Chinese premier Xi Jinping graces our television screens and news headlines on a regular basis. But even after a decade in power, he remains shrouded in mystery. From growing up with a father purged in Mao's Cultural Revolution and his mission to eradicate poverty, to his persecution of Uyghur Muslims and paranoia about being likened to Winnie-the-Pooh, Xi Jinping is a man obscured by caricatures. In this short, essential primer, historian and writer Michael Dillon unveils the character of Xi Jinping - arguably the world's most powerful man - to truly understand his grip on China, what he wants and how the West gets him wrong. But this is not just the story of Xi; this is the story of today's largest economic powerhouse, which dives into the crux of the issue - what does Xi's leadership of China mean for the rest of the world, and what will he do next?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49547524374801,"sku":"GOR013664718","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49746103730449,"sku":"NGR9781529914450","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50298355187985,"sku":"GOR013917734","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52327261602065,"sku":"NLS9781529914450","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52789074559249,"sku":"GOR014622262","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1529914450.jpg?v=1751406594"},{"product_id":"china-book-michael-dillon-9781780763811","title":"China","description":"Barely a century removed from the struggling and outdated Qing Empire, China has managed to reinvent itself on an unprecedented scale: from Empire, to Communist state, to hybrid capitalist superpower. Here at last is Dillon\/Jivaka’s extraordinary life story told in his own words. Out of the Ordinary captures Dillon\/Jivaka’s various journeys – to Oxford, into medicine, across the world by ship – within the major narratives of his gender and religious journeys. Moving chronologically, Dillon\/Jivaka was from Lismullin House, County Meath, but spent his childhood in Folkestone, England, where he was raised by spinster aunts, telling of his days at Oxford immersed in theology, classics, and rowing. He recounts his hormonal transition while working as an auto mechanic and fire watcher in Bristol during World War II and describes his surgical transition under Sir Harold Gillies while Dillon himself attended medical school at Trinity College, Dublin (1945-51). He details his travels as a ship’s surgeon in the British Merchant Navy with extensive commentary on his engagement with colonial and postcolonial subjects in Asia, followed by his ‘outing’ by the British press while he served aboard The City of Bath. Out of the Ordinary is not only a unique record of early gender affirmation but also a compelling account of religious conversion in the mid-twentieth century. Dillon\/Jivaka chronicles his gradual shift from Anglican Christianity to the esoteric spiritual systems of George Gurdjieff and Peter Ouspensky, to Theravada and finally Mahayana Buddhism. He concludes his memoir with the contested circumstances of his Buddhist monastic ordination in India and Tibet. Ultimately, while Dillon\/Jivaka died before becoming a monk, his novice ordination was significant: it made him the first white European man to be ordained in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. This first-person narrative, written in the early 1960s and first published more than a generation later in the US by Fordham University Press, is both ahead of its time and distinctly of its time and class, with Dillon’s views being sometimes enlightened, sometimes colonial. A Foreword by Susan Stryker from the Fordham University Press edition describes Dillon as ‘a seeker after truth, who traveled wherever his queries led him’. An Afterword, ‘A Mapless Journey’, by London-based literary agent Andrew Hewson – unique to the Lilliput Press edition – traces the typescript memoir’s provenance and preservation prior to its eventual publication. An introductory biographical essay by consultant psychologist Aidan Collins gives an overview of the timeline of this remarkable individual’s history. Out of the Ordinary is a landmark publication that sets free a singular voice from within the history of the transgender movement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49739768037649,"sku":"NGR9781843518211","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50287197946129,"sku":"GOR013913553","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/184351821X.jpg?v=1751432462"},{"product_id":"memoirs-of-an-ordinary-boy-book-michael-dillon-9781789558821","title":"Memoirs Of An Ordinary Boy","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49863938605329,"sku":"GOR013802266","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51119656796433,"sku":"NIN9781789558821","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1789558824.jpg?v=1751313456"},{"product_id":"contemporary-china-an-introduction-book-michael-dillon-9780415343190","title":"Contemporary China - An Introduction","description":"This book presents a concise introduction to contemporary China. Their magnificent mosques, richly colourful markets, and distinctive styles of food and dress help the Muslim minorities stand out in the complex ethnic patchwork of modern China. Today, the influence of Islam is strongest in China's north-west, and it is on this fascinating region that this illustrated introduction focuses. In a text directed at scholars and travellers alike, Michael Dillon examines each of the country's ten Muslim groups, sketching the history of its arrival in China, explaining its languages and customs, and describing its members work and daily life. He includes portraits of the most important Muslim centres, from the Hui towns of the Ningxia region to the Uyghur city of Kashghar in China's far western reaches. Short discussions of related topics, from religious architecture to language and belief, combine with the main text to offer new insights into the lives and ways of one of China's most intriguing ethnic groups.