This 'painted chamber' is a unique example of a branch of the art of painting which was extremely popular in the seventeenth century, although hardly any of it now remains. Bol's ensemble has always been surrounded by mysteries. While some areas of the painting may have become darker, others may have faded or even changed colour entirely. The present colour range and modelling in an old picture may deviate greatly from that which the painter intended. As this can have far-reaching consequences for our interpretation of an artist's pictorial, illusionistic and aesthetic intentions, it is crucial that both conservators and art historians are made aware of the optical changes in old pictures. Changing Pictures is the first extensive art historical study on the discoloration of old master paintings, concentrating on oil paintings from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The point of departure for this book is contemporaneous writings on oil painting technique and on the use of colour and light and shade in paintings - texts written by both professional and amateur painters, art lovers or connoisseurs, and ranging from manuscripts with succinct practical instructions to early published scholarly treatises which expound in detail the myriad aspects of the art of painting. In this book, the historical research has been conducted in parallel with a technical study of paintings and the artificial ageing of reconstructed traditional paints. This integrated approach provides new insight into the composition of the paints used by the old masters. It also reveals that both the degree and the nature of the discoloration can depend on a large number of material and technical variables, including the quality of the pigments, the type of binding medium and the painting technique. Historical writings also provide valuable understanding of the original colours and modelling of old paintings. By means of several examples of 'changed pictures', the author demonstrates how studies of the old texts - together with examinations of preparatory sketches\/drawings, early copies of the discoloured paintings and our knowledge of the ageing of paint materials - enable us to deduce a painting's original appearance thereby gaining a better insight into the intentions of the artist.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52694737748241,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52694738075921,"sku":"NLS9781873132395","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781873132395.jpg?v=1762388922"},{"product_id":"gerard-de-lairesse-and-his-painted-heavens-book-margriet-van-eikema-hommes-9789463724876","title":"Gerard de Lairesse and his Painted Heavens","description":"In 1672, when the Dutch Republic was under simultaneous attack by four foreign armies, Gerard de Lairesse created a magnificent three-part ceiling painting for one of the main protagonists of this Disaster Year—the powerful former burgomaster of Amsterdam, Andries de Graeff. Technical examination has revealed that Lairesse repeatedly altered his composition and in no fewer than four successive stages, he changed, removed or added figures and objects.  In this book, Margriet van Eikema Hommes, in search of an explanation for this ceiling painting’s intriguing origins, investigates its meaning and purpose. The painter and his patron prove to have been jointly responsible for the iconography, which they repeatedly updated to reflect military and political events in the Disaster Year and the dramatic twists of fate in De Graeff’s own life.  This beautifully illustrated book not only situates the work within its cultural and historical context but also offers an in-depth examination of Lairesse’s painting technique and the way he meticulously designed his ceiling pieces in close dialogue with the architecture of the room.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53626555859217,"sku":"NGR9789463724876","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-margriet-van-eikema-hommes.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
