He was a chemist and physicist, a philosopher, theologian and educationalist and a campaigner for political liberty, religious toleration and anti-slavery. His time in Birmingham between 1780 and 1791 was one of the most active periods of his life when he was a member of the Lunar Society and an associate of other influential men in the West Midlands, such as Erasmus Darwin, Matthew Boulton, James Watt and Josiah Wedgwood. In 1791 he was forced to leave Birmingham as a result of the infamous Priestley Riots. A few years later, in 1794, he left England for the United States where he spent the rest of his life. Joseph Priestley and Birmingham contains a collection of articles by historians that focus mainly, but not exclusively, on Priestley's time in Birmingham. It provides a record of an individual whose ideas and activities had a major influence, not only on Birmingham and the West Midlands, but the wider world as well. The publication is a result of work carried out by the \"Joseph Priestley and Birmingham Project\", which was established by Birmingham \u0026amp; District Local History Association to commemorate Priestley's life and achievements, two-hundred years after he died in 1804. The publication is a special edition of the Association's renowned local history journal, the Birmingham Historian. The Heritage Lottery Fund has generously supported the activities of the \"Joseph Priestley and Birmingham Project\", which will also include an exhibition, a town trail, a DVD of Priestley's experiments and the provision of resource material on www.revolutionaryplayers.org.uk in 2005.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50096927277329,"sku":"GOR004396096","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1858582695.jpg?v=1751438142"},{"product_id":"power-to-change-the-world-book-malcolm-dick-9781905036561","title":"The Power to Change the World","description":"James Watt (1736-1819) transformed the steam engine - the most significant invention of the Industrial Revolution. Without Watt there would have been no locomotives, steamships or factories where machines were energised by coal. From the fifteenth century to the twentieth century, this volume not only demonstrates the wide variety of ephemeral publications which have survived to the present day, but also shows how they can be used to interpret history and printing history and culture in particular. Some of the forms of printed ephemera discussed will be familiar to scholars such as chapbooks and commercially-printed posters whilst others, such as papal indulgences and bellman’s sheets are more unusual. The collection discusses the production, distribution and consumption of ephemera, including how it can be used demonstrate changes to print culture over time. This volume aims to demonstrate that printed ephemera, in its many and varied forms, is worthy of serious academic study.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52122841710865,"sku":"NLS9781789979008","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781789979008.jpg?v=1757443207"},{"product_id":"letterpress-printing-book-caroline-archerparr-9781800794214","title":"Letterpress Printing","description":"Letterpress Printing: Past, Present, Future brings together scholars, curators, collectors and printers to assess the current state of letterpress printing. It acknowledges the decline of letterpress as a commercial printing technique and considers the risks this poses for letterpress’s future. However, in describing the many uses to which letterpress is put and the diverse communities of printers who still work with it, the book celebrates the tenacity of letterpress as a process which continues to thrive despite such challenges. Letterpress Printing examines the continuing life of letterpress and applauds its revival through describing the circumstances in which it flourishes and the many ways it is now used. By setting this revival in the context of its ostensible decline, the book sets out the ways in which current practice draws upon and preserves the history of printing while taking it in new and unexpected directions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52688382066961,"sku":"NLS9781800794214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800794214.jpg?v=1762332772"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-malcolm-dick.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
