Responding to the post-catastrophic situations in the twentieth century, Beckett created characters who often seem to have been through an unknown catastrophe.  Although the importance of catastrophe in Beckett has been noted sporadically, there has been no substantial attempt to discuss his aesthetics and work in relation to it. This collection will therefore serve as the first sustained study to explore the theme of catastrophe in Beckett and will be a highly significant contribution to Beckett studies. The question of language has been discussed in various philosophical, literary, and theoretical works of the twentieth century. However, in many cases, while language has remained the object of discussion, an understanding of the experience of language from within has not been deepened. This book seeks to pay attention to 'the experience of language' and re-thinks its importance in twentieth century thought and literature. It describes how Beckett, Blanchot, and Heidegger experience the force of language. The study focuses on how each in a different way sought to show the force of language as the movement of vacillation, as a metaphorical form of expression. For instance, in Beckett's work Ill Seen Ill Said we find the movement of the veil which at once conceals and reveals its own dissimulation; in Blanchot's work Awaiting Oblivion, which depicts the relation between the bodies of two nameless characters ('he' and 'she') who spend the whole night together in a room having a conversation, we 'see' the space of conversation; and in Heidegger's work « A Dialogue on Language dialogue is experienced as the balance - the space of measuring the hidden 'weight' of language. Contents: Beckett - Veil, the Scene of Betrayal: IllSeen Ill Said - The Secret of Rhythm - Blanchot - The Redoubling Body: Awaiting Oblivion - Vigilance: Danger Watches over Us - Heidegger - The Most Dangerous of Possessions - The Space of Weighing Language: « A Dialogue on Language.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52138422239505,"sku":"NLS9783906770819","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783906770819.jpg?v=1757562766"},{"product_id":"samuel-beckett-and-catastrophe-book-michiko-tsushima-9783031083679","title":"Samuel Beckett and Catastrophe","description":"Samuel Beckett and Catastrophe is a groundbreaking collection of original essays that explore the relation between Samuel Beckett and catastrophe in terms of war, the Holocaust, nuclear disasters and ecological crisis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52682177839377,"sku":"NLS9783031083679","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037322305809,"sku":"NIN9783031083679","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031083679.jpg?v=1762317480"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-michiko-tsushima.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
