These great works of art were gradually collected through the centuries by the archdukes of Austria and the later emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. Following the marriage in 1477 between Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian of Austria there were close links between the ruling house of Habsburg and the Low Countries, a situation which continued until the end of the Ancien Regime in 1789. In a series of essays by leading scholars, this book explores the history of the collection and the emergence of the various pictorial genres. The exceptionally early development of history, portrait, landscape and genre painting in the Low Countries laid the foundations for the unprecedented flowering of both Flemish and Dutch painting in the 17th century. Vienna has agreed to lend an outstanding selection of 54 top works, all dating from the 15th and 16th centuries and all originating from the Southern Netherlands. Their artistic merit is unparalleled. For a period of three months (from October 5th 2011 until January 15th 2012) paintings by Jan van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Hans Memling, Gerard David, Michiel Sittow, Juan de Flandes, Jan Gossaert, Joos van Cleve, Joachim Patinir, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and other masters will supplement the already impressive collection of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges. This is the official catalogue of the event.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51150807761169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51150808580369,"sku":"GOR014187592","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53433700090129,"sku":"GOR013295524","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9020962027.jpg?v=1751223304"},{"product_id":"bruegel-the-hand-of-the-master-book-manfred-sellink-9789492677822","title":"Bruegel - The Hand of the Master","description":"'Essays in Context': all results of the investigations into Bruegel’s drawings and paintings collected in a special anniversary edition     Bruegel. The Hand of the Master was the first ever exhibition to unite paintings, drawings and prints by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It was the result of six years of research that also involved input from numerous experts in the fields of art history, conservation and science.    The curatorial team – Elke Oberthaler, Sabine Pénot, Manfred Sellink and Ron Spronk, with Alice Hoppe-Harnoncourt – invited these experts to present findings from their own research at the 2018 symposium The Hand of the Master: Materials and Techniques of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. All the papers presented at the symposium are collected in this publication, Essays in Context, a special 450th anniversary edition in commemoration of the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1569.       The focus is on insights derived from the artworks themselves. The results of the investigations into Bruegel’s drawings and paintings using modern imaging techniques, the natural sciences and dendrochronology, as well as the observations by the paintings’ restorers, provide brand-new information. The analysis of Bruegel’s compositions and what he actually depicted (objects, clothes, gestures) is seen within the wider context of the life and times of the artist and his patrons. Rounded up by the latest research into Bruegel’s life, the historical art market and previous attitudes to his oeuvre, the entire volume is intended to offer new directions for future study.  Five essays by the curators, initially only available in the e-book version of the 2018 exhibition catalogue, are included too.    Bruegel’s inventions and stories create artworks with a timeless power, and this volume, containing 24 essays and more than 500 illustrations, provides a comprehensive survey of the artist’s oeuvre and will be an indispensable resource for Bruegel fans and scholars alike.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51331090284817,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51331092709649,"sku":"CIN9492677822G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9492677822.jpg?v=1750873349"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-manfred-sellink.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