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50710354690321,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50710354854161,"sku":"GOR014043783","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195875044.jpg?v=1751132790"},{"product_id":"miles-from-memphis-book-michael-dillon-9780986057717","title":"Miles from Memphis","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51010532409617,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51010535686417,"sku":"NIN9780986057717","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0986057711.jpg?v=1750851989"},{"product_id":"tommy-s-magic-adventures-book-michael-dillon-9781800311206","title":"Tommy's Magic Adventures","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51095898751249,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51095901831441,"sku":"NIN9781800311206","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800311206.jpg?v=1751249157"},{"product_id":"mongolia-book-michael-dillon-9781838606701","title":"Mongolia","description":"Mongolia remains a beautiful barren land of spectacularly clothed horse-riders, nomadic romance and windswept landscape. Michael Dillon, one of the foremost experts on the region, seeks to tell the modern history of this fascinating country. He investigates its history of repression, the slaughter of the country’s Buddhists, its painful experiences under Soviet rule and dictatorship, and its history of corruption. Drawing on the work of Martin Heidegger, Politics of Security establishes the relationship between Heidegger's readical hermeneutical phenomenology and politics and the fundamental link between politics, the tragic and the ethical. It breaks new ground by providing an etymology of security, tracing the word back to the Greek asphaleia (not to trip up or fall down), and a unique political reading of Oedipus Rex . Michael Dillon traces the roots of desire for security to the metaphysical desire for certitude, and points out that our way of seeking that security is embedded in 20th century technology, thus resulting in a global crisis. Politics of Security will be invaluable to both political theorists and philosophers, and to anyone concerned with international relations, continental philosophy or the work of Martin Heidegger.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51595493998865,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51595494457617,"sku":"GOR010773806","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125292527889,"sku":"NLS9780415129619","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52470323609873,"sku":"GOR007848804","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52735230083345,"sku":"NIN9780415129619","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415129613.jpg?v=1751135155"},{"product_id":"zhou-enlai-book-michael-dillon-9781784536152","title":"Zhou Enlai","description":"Enigmatic, Eminence grise, the ‘power behind the throne’ – these phrases sum up Zhou Enlai’s long and varied, but always pivotal, political career in the Chinese Communist Party from the 1920s to 1970s. Born in 1898, Zhou witnessed several of the most important events in China’s modern history and was a close associate of both the nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek and communist leader Mao Zedong, whom he served under as China’s first premier from 1949 until 1976. Zhou was also a major ally of Deng Xiaoping – a source, for example, of major influence on his ‘Four Modernizations’ in agriculture, industry, science and technology, and the military. He was thus the prime architect of China’s drive towards superpower status and one of the key determinants of China’s central role in the modern world. Zhou does not conform readily to any of the stereotypes of communist leaders, Chinese or otherwise. Cultivated and urbane, he was a sympathetic and intellectual character, who was well-liked by non-communists, foreigners and his staff. He was one of the most complex figures in the politics of contemporary China, and certainly one of the most interesting, although his influence was never all that obvious. In this book, Michael Dillon restores him to his rightful place in history and analyses the role of a man who was ‘a genuine statesman rather than just a political operator’.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51833811042577,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51833811239185,"sku":"GOR014418187","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52587004330257,"sku":"NLS9781784536152","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781784536152.jpg?v=1753019032"},{"product_id":"dictionary-of-chinese-history-book-michael-dillon-9780714631073","title":"Dictionary of Chinese History","description":"First Published in 1979. Sufi and other Islamic orders such as the Ikhwani have played a key role in establishing the identity of the Hui, especially in north-western China, and these are examined in detail as is the growth of religious education and organisation and the use of the Arabic and Persian languages. A meeting point between China and the wider world, the city has become the beating heart of Chinese capitalism, a place of initiative, confidence, and forward thinking. It is a city of stark contradictions, suffused with both extreme wealth and poverty, luxury living, and a highly organised criminal underworld.     