Land for a Lost Generation follows their progress over the next two decades. The first-person narrative is controlled by one of the girls, Vera, who takes an unexpected opportunity to marry a wounded army officer from a tenant-farming family shortly after the Armistice. Obliged to purchase their farm at the top of the market or risk losing it, the couple's struggle through the ensuing agricultural depression provides a central focus for the novel. The novel covers one of the most fascinating periods of British history, embracing political and socio-economic upheaval against a backdrop of technological advance, particularly in the countryside. Always overshadowing these developments in the wake of the Great Depression, however, is the fascist menace, which is leading inexorably towards another conflagration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539966664977,"sku":"GOR013451819","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49648333717777,"sku":"GOR012576373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0722351208.jpg?v=1751200149"},{"product_id":"afterwards-our-buildings-shape-us-book-michael-j-richards-9781787196728","title":"Afterwards Our Buildings Shape Us","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49622829433105,"sku":"GOR013742488","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1787196720.jpg?v=1751059587"},{"product_id":"nuclear-weapon-yield-determination-through-nano-indentation-of-thermally-degrade-book-michael-j-richards-9781288311453","title":"Nuclear Weapon Yield Determination through Nano Indentation of Thermally Degraded Automobile Paint","description":"This work investigated the suitability of automotive clearcoat as a nuclear weapon yield sensor, using the change in elastic modulus as the primary metric. The AFIT Xenon Thermal Simulator (AXTS) was used to simulate a nuclear thermal pulse. The elastic modulus of the clearcoat was measured using a nano indenter. During this research the power density of the AXTS beam was increased from 44.7 to 63.7 W\/cm2. The morphological steps through which automobile paint proceeds as it thermally degrades were identified and correlated with temperatures. A computer model was created and used to ensure that the paint's time-temperature response to the AXTS pulse was comparable to that of a replicate nuclear thermal pulse. Clearcoat's physical properties exhibit a low sensitivity to incident thermal energy. Variability among these properties remains essentially unchanged by exposure to the thermal pulse. A weak correlation between change in elastic modulus and exposure time was identified. A similarly weak correlation between exposure time and each of load on sample, harmonic stiffness, and hardness was also identified. It was concluded that these correlation were too weak to be used for post-detonation forensics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51224091001105,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51224094933265,"sku":"NIN9781288311453","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1288311451.jpg?v=1751271515"},{"product_id":"story-of-a-honeymoon-in-1814-book-michael-j-richards-9781068795404","title":"The Story of a Honeymoon in 1814","description":"This book presents a social history based on archival material from three generations of the Caldcleugh, Lewis and Ancrum families and their friends' journals, diaries, paintings and letters, from 1749 to 1898. The story unfolds with a honeymoon journal kept by Margaret, after her marriage to merchant Arthur Lewis, in Croydon, 1814. A detailed insight into travel through Regency Britain in a cramped landaulet carriage is unveiled as are their visits to historical, geological and industrial sites of interest such as Lancaster Cathedral, Peak Cavern (Devil's Arse) and the Derby Silk Mill, revealing the places and people they meet. The couple's family and friends are introduced in more detail and the emigration of Margaret's father to America in 1768 is recorded, along with his two elder brothers who ended up on opposite sides in the American War of Independence. Follow Emily, Margaret's youngest daughter, as she enters into an 'arranged' marriage with Dr Ancrum, surgeon superintendent of the British Naval Hospital, Valparaiso (1848-1857). Some of the events in this section are now commemorated by the issue of postage stamps by the Pitcairn Island Government of British Overseas Territories, using images from the book. In 1857 Emily returned to England with her small children on a voyage that was hazardous in the extreme. Ships that were hardly seaworthy, Yellow Fever sickness, and the possibility that she might die leaving her children in the hands of strangers - this was a harrowing story over which love ultimately triumphed. Such was the impact of Emily's words on the author, that included in the book is an original score he composed for solo piano, to celebrate her resilience. This is a remarkable story and journey, beautifully constructed through painstaking research and which provides a wealth of supporting and fascinating information.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51629646545169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51629646774545,"sku":"NGR9781068795404","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1068795409.jpg?v=1761387825"},{"product_id":"land-for-a-lost-generation-book-michael-j-richards-9783991302087","title":"Land for a Lost Generation","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52660041842961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52660042629393,"sku":"NLS9783991302087","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783991302087.jpg?v=1762264369"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-michael-j-richards.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
