural history created a fertile environment for breakthroughs in taxonomy, cytology, and eventually evolution. Brown’s pioneering work in plant taxonomy allowed biologists to look at the animal and plant kingdoms differently. Park’s adventures stimulated significant discoveries in exploration. Brown and Park’s adventures formed a bridge to such journeys as Charles Darwin’s voyage on H.M.S. Beagle, which led to a revolution in biology and full explication of the theory of evolution.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064113758481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064116543761,"sku":"NIN9783030748616","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52409669419281,"sku":"NLS9783030748616","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030748618.jpg?v=1751382555"},{"product_id":"upchuck-summer-book-joel-schwartz-9780440492641","title":"Upchuck Summer","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52095307120913,"sku":"CIN0440492645G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52471161717009,"sku":"CIN0440492645A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52935433290001,"sku":"CIN0440492645VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780440492641.jpg?v=1757006840"},{"product_id":"extraordinary-pupfish-of-calaveras-county-book-joel-schwartz-9780595492602","title":"The Extraordinary Pupfish of Calaveras County","description":"When Jeremy McGinnis, a 15-year-old in the sleepy Gold Rush town of Murphys, discovers a retired teacher spasming with an asthma attack and out of medicine, it's a no-brainer to get him to the hospital.
