Malcolm Bradbury opens with an account of American fiction and poetry over the first 20 years of this century, contrasting the naturalism of Theodore Dreiser with the experimentalism of Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound. Dennis Welland discusses the literature of the inter-war years, dominated by the writing of Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Moving through the next decades to the new post modern forms of the late 1960s onwards, Jerome Klinkowitz considers writers as diverse as Kurt Vonnegut, Ken Kesey and Philip Roth. There are sections on American poetry and a chapter on American theatre in which the work of America's first great dramatist, Eugene O'Neill, is assessed. \"The Penguin History of Literature\" is a critical survey of English and American literature in ten volumes. Each volume is a collection of original essays specially commissioned for the series, which, taken together, cover 14 centuries of literature from the Anglo-Saxons to the present.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49585711448337,"sku":"GOR002371282","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49622962110737,"sku":"GOR003581674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140177590.gif?v=1751258488"},{"product_id":"literature-of-the-united-states-book-marcus-cunliffe-9780140136265","title":"The Literature of the United States","description":"A general introduction to the main themes and figures of the American literary scene, from colonial times to the present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49615249080593,"sku":"GOR001904674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49658335199505,"sku":"GOR003045845","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50320977395985,"sku":"GOR003796320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140136266.jpg?v=1751290459"},{"product_id":"literature-of-the-united-states-book-marcus-cunliffe-9780140202892","title":"The Literature of the United States","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49618927976721,"sku":"GOR004750879","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50928726966545,"sku":"GOR004826539","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140202897.jpg?v=1750908886"},{"product_id":"literature-of-the-united-states-book-marcus-cunliffe-9780140225143","title":"The Literature of the United States","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49633451704593,"sku":"GOR004881905","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49661875355921,"sku":"GOR004398994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51825755095313,"sku":"CIN0140225145G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52094346166545,"sku":"GOR008843792","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140225145.jpg?v=1751356004"},{"product_id":"nation-takes-shape-book-marcus-cunliffe-9780226126678","title":"The Nation Takes Shape","description":"Marcus Cunliffe, whom the Washington Post and Times Herald calls \"a master historian capable of seeing his subject whole,\" has written a cogent and revealing study of America's first half-century under the federal Constitution. How can this be? The abolitionist in question, Charles Edwards Lester, had confessed that \"he would sooner subject his child to Southern slavery, than have him to be a free laborer of England.\" Lester was in fact referring to the \"white\" or \"wage\" slavery of the mother country. In a three part study, Cunliffe explores the context of chattel and wage slavery in Britain and the United States. He first outlines the evolution of the concept of wage slavery in Europe and the United States, demonstrating how this concept bore upon opinions about chattel slavery in America. In his second section, Cunliffe discusses the precariousness of Anglo-American relationships during the period of 1830 to 1860. In their resentment of British rebukes aimed at the persistence of slavery in a democracy, Americans retaliated by claiming that British wage slavery was worse than American plantation slavery. Cunliffe concludes by charting the career of Lester, the seemingly atypical New York abolitionist. Lester displayed a conviction that Britain was a corrupt and brutal society, most of whose leading citizens detested America. Cunliffe maintains that Lester's opinions were shared by many of his countrymen during the antebellum decades; in this sense he may have been more truly representative of American attitudes than either Southerners like Fitzhugh or Northerner abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51008355369233,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008358285585,"sku":"NIN9780820332413","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125324804369,"sku":"NLS9780820332413","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0820332410.jpg?v=1750787044"},{"product_id":"george-washington-book-marcus-cunliffe-9781258227203","title":"George Washington","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51022221148433,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51022222786833,"sku":"NIN9781258227203","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1258227207.jpg?v=1750753976"},{"product_id":"george-washington-book-marcus-cunliffe-9781258226787","title":"George Washington","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51022332231953,"sku":"NIN9781258226787","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1258226782.jpg?v=1751113037"},{"product_id":"american-presidents-and-the-presidency-rare-book-marcus-cunliffe-1722955089lee","title":"American Presidents and the Presidency","description":"1972.
