The work was first exhibited at Les Rencontres in Arles in 2016 and awarded the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro and the Fotopress Grant. Abril documents and conceptualises the dangers and damage caused by women's lack of legal, safe and free access to abortion. She draws on the past to highlight the long, continuing erosion of women's reproductive rights through to the present-day, weaving together questions of ethics and morality, to reveal a staggering series of social triggers, stigmas, and taboos around abortion that have been largely invisible until now.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738203857169,"sku":"NGR9781911306245","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1911306243.jpg?v=1751347529"},{"product_id":"on-abortion-book-laia-abril-9781911306870","title":"On Abortion","description":"Laia Abri's On Rape is a visualisation of the origin of gender-based stereotypes and myths, as well as the failing structures of law and order, that continue to perpetuate rape culture. Abril collates and interweaves compiled testimonies, political proclamations, historical archives, popular and traditional beliefs, as well as society's structural failures to deal with sexual violence. To avoid feeding the systemic victim-blaming society, Abril switches the visual narrative from the survivors to the institu tions, allowing her opportunity to address transgenerational trauma and social accountability. 'On Rape' is the second chapter of Laia Abril's long-term project 'A History of Misogyny', a visual research through his torical and contemporary comparisons of the systemic control of women in the world. Laia Abril is a research-based artist working with photography, text and sound. She focusses on long-term projects on uneasy and hidden realities about women rights, grief and bio-politics. She is the author of several award winning books: The Epilogue (2014, Dewi Lewis), Lobismuller (2016, RM) and On Abortion (2018 Dewi Lewis) nominated for the Deutsche Bêrse Prize and the winner of the Aperture-Paris Photo Best Book Award. She has exhibited in more than 15 countries and her work is in collections such as the Centre Pompidou, FRAC, Musee de l'Elysee, Fotomuseum Winterthur, MoCP and MNAC. Her career has been recognized with the Prix de la Photo in Arles, The Hood Medal in London and the FOAM Paul Huf Award in Amsterdam, among others. With their warm feel of a family documentary, her images dislocate viewers, who find themselves suddenly trapped in the intimacy of others and required to take a stance on uncomfortable realities that remain veiled in society. Abril combines photography with other multimedia tools, such as video and graphic design, in a work in progress which La Fabrica attests to in its PHotoBolsillo collection. Laia Abril (Barcelona, 1986) is a photographer and multi platform storyteller. After finishing her degree in Journalism she moved to New York to attend ICP courses, where she decided to focus her projects in telling intimate stories which raises uneasy realities related with femininity. In 2009 when she enrolled for 2 years in FABRICA - the Artist Residency of the Benetton Research Centre in Italy. In 2009 and 2010 she was a finalist of the Ian Parry, participating in the exhibition at the Getty Gallery in London both years. 63 photos","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064650105105,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064652333329,"sku":"NIN9788416248605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52659185778961,"sku":"NLS9788416248605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/8416248605.jpg?v=1751318756"},{"product_id":"on-mass-hysteria-book-laia-abril-9781916915114","title":"On Mass Hysteria","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51216315056401,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51216317546769,"sku":"NGR9781916915114","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1916915116.jpg?v=1751315197"},{"product_id":"laia-abril-lobismuller-book-laia-abril-9788416282647","title":"Laia Abril: Lobismuller","description":"\"The Werewolf of Allariz\" was a woman who lived in 19th-century Spain. Known as Manuel Blanco Romasanta, but named Manuela at birth, the legendary \"werewolf\" - now believed to have lived with a rare syndrome of intersexuality - was Spain's first documented serial killer. Beautiful and eerie, Lobismuller reconstructs from a female perspective the story of the most enigmatic and bloodthirsty criminal in Spanish history. Earning the title of \"the Tallow Man,\" due to his habit of converting his victims' fat into high-quality soap, Manuel admitted to nine murders at his 1853 trial. And yet he pleaded not guilty, for he was suffering, he claimed, from a curse that turned him into a wolf. This eerily beautiful artist's book by Spanish photographer Laia Abril, who studied at the International Center of Photography in New York and worked at COLORS magazine, is an unusual document of a haunting history in which the forces of criminality, sexuality and social marginalisation coalesced into something deadly. 107 photographs","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51514991411473,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51514992034065,"sku":"NGR9788416282647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52597542125841,"sku":"NLS9788416282647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/8416282641.jpg?v=1751033077"},{"product_id":"backway-book-laia-abril-9788417975937","title":"The Backway","description":"Documenting the harrowing journey taken by migrants from West Africa to Europe Published with RUIDO Photo. VULNERABILITY. ACCOUNTABILITY","description":"With this new issue entitled “(After)care“, The Eyes explores the methods and approaches of photographers who address the most traumatic chapters of our individual and collective histories. After collaborating with SMITH (Transgalactic, 2020) and Johny Pitts (B-Side, 2021), we invited the Spanish artist Laia Abril to take over the content of the magazine. This issue explores the role of responsibility in the process of photography. Many questions are raised in this issue: how do we portray our deepest wounds? What is the significance of vulnerability in the creation of photographs? How can we ensure that the violence of the world is not repeated through the violence of images? This issue of The Eyes features a variety of works and books by artists who all represent, in their own way, a practice of “photographic care”. The works address subjects as diverse as colonial wars, natural disasters, sexual and gender violence, and disability. Texts and interviews with researchers and artists broaden the reflection on this subject, which is as yet little discussed.
