From the thousands of early small mines, worked generally under medieval laws, leadmining by the eighteenth century was forced to use capital-intensive methods to cope with deeper deposits and great inflows of water, including very long levels and steam engines. Lead smelters, too, had to adapt and developed new furnaces and used spectacular flues and chimneys in otherwise wild landscapes to reduce pollution problems. By the 1880s, however, imports killed the industry - and only three mines have been successful since, all now closed. Today, and for the foreseeable future, lead ore production in Britain is only a by-product of mining for other minerals.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49525761474833,"sku":"GOR001688758","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50615525114129,"sku":"GOR001710647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0852635966.jpg?v=1750947177"},{"product_id":"millclose-book-lynn-willies-9780907758280","title":"Millclose","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49619505971473,"sku":"GOR003651088","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0907758282.jpg?v=1750851534"},{"product_id":"peak-district-mining-and-quarrying-images-of-england-book-lynn-willies-9780752417103","title":"Peak District Mining and Quarrying: Images of England","description":"Open moors, deep valleys, ancient villages and roadways: the Peak District nowadays is often looked on as a 'playground' for walkers, climbers and those who simply come to appreciate its beauties. But this was also one of England's most important industrial areas, with a history of mining and quarrying stretching back to Roman times and before.  Until the late eighteenth century it was lead alone for which the Peak was famous. In late medieval times the purity of the metal made it particularly suitable for sheet lead and it thus roofed a substantial number of churches, monasteries and castles. By the nineteenth century, however, the industry was in decline faced with cheaper imports from abroad. The exception was Millclose Mine, a desperately important last find in 1929, so becoming Britain's greatest ever lead mine.  The mining of lead and a host of other valuable minerals is covered here along with the quarrying that continues in the Peak, albeit with a fraction of its former workforce. Drawing from their own collection as well as other archives, Lynn Willies and Harry Parker have compiled a comprehensive record of the district's mineral heritage. Shafts and engines, technology and transport, sudden disaster and day-to-day life are revisited here in this unique pictorial exploration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666972057873,"sku":"GOR002413049","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52953356042513,"sku":"GOR014665254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53395128647953,"sku":"GOR006880990","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/075241710X.jpg?v=1761042066"},{"product_id":"finished-labour-of-a-thousand-hands-book-lynn-willies-9780904220605","title":"'Finished Labour of a Thousand Hands'","description":"The Combe Down Stone Quarries, which were the principal supplier of building stone for the great period of building in Bath during the 18th and 19th centuries, form a significant element of the wider landscape of the City of Bath World Heritage Site. Archaeological recording of the mine was required to allow preservation by record of features of archaeological interest. The results of the archaeological recording programme and laser and video scanning survey contribute not only to the study of Bath and its post-medieval development, but also to national and international research in mining and industrial archaeology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53649563058449,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53649563320593,"sku":"NGR9780904220605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780904220605.jpg?v=1781162700"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-lynn-willies.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
