The book brings together new research on the activities of Dundee's businessmen, civic elites, intellectuals, social reformers, urban planners and working classes to reveal a civic image that differs radically from the \"juteopolis\" myth. Jute's domination of the local economy was shortlived, and its influence on modern perceptions of the city has been over-played. This book, exploring the development of Dundee before and after the heyday of jute, offer a contribution to the history of urban society and its management in Scotland in the 19th century and to a growing body of work on textile and manufacturing towns in this period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49535472337169,"sku":"GOR004758137","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50051001483537,"sku":"GOR006117936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53256388673809,"sku":"GOR014837112","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53486942421265,"sku":"GOR013270777","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/186232171X.jpg?v=1751155679"},{"product_id":"meeting-places-scientific-congresses-and-urban-identity-in-victorian-britain-book-louise-miskell-9781409452379","title":"Meeting Places: Scientific Congresses and Urban Identity in Victorian Britain","description":"The promotion of knowledge was a major preoccupation of the Victorian era and, beginning in 1831 with the establishment of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, a number of national bodies were founded which used annual, week-long meetings held each year in a different town or city as their main tool of knowledge dissemination. Historians have long recognised the power of 'cultural capital' in the competitive climate of the mid-Victorian years, as towns raced to equip themselves with libraries, newspapers, 'Lit. and Phil.' societies and reading rooms, but the staging of the great annual knowledge festivals of the period have not previously been considered in this context. The four national associations studied are the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science (NAPSS), the Royal Archaeological Institute (RAI) and the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE), who held annual meetings in 62 different provincial towns and cities from 1831 to 1884. In this book it is contended that these meetings were as important as royal visits and major civic ceremonies in providing towns with an opportunity to promote their own status and identity. By deploying a wealth of primary source material, much of which has not been previously utilised by urban historians, this book offers a new and genuinely Britain-wide perspective on a period when comparison and competition with neighbouring places was a constant preoccupation of town leaders.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51116891078929,"sku":"NIN9781409452379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52648377319697,"sku":"NLS9781409452379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1409452379.jpg?v=1751403567"},{"product_id":"new-perspectives-on-welsh-industrial-history-book-louise-miskell-9781786835000","title":"New Perspectives on Welsh Industrial History","description":"This volume tells a story of Welsh industrial history different from the one traditionally dominated by the coal and iron communities of Victorian and Edwardian Wales. Extending the chronological scope from the early eighteenth- to the late twentieth-century, and encompassing a wider range of industries, the contributors combine studies of the internal organisation of workplace and production with outward-facing perspectives of Welsh industry in the context of the global economy. The volume offers important new insights into the companies, the employers, the markets and the money behind some of the key sectors of the Welsh economy – from coal to copper, and from steel to manufacturing – and challenges us to reconsider what we think of as constituting ‘industry’ in Wales.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51510197780753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51510197813521,"sku":"GOR011417880","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52594124980497,"sku":"NLS9781786835000","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1786835002.jpg?v=1751091571"},{"product_id":"swansea-bay-1904-book-louise-miskell-9781841516196","title":"Swansea Bay 1904","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51885804486929,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51885804847377,"sku":"GOR008584258","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781841516196.jpg?v=1754584650"},{"product_id":"intelligent-town-book-louise-miskell-9780708325100","title":"Intelligent Town","description":"This is the first full-length study of Swansea's urban development from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth century. It tells the little known story of how Swansea gained an unrivalled position of influence as an urban centre, which led it briefly to claim to be the 'metropolis of Wales', and how it then lost this status in the face of rapid urban development elsewhere in Wales. As such it provides an important new perspective on Welsh urban history in which the role of Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil and even Bristol are better known as towns of influence in Welsh urban life. It also offers an analysis of how Swansea's experience of urbanisation fits into the wider picture of British urban history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52477015916817,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52477017162001,"sku":"NLS9780708325100","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780708325100.jpg?v=1759844960"},{"product_id":"meeting-places-scientific-congresses-and-urban-identity-in-victorian-britain-book-louise-miskell-9781138267107","title":"Meeting Places: Scientific Congresses and Urban Identity in Victorian Britain","description":"The promotion of knowledge was a major preoccupation of the Victorian era and, beginning in 1831 with the establishment of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, a number of national bodies were founded which used annual, week-long meetings held each year in a different town or city as their main tool of knowledge dissemination.
