Beginning with the simplest eateries and foods and culminating with the emergence of a genuinely American way of fine dining, Repast takes readers on a culinary tour of early-twentieth-century restaurants and dining. The innovations introduced at the time in ingredients, technologies, meal service, and cuisine transformed the act of eating in public in ways that persist to this day. Illustrated with photographs from the time as well as color plates reproducing menus from the New York Public Library s Buttolph Menu Collection, Repast is a remarkable record of the American palate.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49623518871825,"sku":"GOR013215952","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50116170121489,"sku":"CIN0393070670G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50353324654865,"sku":"CIN0393070670A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51328306610449,"sku":"CIN0393070670VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0393070670.jpg?v=1751006892"},{"product_id":"dreamland-book-michael-lesy-9781565844858","title":"Dreamland","description":"A photographic exploration of 20th-century America, this text features over 200 photographs taken between 1900 and 1910, which capture the vigour and high hopes of those years. We are all familiar with the iconic images of poverty that are usually associated with the project. The agency's mission, however, went well beyond photographing dispossessed rural people, and this book is proof. It includes 410 remarkable images made in large cities (including New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Pittsburgh) as well as dozens of small towns and villages throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. These are images that have rarely been seen—some twenty percent have never been published before—images that present a portrait of a vanished America, a visual record of everyday existence that enhances and enlarges our assumptions about the era. Setting the pictures in context, Michael Lesy's iconoclastic, groundbreaking text intercuts excerpts from primary and secondary sources (some given as \"assigned reading\" to the project photographers) with an extended look at Roy Stryker, the FSA's controversial director. It presents the FSA photographs in a very different light from the bleak vision to which we are accustomed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50174954635537,"sku":"CIN0393049434G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53502708089105,"sku":"CIN0393049434VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0393049434.jpg?v=1750878792"},{"product_id":"bearing-witness-book-michael-lesy-phd-9780394509679","title":"Bearing Witness","description":"species offreshwater fish in Pennsylvania. The photos were in the trash because the machines that printed them made them so fast — duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates — that the people on the processing line couldn’t stop them. Week after week, Lesy took home thousands of snapshots from the dumpster. He studied them as if they were archeological evidence. By the end of the summer, he’d formed his own collection of images of American life. He took that collection with him when he returned to Wisconsin to finish his graduate work in American history. His understanding of the snapshots from California as reflections of the troubled state of American society influenced the PhD research he was doing in Wisconsin — research that became the American classic Wisconsin Death Trip (1973). Over the next six years, Lesy added to his collection of California snapshots with hundreds of snapshots that had been left unclaimed and then discarded by a photo processor in Cleveland. While Lesy looked through other people’s lives in pictures, the world was coming apart at the seams. The Vietnam War, the murderous rampage of the Manson Family, and the Attica State Prison uprising filled news headlines — and the general public carried on their lives, with hope and abandon and everything in between: chaos, cruelty, familial bonds and breaks, materialism, lawlessness, unwitting humor. Lesy’s collection of snapshots from the 1970s is a time capsule of things familiar and alien. Now, fifty years later, everything and nothing about our lives has changed. In Wisconsin Death Trip Lesy pulled back the curtain of “the good old days” to reveal the stark reality of American life from 1890 to 1910. The anonymous images in Snapshots 1971–77 serve as prophesies of present-day broken dreams, toils, and tribulations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50190422901009,"sku":"CIN0922233500G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009647706385,"sku":"NIN9780922233502","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51324503916817,"sku":"CIN0922233500VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52655527330065,"sku":"NLS9780922233502","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0922233500.jpg?v=1751235661"},{"product_id":"dreamland-book-michael-lesy-9781565843820","title":"Dreamland","description":"This collection features over 200 of William Henry Jackson's photographic images of the USA, chosen from postcards produced and sold by the Detroit Publishing Company for whom he worked. For years, Jackson and his team fanned out across the United States to document the people and places, industry and scenery of the dynamically-changing nation. At the company's height, they sold over seven million images a year. A renowned landscape photographer, Jackson's greatest images are represented: from the towering Flatiron Building in New York to surreal views of Californian cities built in the middle of nowhere; and from immigrant workers in mines and smelters to southern chain gangs and minstrel groups. Its binocular images revealed the world in vivid, three-dimensional detail. Drawing on an enormous, rarely seen collection of stereographic views, Michael Lesy presents images displaying a riot of peoples and cultures, stark class divisions and unsettling glimpses of daily life a century ago. Lesy’s evocative essays reassert the primacy of the stereograph in American visual history.
