The exploration elucidates the full range of moral development, from superficial perception to a deeper understanding and feeling through social perspective-taking. By comparing, contrasting, and going beyond the key theories of preeminent thinkers Lawrence Kohlberg, Martin Hoffman, and Jonathan Haidt, John C. Gibbs tackles vital questions: What exactly is morality and its development? Can the key theoretical perspectives be integrated? What accounts for prosocial behavior, and how can we understand and treat antisocial behavior? Does moral development, including moments of moral inspiration, reflect a deeper reality? This fourth edition of Moral Development and Reality is thoroughly updated, refined, and expanded. A major addition considers Paul Bloom's important challenge to Hoffman's theory. This book will have broad appeal across academic and applied disciplines in social and developmental psychology, education, the helping professions, and human development. Complete with case studies and chapter questions, it serves especially well as a text in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in social and developmental psychology, education, the helping professions, and human development.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558110699793,"sku":"GOR013584336","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999664378129,"sku":"NIN9780190878214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52462595277073,"sku":"NLS9780190878214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53370623721745,"sku":"CIN0190878215VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0190878215.jpg?v=1751036946"},{"product_id":"equip-implementation-guide-book-john-c-gibbs-9780878224609","title":"The EQUIP Implementation Guide","description":"This user-friendly guide is designed to enhance implementation of an EQUIP training programme. The approach includes training in moral judgment, anger management\/correction of thinking errors, and prosocial skills. Youth involved in the EQUIP training program participate in two types of group sessions - Equipment Meetings (in which the leader teaches specific skills) and Mutual Help Meetings (in which the leader coaches students as they use the skills they've learned to help each other). The EQUIP program received the 1998 Reclaiming Children and Youth Spotlight on Excellence Award. In addition to being widely used in the U.S., EQUIP has been adapted for use in Canada, the Netherlands, and several other countries. Program Evaluation In an evaluation of the program, 57 boys between the ages of 15 and 18 who were recently committed to a juvenile corrections facility were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) The experimental EQUIP treatment group, 2) the motivational control group, or 3) the simple control group. Results indicated that participants in the EQUIP group experienced significant decreases in self- and staff-reported institutional misconduct as well as gains in social skills, whereas participants in either control group did not. There were no differences between groups in regards to changes in moral judgment.Leeman, L.W., Gibbs, J.C., \u0026amp; Fuller, D. (1993). Evaluation of a multi-component group treatment program for juvenile delinquents. Aggressive Behavior, 19, 281-292.UpdatesSince its introduction in the early 1990s, the EQUIP Program has been adapted and implemented at various facilities and institutions in North America, Europe, and Australia. The institutions include juvenile correctional facilities, community-based adult correctional facilities, halfway houses, re-entry programs, and middle schools. The young persons served have ranged in age from preadolescence through adulthood. One example is the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Red Wing, which provides treatment, education, and transition services for chronic male juvenile offenders. After implementing and adapting EQUIP, Red Wing saw its recidivism rate drop by better than half (from 53% to 21%; see Gibbs, Potter, DiBiase and Devlin, in press).Book Reviews\"\"For the first time, 'what we know' and 'what we know works' have been distilled into a highly readable, scientifically proven intervention program for antisocial youth.\"\"—Laurie Rice, Journal for Juvenile Justice and Detention Services\"\"The EQUIP Program is a must read. . . Gibbs and colleagues provide the reader with a succinct but clear conceptual understanding of the causes of antisocial behavior, cognitive treatment strategies, and methods to empirically validate the effectiveness of interventions.\"\"—John Lemmon, Juvenile Justice Update\"\"The beauty of this book is its organization and practicality. . . The EQUIP Program is realistic and would be beneficial for teachers, principals, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and those interested in making a positive impact on youth.\"\"—Carol A. His EQUIP program, discussed in this book, is among the finest peer treatment programs available for antisocial youth. This book offers a far-reaching analysis of basic processes in moral development, and it should be read by anyone who is interested in the theory and practice of promoting positive behavior in even the most troubled young.\"                --William Damon, Director, Stanford Center on Adolescence, Stanford University \"Moral Development and Reality provides a most engaging journey through the terrain of moral and empathic development through the eyes of a seasoned guide. Gibbs′s extension and integration of his previous work offers a remarkably fresh, interesting, and provocative study, challenging traditional understandings of moral development.\"                                                                     -JOURNAL OF MORAL EDUCATION Moral Development and Reality: Beyond the Theories of Kohlberg and Hoffman explores the nature of moral development, social behavior, and human interconnectedness. By comparing, contrasting, and going beyond the works of pre-eminent theorists Lawrence Kohlberg and Martin Hoffman, author John C. Gibbs addresses fundamental questions: What is morality? Can we speak validly of moral development? Is the moral motivation of behavior primarily a matter of justice or of empathy? Does moral development, including moments of moral inspiration, reflect a deeper reality? Useful for promoting classroom debate and academic dialogue, this innovative book examines Fundamental themes of Kohlberg′s cognitive developmental approach The recent integration of Hoffman′s theory and research on empathy and moral development Moral self-relevance and other variables that account for prosocial behavior The understanding and treatment of antisocial behavior Issues of moral motivation, perception, and reality Moral Development and Reality elucidates the full range of moral development from superficial perception to a deeper understanding and feeling through social perspective-taking. Providing case studies and chapter questions, Gibbs creates a unique framework for understanding Kohlberg′s and Hoffman′s influential contributions. Primarily intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the social and behavioral sciences, counseling, and education, Moral Development and Reality will also appeal to scholars in these disciplines.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51695188607249,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51695189721361,"sku":"CIN0761923896G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52618645668113,"sku":"NLS9780761923893","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0761923896.jpg?v=1751232902"},{"product_id":"moral-maturity-book-john-c-gibbs-9780805804256","title":"Moral Maturity","description":"The traditional production measure of moral judgment has been the Moral Judgment Interview (MJI), which uses hypothetical moral dilemmas to elicit moral judgment.
