Today, an understanding of storytelling is invaluable as we seek to orient ourselves within a flood of raw information and an unprecedented variety of supposedly true accounts. In Stories Make the World, award-winning screenwriter Stephen Most offers a captivating, refreshingly heartfelt exploration of how documentary filmmakers and other storytellers come to understand their subjects and cast light on the world through their art. Drawing on the author's decades of experience behind the scenes of television and film documentaries, this is an indispensable account of the principles and paradoxes that attend the quest to represent reality truthfully.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52751627092241,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52751627452689,"sku":"NIN9781592645053","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781592645053.jpg?v=1763558425"},{"product_id":"esther-book-jonathan-grossman-9781575062211","title":"Esther","description":"Using narrative devices such as allusions and free associations, multivalent expressions, and irony, the author of Esther wrote a story that is about a Jewish woman, Esther, during the time of the Persian exile of Yehudites, and the Persian king, Ahasuerus, who was in power at the time. At various junctures, the author also used secret writing, or we could say that he conveys mixed messages: one is a surface message, but another, often conflicting message lies beneath the surface. For instance, the outer portrayal of the king as one of the main protagonists is an ironic strategy used by the author to highlight the king’s impotent, indecisive, “antihero” status. He may wield authority—as symbolized by his twice-delegated signet ring—but he remains powerless. Among all the concealments in the story, the concealment of God stands out as the most prominent and influential example.  A growing number of scholars regard the book of Esther as a “comic diversion,” the function and intention of which are to entertain the reader. However, Grossman is more convinced by Mikhail Bakhtin’s approach, and he labels his application of this approach to the reading of Esther as “theological carnivalesque.” Bakhtin viewed the carnival (or the carnivalesque genre) as a challenge by the masses to the governing establishment and to accepted social conventions. He described the carnival as an eruption of ever-present but suppressed popular sentiments. The connection between the story of Esther and Bakhtin’s characterization of the carnivalesque in narrative is evident especially in the book of Esther’s use of the motifs of “reversal” and “transformation.” For example, the young girl Esther is transformed from an exiled Jewess into a queen in one of the turnabouts that characterize the narrative. Many more examples are provided in this analysis of one of the Bible’s most fascinating books.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53181297950993,"sku":"NLS9781575062211","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781575062211.jpg?v=1772239407"},{"product_id":"abraham-the-story-of-a-journey-book-jonathan-grossman-9781592645046","title":"Abraham: The Story of a Journey","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53482654957841,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53482655252753,"sku":"NGR9781592645046","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781592645046.jpg?v=1777587939"},{"product_id":"sacrificial-service-book-jonathan-grossman-9781592647309","title":"The Sacrificial Service","description":"For many, the world of sacrifices lies at the farthest edge of the Torah - a realm of altars and animals that feels remote from the concerns of modern life. Yet the opening chapters of Leviticus remind us that this seemingly distant domain once pulsed with the very heartbeat of Israel's spiritual life.\nProf. Jonathan Grossman examines these chapters with exquisite sensitivity and seeks to uncover the values and inner logic behind each offering - and so presents a new perspective on sacrifices that can make this complex world accessible to the contemporary reader. What kind of religious consciousness is expressed through the voluntary burnt offering, grain offering, and peace offering? How do the obligatory sin and guilt offerings shape responsibility, repair, and return?\nFollowing the sequence of the biblical verses, the author situates his analysis within an ongoing dialogue spanning the halakhic midrashim, medieval commentators, and modern scholarship.\nThrough close attention to legal details, literary structure, and word choice, The Sacrificial Service: Gestures of Flesh and Spirit reveals the distinct religious intention embodied each sacrifice, and the\nparticular form of spiritual expression it offers to the one who brings it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53578540876049,"sku":"NIN9781592647309","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781592647309.jpg?v=1779312569"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-jonathan-grossman.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
