The camouflage, markings and insignia of aircraft that participated in the air battle are recreated, and maps illustrating the bases belonging to the two warring sides (both original and those recreated from archive documents) are presented.

In Soviet historiography, these events have been afforded insufficient attention and, in fact, right up until 1991, not one serious work on this topic had been published. Actually, the first large-scale research undertaken following the collapse of the USSR in the 1990s was conducted by D.B. Khazanov. In his monographs, the events of the first few days of the war are finally researched using an enormous amount of nonfiction literature (including foreign literature), as well as the relatively small amount of archive documents that had been published up until that time; however, owing to the fact that access to archive documents in that period was still very restricted, there were a great number of incidents that went undisclosed in these works and, as a whole, the course of events was examined in general terms (although overall, it was very objective).

Unfortunately, the lack of historiography has enabled some opportunistic authors in recent years to publish several works of pseudo-research, in which disreputable attempts have been made to misrepresent the achievements of the pilots and commanders of the air forces of the Red Army - thus the publication of objective research (based on archive documents) is long overdue; however, it is only in the last few years - with the large-scale declassification of the archives and the new opportunities in document processing - that conducting work of this scale has proved possible. Naturally, this publication does not lay claim to a 100 percent disclosure of this topic, but despite the shortcomings inherent in similar works, it does enable history enthusiasts to follow stage by stage the condition of the Red Army Air Force; their preparations to counter aggression on the part of fascist Germany; and the battle in the air on the first day of the Great Patriotic War.
camouflage-insignia-and-tactical-markings-of-the-aircraft-of-the-red-army-air-fo-book-mikhail-timin-9781804513989
Camouflage, Insignia and Tactical Markings of the Aircraft of the Red Army Air Force in 1941

Nurturing Faith Commentary emerged from a committed desire to provide quality Bible study resources for Christians who come to the scripture with open minds and a desire to go beneath a surface reading. After the Civil War of 1918-1920 the issues of camouflaging were carefully studied, which led to a number of real measures that involved all armed forces of the country. Of course, military aviation was not left out. Along with the development of forms and methods of camouflaging airfields and various buildings, attempts were made to make airplanes as invisible as possible both on the ground and in the sky by applying the camouflage painting, the requirements for which were regularly changed. However, despite the theoretical research, camouflage was not widely used until 1941. Only after the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War were the standard black-and-green camouflage and the scheme for applying the color spots approved. In the meantime, in various units and formations of the Air Force, as well as at aircraft production factories, the camouflages were often applied without observing the prescribed scheme and approved colors. The red five-pointed star insignias were applied on the Soviet airplanes in 1920s-1930s, but the shape, dimensions and locations of the insignias changed several times throughout 1941.Tactical markings on the Red Army airplanes were to be applied in accordance with the Rules for application of identification marks and ciphers on military aircraft of the Red Army Air Force - but those rules were not followed either, and the principles of tactical markings differed along the units and formations of the Air Force. The work presents more than 880 unique photos from Soviet and German archives and private collections, which allowed to reconstruct 470 color side views featuring camouflage, insignias and tactical markings of the aircraft of Red Army Air Force in 1941.
The opening hours of Operation Barbarossa over the Baltic reveal Luftwaffe initiative and Soviet disarray.

