Turner's oils and watercolours, combined with documentary research, shows that the artist experimented with new pigments and paint formulations throughout his life, as well as taking an interest in scientific theories of the day related to painting. Turner was largely self-educated, and his painting methods were self-taught too. They were not selected to produce long-lasting works. Today it is difficult to appreciate his ideas, when many paintings have darkened and altered; an understanding of the technical processes used by Turner sheds a new light on his personality. This edition includes an additional chapter on discoveries in Turner's use of materials.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49568625459473,"sku":"GOR002270740","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49915759952145,"sku":"GOR003213733","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50485774483729,"sku":"CIN1854372025G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51528022032657,"sku":"GOR010949625","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51817481765137,"sku":"CIN1854372025VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51841804730641,"sku":"GOR014422926","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854372025.jpg?v=1751429322"},{"product_id":"turner-s-painting-techniques-book-joyce-townsend-9781854371256","title":"Turner's Painting Techniques","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49611903009041,"sku":"GOR011250109","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49618887573777,"sku":"GOR003750377","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854371258.jpg?v=1750866780"},{"product_id":"preparation-for-painting-book-joyce-h-townsend-9781904982326","title":"Preparation for Painting","description":"The aesthetic qualities of a painted work of art are determined by composition, the colours used and the application method. Equally important are the support and its preparation. Preparatory layers are fundamental to the creative process and to the perception of the work: they influence the final surface texture, the paints' luminosity and the durability of a painting. For centuries painters were well aware of these facts and took great care in this stage of the process. These papers were presented at the first conference devoted to preparatory layers used by artists, organised by the working group 'Paintings: scientific study, conservation and restoration' within the Conservation Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM-CC) in 2007 at the British Museum, London. A wide range of issues is covered including the consideration of the preparatory layer(s)' function: optical properties, terminology, as well as materials and techniques used in the preparation of more unusual supports. The results of technical examination, experimental reconstruction and analysis of documentary sources provide fascinating insights into the relationships between supports, preparatory layers and artistic forms of expression; they offer new insights on the origin and dissemination of certain techniques and related questions of artistic exchange. Furthermore, the influence of preparatory layers on mechanical properties, changes in appearance and deterioration as well as the impact on conservation treatment decisions are explored. The influence of the environment on traditional and modern materials is addressed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49856905675025,"sku":"GOR006144703","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52694739157265,"sku":"NLS9781904982326","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904982328.jpg?v=1750900737"},{"product_id":"conservation-science-2007-book-joyce-h-townsend-9781904982340","title":"Conservation Science 2007","description":"Conservation Science 2007 was organised jointly by the Institute of Conservation (Icon) Heritage Science Group (formerly the Institute of Conservation Science, ICS, at the time the conference was first planned), the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and the University of Milan, Italy, and held at the Politecnico di Milano 10-11 May 2007. This was the second ICS conference: Conservation Science 2002 (Archetype Publications 2003) was held in Edinburgh, UK, in 2002. Conservation Science 2007 had four aims: To initiate a debate about the meaning of 'a conservation scientist' around the world To present the best new research in conservation science To address themes not covered by recent conferences Knowledge transfer, networking and communication Almost all of the papers from the plenary session From science laboratory to conservation practice, both papers and poster abstracts from the three working sessions on Developments in conservation practice, Non-destructive testing, Paper, wood and other polymers and posters on the theme of Architecture are published here. The 30 papers have all been peer reviewed. This volume provides a valuable overview of current research being carried out worldwide in conservation science. The energy of formation of ICS, supplemented by support from the National Museums of Scotland, Action G8 of COST (European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technological Research) and Historic Scotland, has resulted in this fully refereed publicaiton of 42 papers which present current research, strategies for cultural heritage management and risk assessment, case histories and reviews. The role of conservation science in the understanding of material properties, the selection of conservation treatments and the evaluation of past treatments is common to all. The book is divided into three sections. The first, Preventive Conservation, includes contributions on the deterioration of historic textiles; the movement of painted wooden panels; dimensional changes in bark paintings; showcase environments; particles and dust in museums etc. This is followed by the section on Conservation Methods, which includes laser cleaning; chromatography; adhesives for textiles; mortars for mosaics and corrosion inhibitors for iron artefacts. In the final section, Non-Destructive Testing, the reader is taken into a world of acronyms - XRF, SEM, LA-ICPMS, PIXE, THM-GCMS, ATR, CPSEM-EDX - while some more easily written techniques including dendrochronology, colorimetry, eddy current testing, accelerated light testing, neutron radiography etc. are discussed. These techniques are applied to a range of materials - from Rembrandt to Roman coins; from aero engines to alkyd resins; from hats to hallmarks; manuscripts to mercury. This volume will be appreciated by all those interested in the examination of works of art and objects in collections, their interaction with their present and past environments and the quest for improved methods of preserving them. Papers from the conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland 22-24 May 2002.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52694740730129,"sku":"NLS9781873132883","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781873132883.jpg?v=1774346225"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-joyce-townsend.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
