For these three feminists/ philosophers/ speakers/ poets are extraordinarily enriching. Their writings are not dull, nor yet are they limited to having one or two things to say. There are times when they are writing in the sober, tones of a cultural critic, philosopher or psychoanalyst. They have strident feminist voices (Cixous and Irigaray more than Kristeva). They are personal reminiscence modes. They have a relaxed, informal mode in interviews. And, most powerful of all, they have lyrical modes. Thus, Cixous, the most 'poetic' of the three, will break into a visionary, ultra-lyrical way of writing.

Luce Irigaray, too, changes, less frequently than Helene Cixous, from a critical to a lyrical form. Thus, in a piece such as When Our Lips Speak Together, Irigaray will write poetic sentences such as 'Kiss me. Two lips kiss two lips, and openness is ours again.' This is the kind of phrase which never appears in most cultural theorists outside of quotation marks. One doesn't find Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze, Jean Baudrillard, Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes or Jean-Paul Sartre writing 'kiss me' very often.

What marks Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva apart from many cultural theorists and philosophers, then, is this personal, confessional and poetic way of writing, where they directly address the reader as the other, the 'you' in an intimate relationship. Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard, and Jakobson are rarely, if ever, this personal.

KELLY IVES has written widely on feminism, philosophy and art. Everyone has their own opinions, their own interests and realms to defend. There are the liberals who say that nothing should be censored, including pornography. Pornography is seen as part of artistic expression, and if people want to express themselves, they should, and if they want pornography, they should have it. This is the view of liberals such as Peter Webb, who campaigns for freedom of expression, and an art that should 'celebrate' eroticism. This is a familiar viewpoint, which we have heard made many times. In the (male) liberal view, sex is OK, so sexual art must be OK, so that much of pornography must be OK. The 'experts' on sex, the so-called 'sexologists' (Eduard Fuchs, Richard von Krafft-Ebbing, Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Reich) argue that sex is a normal part of life, so it is natural that it should abound in art. Fuchs wrote; ' a]rt has treated erotic themes at almost all periods... it] lies at the root of all human life.'
-
Everyone seems to have their cut-off points, however, their 'standards' of 'taste' and 'decency'. It's a very subjective business, the debates between art and pornography, and between pornography and censorship. As Wendy Moore writes: ' c]ensorship like freedom is an entirely subjective term'. What you like defines yourself. As Pierre Bourdieu put it: ' t]aste classifies, and it classifies the classifier.'

Taste, choice, categorization and classification, then, defines the viewer, the reader, the consumer. Censorship, you might say, defines the culture. And 'sensitive' novelists are wary of writing 'sex scenes', because they know that what they write defines themselves. Yet sex is crucial to art, many artists say. As Gertrude Stein wrote: ' l]iterature - creative literature - unconnected with sex is inconceivable.'

H E L E N E C I X O U S I LOVE YOU: THE JOUISSANCE OF WRITING Helene Cixous is a challenging and lyrical French feminist and writer, author of the influential essay The Laugh of the Medusa and (with Catherine Clement) The Newly-Born Woman. Cixous is immensely productive, writing novels, plays, essays and poetic prose. Her ideas have provoked much debate in feminism: on the body, orgasmic writing, 'feminine' texts ('ecriture feminine'), essentialism and the Nietzschean 'gift'.
Helene Cixous was born in Oran, Algeria, on June 5, 1937. She described her father's background as 'Sephardic - Spain - Morocco - Algeria' and her mother's as 'Ashkenazy - Austria - Hungary - Czechoslavakia (her father) and Spain (her mother)'. She studied at the Universite de Bordeaux, the Sorbonne, and the new, experimental post-1968 Universite de Paris VIII-Vincennes. Her doctoral thesis, L'Exil de James Joyce ou l'art du remplacement was published in 1968 (as The Exile of James Joyce in 1972). His first novel was Inside (1969). Her best known works are The Newly Born Woman (written with Catherine Clement) and the inspiring essay The Laugh of the Medusa (both 1975). In feminist theory, Cixous' most influential works have been The Newly Born Woman, The Laugh of the Medusa, and Castration or Decapitation.

By 1991, Helene Cixous had written some 50 novels, plays, books of poetry, essays and texts (today it's 70+ works, and includes: 23 poetry books, 5 plays and 6 books of essays). She has been aligned with the French publishing house Des Femmes, and collaborated with the experimental Theatre du Soleil (Cixous has worked for years with the theatre director Ariane Mnouchkine). Cixous' plays include Black Sail, White Sail, Portrait of Dora, Drums On the Dam and The Perjured City.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Helene Cixous became the most frequently cited of French feminists and feminist philosophers. Following Angst (1977), Cixous' feminism became more militant (as with many other feminists), and was associated with the Politique et Psychoanalyse ('Psych et Po') women's political group, founded by Antoinette Fouque. Cixous felt she had reached an intellectual limit, and needed to immerse herself in the politics of relationships between women.

Helene Cixous' prose works of the Eighties included La Bataille d'Arcachon (1987), concerning the relations between love, presence and absence, the self and alterity; Manne aux Mandelstams aux Mandelas (1988) was about the Russian poet, Osip Mandelstam, who died in the Stalin era, and Nelson Mandela; Entre l'ecriture (1986) is a collection of writing about writing; Jours de l'an (1990) concerns notions of authorship, the relationship between the writer and writing.

The text has been revised and updated for this edition.

Illustrated, with a revised text. Kristeva has written of love in a way that is not facile, demeaning, banal, stereotypical, sexist or pornographic. Her pronouncements on love are quite different from those in the 'classic' texts of love, such as Ovid's poems, or the mediaeval Art of Love, or Elizabethan sonnet sequences, or Stendhal's De l'Amour, or Denis de Rougement's L'Amour et l'occident (Love in the Western World). When Kristeva writes -

Vertigo of identity, vertigo of words: love, of the individual, is that sudden revelation, that irremediable cataclysm, of which one speaks only after the fact. Julia Kristeva evokes the wildness of love, the loss of self and the eruption of desire, without sounding idiotic. When Kristeva writes that in love one assumes the right to be extraordinary, it is a great description of being in love. Kristeva is right to describe love as the inrush of total subjectivity, an infinity of subjectivity. In Kristeva's psycho-poetic reading, love's the inrush of the totally extraordinary, but at the expense of commonsense (as lovers learn, painfully):

Love is the time and space in which I assumes the right to be extraordinary.

For these three feminists/ philosophers/ speakers/ poets are extraordinarily enriching. Their writings are not dull, nor yet are they limited to having one or two things to say. Rather, they say a lot, about a lot. Sometimes they write things that are outrageous, at other times they are incredibly, searingly poignant. They annoy many feminists - their insistence on the body and biology, for instance, aggravates some theorists.'

EXTRACT FROM THE INTRODUCTION

Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva all have different modes of writing.
