At the same time, the Ministry of Transportation had established the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, the mission of which would be to oversee air navigation and the country's newly established airports. In 1932, Egypt's first airline - Misr Airwork - was established, named after the Misr Bank, which took an 85 per cent participation in the airline. Following the formation of the United Arab Republic by Egypt and Syria in 1958, Misrair was renamed United Arab Airlines (UAA). Syrian Airways merged with UAA, which took over all routes and the equipment of the Syrian carrier. In the meantime, UAA had ordered its first jet aircraft (Comets). The association with Syria was ended in 1960, when the Syrian government established Syrian Arab Airways. In October 1971, following Egypt's changing its name to Arab Republic of Egypt, UAA was renamed Egyptair. This wonderfully illustrated book explores the fascinating history of Africa's oldest airline, against the everchanging geopolitical climate.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49750220865809,"sku":"NGR9781802823851","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1802823859.jpg?v=1751280654"},{"product_id":"alitalia-book-jozef-mols-9781802826760","title":"Alitalia","description":"The story of Alitalia is one of many mergers in post-war Italy, followed by expansion and ending in a series of subsequent bankruptcies. Alitalia was set up in 1946 as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali as a result of an Anglo-Italian agreement with the Italian government (60 per cent) and BEA (40 per cent) as shareholders. The airline took to the sky on May 5, 1947 and transported in its first year some 10,000 passengers. For domestic flights, the airline used Fiat G-12 aircraft whereas international and intercontinental routes were served with Savoia-Marchetti SM.95 aircraft. On October 31, 1957, Alitalia merged with Linee Aeree Italiane. By that time, the shares were in the hands of the Italian Ministry of the Treasury, employees of Alitalia and KLM. In 1950, the Douglas DC4 was introduced. Starting in 1964, the airline would become the 'airline of the Pope' whenever he traveled abroad. By 1970, Alitalia had become the first European airline to fly with a fleet of all jets including Boeings, Caravelles and Douglas aircraft. In 1981, Alitalia started up Aermediterranea to replace defunct Itavia on the Italian domestic scene. Notwithstanding a rapid expansion, Alitalia encountered financial problems. In 2008, a group of investors around Sylvio Berlusconi formed the Compagnia Aerea Italiana (CAI) consortium to buy bankrupt Alitalia and to merge the airline with another bankrupt Italian carrier (low cost carrier Air One). On December 12, 2008, Alitalia's profitable assets were transferred to CAI leaving the debts to the Italian tax payers. On January 13, 2009, the 'new' Alitalia launched operations. The airline entered administration in 2017 following years of unprofitability. On 24 August 2021, Alitalia announced that it would cease operations on 15 October 2021. On 15 October 2021, in a hybrid reorganization, Alitalia sold its entire operation to ITA Airways, a newly formed state-owned flag carrier.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49752833884433,"sku":"NGR9781802826760","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1802826769.jpg?v=1751411556"},{"product_id":"china-airlines-book-jozef-mols-9781802823837","title":"China Airlines","description":"The history of China Airlines as flag carrier of the Republic of China (Taiwan) goes back to the development of aviation on mainland China. At the end of the second Kuomintang\/Communist civil war in 1949, the government of the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan. In the beginning, the CIA took care of air transport in Taiwan, but, in 1959, the government decided to set up its own airline: China Airlines. Soon afterwards, China Airlines started up its first flights using two PBY-5B amphibious aircraft. In October 1962, the first regular domestic passenger flight took off from Taipei to Hualien, and during the Vietnam War, China Airlines assisted the American forces by carrying out flights for replenishment and evacuation of US military. In the seventies, the airline was transformed from a mainly military into a mainly civil airline, and, upon the arrival of Boeing 707s, China Airlines launched its first intercontinental route from Taipei to San Francisco via Tokyo. In the early nineties, the airline continued to expand its fleet by buying Boeing 747-400s, Boeing 737-800s and Airbus A300-600Rs. In 2011, the government opened up private equity investment, and EADS (Airbus' parent company) obtained a ten per cent stake in the Chinese carrier. Fully illustrated with over 140 images, this book tells the fascinating story of China's national carrier from its earliest years to the present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50037521711377,"sku":"NGR9781802823837","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51356387934481,"sku":"GOR014236193","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1802823832.jpg?v=1750767254"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-jozef-mols.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
