Waddell mainly focuses on aspects of the mythology associated with four well-known Irish archaeological landscapes: Newgrange and the Boyne Valley, the royal sites of Rathcroghan in County Roscommon, Navan in County Armagh, and Tara in County Meath. Their mythological associations permit the pursuit of the archaeological implications of several mythic themes, namely sacral kingship, a sovereignty goddess, solar cosmology, and the perception of an Otherworld. *** This is quite a worthwhile study. This is a survey of the many rituals and beliefs that were vitally important elements of life in ancient Ireland over several thousand years from at least 4000 BC. Driven by a very human desire to make sense of the world and transform their lives, people created sacred spaces and monuments to facilitate communication with the gods and with ancestral figures. A multiplicity of sacred phenomena were a part of everyday experience, with landscapes and objects often holding unworldly meaning. Written for a general readership, this wide-ranging study draws on archaeological evidence and on what is known about ritual practices in other cultures to address the difficult question of what beliefs might lie behind certain ritual activities. Sometimes it is possible to make a plausible guess as to what these may have been. A circle of stones was more than just a way of marking a sacred space, the round plan was an expression of a belief in a circular, cyclical cosmos as witnessed in the path of the sun and the fixed stars, and in the rhythm of the year. Sun worship is recorded throughout prehistory and is apparent not just at famous sites like Newgrange but in imagery in gold and bronze at a later date. The great disc of the sun traveled across the daytime sky and at night was believed to descend beneath the earth in the west, traversing a mysterious underworld, to rise again in the east. Funerary ceremonies, solar symbolism, magical metalworking, an enduring belief in the cosmic circle, fertility rites, idol worship and much more were all a part of a great pagan tapestry. Veneration of the old gods survived well into Christian times.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49786735296785,"sku":"NGR9781913934927","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52809001500945,"sku":"GOR014625563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1913934926.jpg?v=1751282364"},{"product_id":"prehistoric-archaeology-of-ireland-book-john-waddell-9781869857394","title":"The Prehistoric Archaeology of Ireland","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50340014817553,"sku":"GOR006431985","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50840434082065,"sku":"GOR006237480","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1869857399.jpg?v=1751218013"},{"product_id":"john-and-jeanie-fly-book-john-waddell-9780615219462","title":"John and Jeanie Fly","description":"If you're interested in the Law of Attraction and enjoy seeing how people make it work for them, you'll delight in this book.John and Jeanie Fly is the uplifting story of two people who are the first to experience an ability humanity has been dreaming of since the beginning of time. Skeptics don't believe them, and many find their ideas about the Law of Attraction shocking. Others attempt to elevate them to religious icons, while the government tries almost anything to keep what they've discovered from getting to the wrong people. This lively, contemporary story shows how the principles discussed by Abraham-Hicks, Seth, and the Conversations with God books permeate our lives, both when we consciously use these ideas and when we don't--bringing the Law of Attraction alive, intimately and in depth.Beginning with, Jeanie and I were feeling good, and then things got better, their adventures demonstrate we can lead rewarding lives--full of surprises, creativity, and mastery--without suffering or having to fight forces of darkness. Medieval Irish literature is rich in mythic themes and some of these are used as a starting point. Some myths are of great antiquity and some were invented by contemporary authors. It is a challenging source, first explored in the author's earlier work Archaeology and Celtic Myth and this work will elaborate on some of the themes pursued there and introduce some new ones. Combining literary and archaeological evidence chapters deal with the construction of the past, illustrating how the Irish medieval world invented aspects of the past; the abuses of myth presented in later literature; the evidence for the survival of pagan beliefs and practices well into medieval times in Ireland; evidence to illustrate the key elements of the institution of sacral kingship, a consideration of sacred trees; mythology of the underworld and its archaeological expressions and the equine aspects of the myths attached to the Irish goddess Macha (linked to Navan Fort) and her Welsh counterpart Rhiannon. John Waddell brings a lifetimes experience of studying Irish history, Bronze Age archaeology and Celtic mythology in this personal and lively exploration of mythology and its archaeological expression.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51888614703377,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51888614768913,"sku":"GOR009801873","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781785709753.jpg?v=1754651203"},{"product_id":"of-laundries-and-rabbits-book-john-waddell-9780595520398","title":"Of Laundries and Rabbits","description":"This autobiography in two parts by husband and wife presents a remarkable insight into life in Britain during the last century, especially the thirties and early war years, and is a valuable and readable source of information for generations to follow Ellen's account of growing up amidst the hardships of life in a home wedged between a mainline railway and a canal in Kensal Town where money was earned taking in laundry is really quite dramatic and riveting. Their origins and subsequent history were slowly revealed when linguistic studies and archaeological discoveries in the nineteenth century began to expose a rich and complex narrative that is still being clarified today. A series of dramatic finds in France and Germany in particular have brought these ancient peoples to scholarly and popular attention. This was a prehistoric world that offered an intricate picture of connectivity and diversity across much of Europe.
