This is the third volume on the history of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), covering the period 1945 to 1960, and starting with an extraordinary moment in its history. There were such high hopes with the election of Attlee’s Labour government, committed to a series of radical reforms, establishing the Welfare State and nationalising key sectors of the economy. These reforms seemed to offer unique opportunities to move forwards towards what Nye Bevan, the main architect of the NHS, saw as a ‘new world both at home and abroad’. Or did it? This volume explores the challenges as well as the opportunities for radical reform, as these played out between 1945 and 1960. There was renewed industrial unrest, with disputes in the docks and transport industries, despite the best efforts of the Labour Government to contain them. Much remained to be achieved in terms of equalities, and there were challenges when it came to calls for international solidarity in the Cold War context. But still, there had been major developments in terms of trade union education. The T\u0026amp;G had become a much more democratic organisation, and, overall, was a more powerful, progressive force by the end of this period. This volume explores issues with continuing relevance for the trade union and labour movement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558364029201,"sku":"GOR012998658","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51450301382929,"sku":"GOR014284829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53223038681361,"sku":"GOR013165380","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1802077103.jpg?v=1751153860"},{"product_id":"communities-and-caring-book-marjorie-mayo-9780333567517","title":"Communities and Caring","description":"Communities and Caring explores the theoretical background of social policy debates around the mixed economy of welfare in relation to community participation and community development. Whilst providing a critical analysis of New Right Theories, the book explores alternative approaches based on increasing accountability and democratic pluralism, within the framework of active community participation. Drawing upon different experiences both in Europe (including Eastern, as well as Western Europe), in the United States and in the Third World, Marjorie Mayo emphasises the importance of continuing public sector support and resources for community participation and development; without such underlying public sector support, community participation will be unable to meet community needs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49569431519505,"sku":"GOR001363489","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49620478951697,"sku":"GOR008986396","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52589579862289,"sku":"NLS9780333567517","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/033356751X.jpg?v=1759230783"},{"product_id":"community-empowerment-book-marjorie-mayo-9781856493383","title":"Community Empowerment","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49587671990545,"sku":"GOR002850018","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50188871237905,"sku":"GOR005922145","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1856493385.jpg?v=1751433948"},{"product_id":"adult-learning-critical-intelligence-and-social-change-book-marjorie-mayo-9781872941615","title":"Adult Learning, Critical Intelligence and Social Change","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49612920160529,"sku":"GOR004280994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52621439697169,"sku":"GOR002728117","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1872941613.jpg?v=1751420893"},{"product_id":"global-citizens-book-marjorie-mayo-9781842771396","title":"Global Citizens","description":"The dawn of the twenty-first century has been accompanied by an upsurge of anti-capitalist campaigning, challenging the very basis of the New World Economic order. Dramatic events such as the protests from Seattle to Genoa, have captured media headlines. But media headlines leave key questions unanswered, questions about the ultimate significance of the challenges posed by global social movements and the development of civil society, both South and North. This book sets out to explore the lessons from these experiences of social mobilisation. How can non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and the labour and trade union movement develop effective campaigning alliances – without becoming institutionalised and incorporated themselves? How can they maintain an effective balance between winning immediate gains without losing sight of longer-term strategies for transformation? How can they work with celebrities to gain media attention -- without losing control of the message? And how can social movements develop organisational forms that are genuinely representative and democratically accountable, globally? These questions are explored through case studies of particular networks, movements and campaigns, to tackle the causes of social inequality and social injustice. It concludes by exploring lessons for building global challenges to neo-liberal agendas and developing more transformatory approaches.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49622666281233,"sku":"GOR006106728","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49648455975185,"sku":"GOR005262357","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1842771396.jpg?v=1751122780"},{"product_id":"women-in-the-community-book-marjorie-mayo-9780710083845","title":"Women in the Community","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49657574064401,"sku":"GOR003611481","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50112852951313,"sku":"GOR005054737","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071008384X.jpg?v=1750977882"},{"product_id":"changing-communities-book-marjorie-mayo-goldsmiths-colle-9781447329329","title":"Changing Communities","description":"Issues of displacement and dispossession have become defining characteristics of a globalised 21st century. The contributors go on to consider the organization of women who enable other women to go to work, including a case study of experience of Battered Wives’ Centres, a study of Women’s Aid Centres, a discussion of the Working Women’s Charter and the National Abortion Campaign, chapters by members of groups of single-parent families – Mothers in Action and Gingerbread – and a chapter on working with women in community groups, from the perspective of the community worker. Just as they are tied together by global production, trade and finance, citizens in every nation are linked by the institutions of global governance, bringing new dynamics of inclusion and exclusion. For some, globalization provides a sense of solidarity that inspires them to join transnational movements to claim rights from global authorities; for others, globalization has meant greater exposure to the power of global corporations, bureaucracies and scientific experts, thus adding new layers of exclusion to already fragile meanings of citizenship. Globalizing Citizens presents expert analysis from cities and villages in India, South Africa, Nigeria, the Philippines, Kenya, the Gambia and Brazil to explore how forms of global authority shape and build new meanings and practices of citizenship, across local, national and global arenas.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52536575918353,"sku":"NLS9781848134720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781848134720.jpg?v=1760674848"},{"product_id":"changing-communities-book-marjorie-mayo-goldsmiths-colle-9781447329312","title":"Changing Communities","description":"Issues of displacement and dispossession have become defining characteristics of a globalised 21st century.
