From the beginning of his career to his last works, he brought supernatural elements into his narratives to test his characters and thrill his readers. His 1932 novel The Gap in the Curtain was his last full-length work devoted to exploring a supernatural theme: if you were able to see one year into the future, what would you do with that foreknowledge? And what would it do to you? The novel tells the story of five country-house guests who are trained by the ailing Professor Moe, an Einsteinian mathematician who has devised a way of seeing into the future. These five guests gain one piece of knowledge from the experiment, and have to decide how to act on it. Five episodes ensue: o The story of the philanthropist who played the markets for too long o The story of the politician who changed sides too often o The story of the antiquarian book dealer in the clutches of a feminist capitalist o The story of the man who foresaw his own death o The story of the woman who would not let her lover die This novel is classic Buchan, ranging from epic to farcical to battling with natural forces and the horrors of feminism. It hasn't been in print for 15 years, and is shamefully undervalued. The Introduction is by Kate Macdonald, one of the leading Buchan experts. It has crossover appeal from the classic 1930s fiction to period supernatural short stories. The cover reuses the original 1932 artwork from the Hodder \u0026amp; Stoughton edition. The episodes vary from high drama to social comedy, and use Buchan's skill in writing political intrigue and adventure abroad. John Buchan wrote Prester John , his sixth novel, in 1910, seven years after he himself returned from South Africa. It was his first to reach a wide readership across the world, and it established him as the writer of fast-paced adventures for which he is famous. The episodes vary from high drama to social comedy, and use Buchan's skill in writing political intrigue and adventure abroad. This is a novel that showcases Buchan's talents as a storyteller, and is a thoroughly satisfying read. The Introduction is by Kate Macdonald, author of John Buchan. The Mystery Companion and many other works on Buchan's writing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49519202107665,"sku":"GOR012076771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49524761264401,"sku":"GOR012309504","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49759927370001,"sku":"NGR9781912766482","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51328185729297,"sku":"CIN1912766485VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912766485.jpg?v=1751451299"},{"product_id":"john-burnet-of-barns-book-john-buchan-9781846970733","title":"John Burnet of Barns","description":"The turbulent 'Killing Times' of the Covenanters is the backdrop to a desperate struggle between lifelong rivals. These twelve stories were written from 1913 to 1927, when he was at the peak of his powers. Buchan's most popular character Richard Hannay battles an ancient curse in South Africa in `The Green Wildebeest'. Edward Leithen tags along in an assassins' war in `Sing a Song of Sixpence'. The Runagates Club features First World War spy and code-cracking thrillers `The Loathly Opposite' and `Dr Lartius'; tales of supernatural possession in deepest Wales, comfortable Oxfordshire and the House of Commons, in `The Wind in the Portico', Fullcircle' and `\"Tendebant Manus\"'; and stories of survival in the far North and in Depression-era Canada with `Skule Skerry' and `Ship to Tarshish'. There is farce too, in `The Frying-Pan and the Fire' and `\"Divus\" Johnston', and the riotous journalistic romp of `The Last Crusade' is the last word on fake news, for all eras. What makes The Runagates Club special is that Buchan designed it as a showcase to bring together the best of his magazine fiction. He repurposed these stories with new beginnings, framing them as after-dinner stories told over the port in a late 1920s private gentleman's dining-club. The narrators are a ready-made cast of storytelling characters, and Buchan filled out their backgrounds to fit the patrician, clubland background. This is interwar story-telling at its very best, with a critical introduction by Kate Macdonald.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49520358588689,"sku":"GOR009053684","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736883765521,"sku":"NGR9781999828011","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":49994424221969,"sku":"CIN1999828011LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50397320478993,"sku":"CIN1999828011A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50411723424017,"sku":"GOR010423198","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51737865945361,"sku":"CIN1999828011G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1999828011.jpg?v=1751030189"},{"product_id":"island-of-sheep-book-john-buchan-9781846971563","title":"The Island of Sheep","description":"A long-forgotten promise made by Richard Hannay finds him honour-bound to resolve a violent vendetta in which the lives of a young father and his daughter are in danger from unscrupulous and desperate men. It is a stirring and challenging tale of seventeenth-century devilry, combatted in vain by David Sempill, the parish minister, who is hindered by the hypocrisy of his parishioners and his fellow-ministers' cant. In the background, meanwhile, the civil unrest of the Scottish Wars of the Covenant tears David's loyalties between his love of his calling and his admiration for the Marquis of Montrose, the leading opponent of the extreme Covenanters. Witch Wood also tells a love story that owes much to the ballads Buchan learned from his father and is infused with a subtle, other-worldly longing, nourished by the author's knowledge of Dante, Plato, and Virgil. The Dark Wood is not merely Scottish: it is the classical and medieval symbol for the subliminal powers which challenge reason in every age. This book is intended for general readers, Buchan fans, readers of Scottish fiction.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49525188165905,"sku":"GOR001376037","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49580553535761,"sku":"GOR002309532","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49631686689041,"sku":"GOR001289645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192829416.jpg?v=1751323738"},{"product_id":"adventures-of-dickson-mccunn-book-john-buchan-9780140236477","title":"The Adventures of Dickson McCunn","description":"An omnibus edition featuring the complete adventures of Dickson McCunn.
