This revised second edition addresses the needs of an ever-evolving field, with new contributions considering the role of digital media in dance practice; the expansion of performance philosophy; and the increasing importance of practice-as-research. A two-part structure divides the book’s contributions into:   • Why Dance History? – the ideas, issues and key conversations that underpin any study of the history of theatrical dance.   • Researching and Writing – discussions of the methodologies and approaches behind any successful research in this area.   Everyone involved with dance creates and carries with them a history, and this volume explores the ways in which these histories might be used in performance-making – from memories which establish identity to re-invention or preservation through shared and personal heritages. Considering the potential significance of studying dance history for scholars, philosophers, choreographers, dancers and students alike, Rethinking Dance History is an essential starting point for anyone intrigued by the rich history and many directions of dance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50335738593553,"sku":"GOR013932450","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51020546474257,"sku":"NIN9781138682917","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51865128010001,"sku":"GOR008960024","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150664298769,"sku":"NLS9781138682917","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138682918.jpg?v=1750951774"},{"product_id":"rethinking-dance-history-book-larraine-nicholas-9780415287470","title":"Rethinking Dance History","description":"By taking a fresh approach to the study of history in general, Alexandra Carter's Rethinking Dance History offers new perspectives on important periods in dance history and seeks to address some of the gaps and silences left within that history. Encompassing ballet, South Asian, modern dance forms and much more, this book provides exciting new research on topics as diverse as:  *the Victorian music hall  *film musicals and popular music videos  *the impact of Neoclassical fashion on ballet  *women's influence on early modern dance  *methods of dance reconstruction.  Featuring work by some of the major voices in dance writing and discourse, this unique anthology will prove invaluable for both scholars and practitioners, and a source of interest for anyone who is fascinated by dance's rich and multi-layered history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50469383667985,"sku":"GOR006303129","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53434626834705,"sku":"GOR005225710","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415287472.jpg?v=1751197913"},{"product_id":"dancing-in-utopia-book-larraine-nicholas-9781804131930","title":"Dancing in Utopia","description":"Bought in 1925 by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, the Devon estate of Dartington Hall earned itself a place in the annals of utopian schemes through the Elmhirsts' conviction that arts, education and work could all be integrated into an abundant life for the participation of everyone. From the perspective of the time, when dance was not necessarily given equality with other arts, they believed in dance as an art for the betterment of society. As early as 1932 a Dance School was built on the site. It offered professional training in modern dance, and acted as a base for community outreach. From the 1960s, Dartington College of Arts became a fulcrum for intercontinental exchanges and the Dartington Dance Festivals of the 1970s provided inspiration for a generation of independent and radical choreographers. After Dartington College of Arts moved from the estate in 2010, many dance artists were able to develop their work in the vacated studios. Schumacher College, Dartington's ecological education centre, meanwhile evolved degree qualifications that combined rigorous science with discovery methods deriving from the embodied training that dancers had been developing. This new edition of the book, first published in 2007, assesses Dartington's dance legacy in its centenary year, with insights into dance of the twenty-first century. For students of history, it provides a lens through which to view a century of change in dance and society. Enthusiasts of Dartington Hall will find here a compelling narrative about exceptional artists working within the often impossible demands of utopian dreams.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52530764939537,"sku":"NLS9781804131930","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52755506397457,"sku":"NIN9781804131930","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781804131930.jpg?v=1760653753"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-larraine-nicholas.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