Michael Dillon explores the full history of Shanghai, from its origins as a small fishing village to the bustling financial hub of today. The city has been central to some of the most turbulent events in China’s modern history, from the British and French colonial concessions of the nineteenth century, to the birth of the Chinese Communist Party and its vital role in Chinese economics and politics today. Shanghai is a fascinating portrait of China’s most dynamic city—and explores its future role in the country’s development.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52169697919249,"sku":"NGR9780300270631","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53644461113617,"sku":"NLS9780300270631","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780300270631.jpg?v=1776334391"},{"product_id":"politics-of-security-book-michael-dillon-9780415129602","title":"Politics of Security","description":"In this critique of security studies, with insights into the thinking of Heidegger, Foucault, Derrida, Levinas and Arendt, Michael Dillon contributes to the rethinking of some of the fundamentals of international politics developing what might be called a political philosophy of continental thought. Politics of Security will be invaluable to both political theorists and philosophers, and to anyone concerned with international relations, continental philosophy or the work of Martin Heidegger.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52334694990097,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52334695481617,"sku":"NLS9780415129602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415129602.jpg?v=1758157683"},{"product_id":"mongolia-book-michael-dillon-9781784535490","title":"Mongolia","description":"Since declaring independence from China in 1911, Mongolia has suffered from repression, turbulent Soviet rule, dictatorships and corruption.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52355243180305,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52355246686481,"sku":"NLS9781784535490","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781784535490.jpg?v=1758184800"},{"product_id":"deconstructing-international-politics-book-michael-dillon-9780415556705","title":"Deconstructing International Politics","description":"Michael Dillon is internationally regarded for his contributions by political philosophers, international relations scholars and security studies experts, as well as by philosophers more broadly. Sufi and other Islamic orders such as the Ikhwani have played a key role in establishing the identity of the Hui, especially in north-western China, and these are examined in detail as is the growth of religious education and organisation and the use of the Arabic and Persian languages. Lifting nearly a billion people out of poverty, Deng Xiaoping's 'Four Modernisations' called for reform in agriculture, industry, military, and science and technology. Today these reforms are considered to be the crucial turning point in modern Chinese history, enabling China to effectively harness its previously-latent power in its quest to become a global economic superpower. Just ten years after this tremendous achievement, Deng's brutal suppression of the democracy movement at Tiananmen Square severely undermined his international and domestic reputation. To explain the seeming contradictions between Deng Xiaoping's desire for economic liberalization and political conservatism, Michael Dillon's biography utilizes recently-released Chinese sources to detail Deng Xiaoping's emergence from a minority, second-class community in the Sichuan province, via education in France, to his meteoric rise to the top of the CCP's political hierarchy, illustrating the ways in which his life of struggle and survival shaped his political career. Dillon's biography addresses Xiaoping as both an intensely committed communist capable of playing a principal role in the Great Leap Forward from 1958 to 1961, while incurring the wrath of Mao only ten years later as he was exiled and purged during the Cultural Revolution. Emphasizing Deng Xiaoping's effectiveness as a party operator and political bruiser rather than an intellectual capable of formulating the reforms for which he eventually took credit, this book sheds light on Deng's ability to capitalize upon the planning expertise of other party members. This biography of the central figure in China's economic liberalization is essential for any reader interested in or affected by China's rise to global prominence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52702225989905,"sku":"NGR9781780768953","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53134759887121,"sku":"GOR014765210","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781780768953.jpg?v=1762559934"},{"product_id":"spirit-of-life-book-michael-dillon-9781979332675","title":"The Spirit of Life","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52759157473553,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52759158358289,"sku":"NIN9781979332675","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781979332675.jpg?v=1763583509"},{"product_id":"china-book-michael-dillon-9780700704392","title":"China","description":"Compiled by specialists from the University of Durham Department of East Asian Studies, this new reference work contains approximately 1500 entries covering Chinese civilisation from Peking Man to the present day.