Volume 3 of Air Battles Over the Baltic 1941 turns to the Luftwaffe and the German preparations for Operation Barbarossa, examining in unprecedented detail the aerial build-up to the invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941. Drawing extensively upon German and Russian archival sources, Mikhail Timin reconstructs the strategic planning, reconnaissance operations and combat deployments that shaped the opening hours of the war in the Baltic theatre. The volume examines the composition and disposition of Luftwaffe forces assembled against the Baltic Special Military District, including bomber, fighter and reconnaissance formations tasked with achieving immediate air superiority. Particular attention is paid to the activities of the secretive Rowehl reconnaissance units, whose pre-war aerial intelligence-gathering operations over Soviet territory enabled the Germans to identify Soviet airfields, infrastructure and troop concentrations in remarkable detail. At the heart of the book is a meticulous, hour-by-hour reconstruction of the first Luftwaffe attacks of Operation Barbarossa. Timin analyses how German doctrine, operational coordination and concentrated airpower combined to overwhelm Soviet aviation during the opening strikes against airfields across the Baltic region. Although the Soviet Air Force possessed considerable numerical strength, the Luftwaffe entered the campaign with decisive advantages in training, combat experience, reconnaissance and operational preparation.Combining detailed operational analysis with vivid combat narrative, this volume offers one of the most comprehensive studies yet published of the opening air battles on the Eastern Front. Drawing extensively on previously restricted Soviet and German archival material, Mikhail Timin reconstructs the composition, training, and combat readiness of the Red Army's aviation units as they prepared for what would become the opening phase of the Great Patriotic War.The study explores both the rapid expansion of Soviet air power and its systemic weaknesses. It examines the deployment of air units into Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia following their incorporation into the Soviet sphere, while analysing the challenges posed by inadequate infrastructure, logistical shortfalls, and the hurried training of thousands of newly graduated pilots. The book provides an unvarnished assessment of the sweeping organisational reforms of 1938-1940, revealing a force caught between ambition and operational reality. These developments are placed within a wider strategic and political context, including the lessons of the Winter War with Finland and the looming threat of German attack.Richly illustrated with rare photographs, detailed colour profiles, and maps, this volume also brings a human dimension to the story through biographical material on key personnel. It is an essential resource for understanding the strengths, limitations, and vulnerabilities of Soviet air power on the eve of war. This revised and expanded edition features enhanced colour profile captions, additional photographs--including material on pro-Soviet demonstrations in the Baltic states and ground support vehicles at Soviet airfields--and new analytical content examining lessons drawn by the Soviet Air Force from the Winter War. Drawing extensively upon recently declassified Soviet and German archival material, the book reconstructs in extraordinary detail the desperate attempt by the Red Army Air Force to modernise, expand, and prepare for war before the German invasion of 22 June 1941.Far from presenting a confident and fully prepared air arm, Timin reveals an organisation trapped in a state of near chaotic transformation. Existing regiments were stripped of experienced personnel to create new formations; thousands of poorly trained young pilots flooded operational units; obsolete aircraft remained in frontline service; and the hurried introduction of modern types such as the MiG-1, MiG-3, Ar-2 and Il-2 generated as many problems as solutions. Throughout the Baltic Special Military District, Soviet aviation struggled with defective engines, unreliable armament, inadequate infrastructure, unfinished airfields, and a catastrophic shortage of trained crews and technicians. The book provides a uniquely granular account of this crisis. Timin traces the reorganisation of fighter, bomber and reconnaissance units; the expansion of training programmes; the construction of new airfields and concrete runways; and the relentless series of accidents, mechanical failures, and operational shortcomings that plagued Soviet aviation in the first half of 1941. Particularly revealing is the detailed treatment of the MiG-3 fighter programme, whose technical unreliability and difficult handling characteristics severely disrupted combat training in some of the Soviet Union's most important frontline fighter regiments.Extensively illustrated throughout with more than 90 rare black and white photographs, specially commissioned colour aircraft profiles, maps, and biographical studies of Soviet commanders and pilots, this volume offers one of the most detailed English language studies yet published on the condition of the Red Army Air Force on the eve of the German invasion.Combining operational history, technical analysis, archival research, and vivid human detail, Air Battles Over the Baltic 1941 Volume 2 is an essential contribution to understanding why Soviet air power entered the summer of 1941 in such a dangerously fragile condition -- and why the Luftwaffe achieved such devastating success in the opening days of the war. This revised and expanded edition features enhanced colour profile captions, an updated text and new cartography covering the dispositions of the Red Army Air Force. After the destruction wrought by the dawn raids and morning battles, the Luftwaffe pressed home its advantage in the afternoon with a third and fourth wave of attacks. Soviet attempts to regroup and redeploy to secondary airfields were too little, too late. The result was the near-complete collapse of the Red Air Force in the Baltic within a single day. Drawing on Soviet and German archival records, Mikhail Timin reconstructs the sequence of these later actions in detail. He examines how the Luftwaffe targeted dispersal airfields and continued to destroy Soviet aircraft on the ground, while Soviet pilots who managed to take off faced overwhelming odds in the air. The book analyses the desperate measures taken by Soviet commanders to salvage their forces, the shifting of surviving units to new bases, and the chaotic communications that prevented effective counter-action. The volume also considers the overall outcome of the battle: the scale of Soviet losses, the survival of only a fraction of the original force, and the way these events shaped the air campaign in the weeks that followed. Appendices and statistical tables provide detailed data on losses, sorties, and unit movements, offering the most comprehensive reference available on this critical episode. Illustrated with colour profiles, rare photographs, maps, and charts, this volume provides the definitive account of the afternoon battles and their consequences. It completes the first in-depth English-language history of the air war over the Baltic in 1941, showing how the Luftwaffe secured dominance and how the Red Air Force paid the price for unpreparedness and flawed command structures.
