Francis 'Frank' Montague Holl (1845-1888) was notable for his tragic social realism as well as his penetrating portraits. Although highly respected in his lifetime, his early death meant that he never fully received the acclaim that his work merited. Holl was a prodigiously talented artist who entered the the Royal Academy Schools at the age of fifteen, where he won a gold medal for religious painting in 1863. A year later, two of his paintings were accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy where he showed work regularly until his death. He was also commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint No Tidings from the Sea. Holl became part of an informal school of social-realist painting that flourished during the 1870s. Its aim was to draw attention to the everyday conditions of the working classes and the poor, and to implicitly criticise the social structures that maintained such conditions. His great subject pictures, often on bleak themes, were frequently criticised for their darkness but found great favour with the public, who empathised with his depictions. Funeral processions, child mortality and grief were very much part of life and his emotive images struck a chord with his audience. In 1879, when Holl exhibited a portrait of the engraver Samuel Cousins at the Royal Academy, it created a sensation. In the nine years of life that remained he painted over 150 portraits: some of the greatest of his age-achievements which can be seen on a par with those of Watts and Millais. His influence was felt in his lifetime and later through the work of Van Gogh, who greatly admired Holl. Exploring in parallel the subject paintings and he portraits, this book considers the importance of Holl's output and his continued relevance today. Leading scholars in the field look at different aspects of Holl's painting, while full catalogue entries examine certain works in detail.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49510903185681,"sku":"GOR005237078","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50159089189137,"sku":"CIN178130016XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50774328869137,"sku":"GOR011580379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53149807968529,"sku":"GOR008932841","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/178130016X.jpg?v=1751443082"},{"product_id":"art-in-the-age-of-queen-victoria-book-mark-bills-9780905173658","title":"Art in the Age of Queen Victoria","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49513992323345,"sku":"GOR004001140","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0905173651.jpg?v=1751364535"},{"product_id":"artist-s-village-book-mark-bills-9780856676963","title":"An Artist's Village","description":"This book tells the story of the impact of George Frederic Watts OM RA (1817-1904) and his wife Mary Seton Watts (nee Fraser-Tytler, 1849-1938) on Compton, a small village in Surrey. Initially, the village acted as an autumnal and winter retreat for the artist and the designer, but became the permanent base for their work and the home of the Watts Gallery, the Compton Pottery with its studios and workshops, and the extraordinary Cemetery Chapel. A nationally significant site, it includes a gallery that holds an internationally important collection, and Arts and Crafts chapel by Mary Watts, a Great Studio house named 'Linnerslease' designed by Sir Ernest George, and the Compton Pottery buildings. More than a guide book, it presents a complete history and guide that will appeal to readers who wish to know the story of a unique artists' village. The book is richly illustrated with new photography, historic photographs and contextual material which give a sense of the significance of art and artists in the late nineteenth-century, and reveal a continuous and living philosophy at the heart of a Surrey village.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49522965414161,"sku":"GOR006263889","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49562959380753,"sku":"GOR012371459","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53506532049169,"sku":"GOR010293890","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0856676969.jpg?v=1751330122"},{"product_id":"art-in-the-age-of-queen-victoria-book-mark-bills-9780853318293","title":"Art in the Age of Queen Victoria","description":"Illustrated from a leading collection of Victorian art, this text introduces key themes within Victorian art through a variety of essays by leading scholars in the field. Most introductory books on Victorian art have sought to cover the tremendous ground of the period through general surveys of key movements and forms of art. This book deals rather with themes that were relevant to the period, revealing a broad scope of expression and opinion within each. In its exploration of themes, the book is heavily illustrated with works from the art collection of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth, whose breadth is reflective of the diversity of art that was created in Britain between 1837 and 1901. It opens with an introductory essay outlining the broad scope of Victorian art, while subsequent essays explore topics including the display of art in the period, the impact of women artists, depictions of the nude, the use of prints, representations of animals, and Victorian sculpture. Published in the cententary year of Queen Victoria's death, the book is a detailed survey of this diverse and innovative period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548739543313,"sku":"GOR005495651","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51296297255185,"sku":"GOR010346188","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853318298.jpg?v=1750980343"},{"product_id":"victorian-salon-book-mark-bills-9780853317487","title":"A Victorian Salon","description":"Published to accompany a major touring exhib ition from January 1999 to September 1999, this book focuses on the collection of Victorian art built up by Merton Russe ll-Cotes and now held in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and M useum, Bournemouth. Mary's book, \"The Word in the Pattern\", which outlined her ideas for the symbols, along with the sources that she drew upon, forms the basis of the text. Illustrating all the decorative detail of the chapel, it shows the richness of meaning with which Mary infused its imagery. A remarkably visual writer, Dickens grew out of a tradition where illustrations formed a significant part of both serial and book. He had long and close friendships with several artists, including Clarkson Stanfield, Daniel Maclise, Frank Stone, and William Powell Frith. He also admired the art of the Old Masters, which he viewed and commented on both in London and during his tours of Europe. Published on the bicentenary anniversary of Dickens's birth, this book explores his artistic opinions and views by analyzing his own words as well as his use of art in his work. His tastes are manifest not only in his novels, but also in his magazine Household Words. The contributors explore how Dickens and his writing influenced Victorian artists who depicted scenes from his novels or drew inspiration from his subjects and characterizations.
