One doesn't find Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze, Jean Baudrillard, Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes or Jean-Paul Sartre writing 'kiss me' very often. \u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e What marks Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva apart from many cultural theorists and philosophers, then, is this personal, confessional and poetic way of writing, where they directly address the reader as the other, the 'you' in an intimate relationship. Everyone has their own opinions, their own interests and realms to defend. There are the liberals who say that nothing should be censored, including pornography. Pornography is seen as part of artistic expression, and if people want to express themselves, they should, and if they want pornography, they should have it. This is the view of liberals such as Peter Webb, who campaigns for freedom of expression, and an art that should 'celebrate' eroticism. This is a familiar viewpoint, which we have heard made many times. In the (male) liberal view, sex is OK, so sexual art must be OK, so that much of pornography must be OK. The 'experts' on sex, the so-called 'sexologists' (Eduard Fuchs, Richard von Krafft-Ebbing, Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Reich) argue that sex is a normal part of life, so it is natural that it should abound in art. Fuchs wrote; ' a]rt has treated erotic themes at almost all periods...  it] lies at the root of all human life.' \u003c\/p\u003e - \u003cp\u003e Everyone seems to have their cut-off points, however, their 'standards' of 'taste' and 'decency'. It's a very subjective business, the debates between art and pornography, and between pornography and censorship. As Wendy Moore writes: ' c]ensorship like freedom is an entirely subjective term'. What you like defines yourself. As Pierre Bourdieu put it: ' t]aste classifies, and it classifies the classifier.' \u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e Taste, choice, categorization and classification, then, defines the viewer, the reader, the consumer. She described her father's background as 'Sephardic - Spain - Morocco - Algeria' and her mother's as 'Ashkenazy - Austria - Hungary - Czechoslavakia (her father) and Spain (her mother)'. She studied at the Universite de Bordeaux, the Sorbonne, and the new, experimental post-1968 Universite de Paris VIII-Vincennes. Her doctoral thesis, L'Exil de James Joyce ou l'art du remplacement was published in 1968 (as The Exile of James Joyce in 1972). His first novel was Inside (1969). Her best known works are The Newly Born Woman (written with Catherine Clement) and the inspiring essay The Laugh of the Medusa (both 1975). In feminist theory, Cixous' most influential works have been The Newly Born Woman, The Laugh of the Medusa, and Castration or Decapitation. \u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e By 1991, Helene Cixous had written some 50 novels, plays, books of poetry, essays and texts (today it's 70+ works, and includes: 23 poetry books, 5 plays and 6 books of essays). She has been aligned with the French publishing house Des Femmes, and collaborated with the experimental Theatre du Soleil (Cixous has worked for years with the theatre director Ariane Mnouchkine). Cixous' plays include Black Sail, White Sail, Portrait of Dora, Drums On the Dam and The Perjured City. \u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e In the late 1970s and 1980s, Helene Cixous became the most frequently cited of French feminists and feminist philosophers.
