Spanning six decades, Goya’s works on paper reflect the transformation and turmoil of the Enlightenment, the Inquisition, and Spain’s years of constitutional government. Two essays, a detailed chronology, and more than 100 featured artworks illuminate the remarkable breadth and power of Goya’s drawings and prints, situating the artist within his historical moment. The selected pieces document the various phases and qualities of Goya’s graphic work—from his early etchings after Velázquez through print series such as the Caprichos and The Disasters of War to his late lithographs, The Bulls of Bordeaux, and including albums of drawings that reveal the artist’s nightmares, dreams, and visions. It's also a ripping good story.
--- Soho Weekly News

The author, a veteran war correspondent and former prize-winning reporter with The New York Times, has called his new novel asymmetric journalism, a new and original genre that melds real-time reporting with literary fiction.

A bright and privileged young American, Micah Ford, is battered by the great tragedies of modern America. He loses his mother, a nurse, to AIDS. His father is killed on 9/11, and a grandfather dies in Katrina. A girlfriend is murdered in a hate-crime in the Deep South. Micah's biography overlaps his country's: They're both suffering from post-traumatic stress. Both are squarely on the X.

Enlisting in the Army, he discovers a new clarity, nothing less than a new life, through the extreme violence he encounters during a secret mission against ISIS in Iraq. Torture, love, betrayal, a miracle or two, luck, American swagger, Islamist brutality, and a final compass-reading from valor --- it's all in here, in a book that one reviewer has found alarming, poignant and nothing short of brilliant. Another critic called it war porn, or war smut, something akin to pictures of flag-draped coffins returning home: colorful and descriptive, but also prurient.

Cassiano dal Pozzo's print collection was unique in its scope and organisation. Some 3,000 prints are known, in nine albums and many loose impressions mainly divided between the British Library and the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Cassiano (1588-1657) and his younger brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo (1606-89) did not commission printmakers to engrave plates (as they did drawings), buying instead what was available from the flourishing printmaking industry of the time. The material they collected was essentially documentary, and they organised the collection by subject matter: costumes, religious processions and ceremonies, tombs and catafalques, the history of St Peter's, architecture, topography, maps and military engagements, portraits, social and humorous subjects, and so on. This first part of the catalogue presents ceremonies, costumes, portrait and genre prints. A remarkable proportion of the prints are not to be found in the existing literature, and many constitute additions to the known works of major printmakers. Indeed Cassiano's collection has been described as 'so far outside the common range of print collectors both in the seventeenth century and today that a very high proportion of its contents is excessively rare and will only with great difficulty be found elsewhere'. This ground-breaking catalogue will be an essential resource not only for students of prints, but for all those studying European visual culture in the seventeenth century.
The dal Pozzo print collection was unique in its scope and organisation. Some 3,000 prints are known, in fourteen albums and many loose impressions mainly divided between the British Library and the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Acquired from the flourishing printmaking industry of the time, the prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657) and his younger brother Carlo Antonio (1606-89) were largely documentary and carefully ordered by subject matter: costumes, religious processions and ceremonies, tombs and catafalques, portraits, social and humorous subjects, architecture, topography, maps and military engagements. This second and final part of the catalogue presents the architectural, topographical and military prints. Over 750 prints are devoted to ancient and modern Rome: from an album entirely dedicated to St Peter's - the largest building project of the day - to another covering the major pilgrim and other churches in Rome, including exterior views, plans, altarpieces and statuary. The palaces and villas of Rome are also well represented, including Falda's famous Palazzi di Roma, while the ancient city is evoked through two compilations of sixteenth-century prints: Hieronymous Cock's Roman ruins and the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae with many reconstructions of ancient buildings. The collection stretched well beyond Rome however, and included architecture in other Italian and European cities (including Rubens's Palazzi di Genova and Perret's engravings of the Escorial). The European theatre of war is represented in over 600 prints recording major sixteenth- and seventeenth-century military engagements: an extraordinary assemblage that testifies to the popularity of this genre of printmaking that not only celebrated victory but provided information to convey news of military events. This ground-breaking catalogue will be an essential resource not only for students of prints, but for all those studying European visual culture in the seventeenth century.
The great tradition of printmaking and drawing in Spain has rarely been examined, in part because of the misapprehension that Spanish artists did not draw. This spectacular volume of drawings and prints will examine the history of graphic practice in Spain for the first time, providing an overview of more than two hundred years of artistic production. The story begins in the mid sixteenth century with the building of Philip IIs monastery of the Escorial near Madrid, which brought to Spain a large number of foreign artists, such as the Italian Pellegrino Tibaldi and the Flemish printmaker Pedro Perret, whose engravings of the Escorial are among the most remarkable architectural prints of the period. Moving on to the Golden Age or Siglo di Oro a dramatic flourishing of artistic and literary endeavour in Spain during the seventeenth century, and concluding with the Enlightenment, and a remarkable collection of Goya prints, in particular featuring traditionally Spanish subjects such as bullfighting, and works by Goyas contemporaries Lucas, Camaron and the Tiepolo family of Madrid.
