Markers of identity are too often isolated and presented as definitive, then examined and theorised, a process that further naturalises their absoluteness; thus socially generated constructs become socialising categories that assume coercive power. The resulting set of oppositions isolate and delimit: male or female, black or white, straight or gay. A new kind of intervention is needed, an intervention that recognises the validity of the researcher’s own self-reflexivity. Focusing on the way identity is both constructed and constructive, the collection examines the frameworks and practices that deny transgressive possibilities. It seeks to engage in a consciousness raising exercise that documents the damaging nature of assigned social positions and either\/or identity constructions. It seeks to progress beyond the socially prescribed categories of race, gender and sex, recognising the need to combine intellectualization and feeling, rationality and affectivity, abstraction and emotion, consciousness and desire. It seeks to develop new types of transdisciplinary frameworks where subjective and political spaces can be universalized while remaining particular, leaving texts open so that identity remains imagined, plural, and continuously shifting. Such an approach restores the complexity of what it means to be human.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49739766104337,"sku":"NGR9781800348950","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800348959.jpg?v=1750994555"},{"product_id":"iraq-war-in-documentary-film-book-monica-michlin-9781138951624","title":"The Iraq War in Documentary Film","description":"This book is the first comprehensive study of documentary film on the Iraq War. In a series of close readings of some thirty American and European works, it analyzes how documentaries on the run-up, unfolding, and aftermath of the war have adopted different points of view and aesthetics in order to address their publics. From the political essay (Fahrenheit 9\/11, Why We Fight) to embedding within the 'grunt point-of-view' (Gunner Palace, The War Tapes), from anti-war activism in the form of cinema verite (Arlington West) to one-on-one confessional interviews with veterans (The Ground Truth, Alive Day Memories), these films challenge our pre-conceptions of the documentary form. As diverse as the films studied here may be in their political perspective and forms of address, and as hybrid a genre as the early 21st century documentary may seem, all of these works focus on the stories that were not being reported by the mainstream media as they unfolded, and reassert documentary's claim to telling and showing the truth about real-world events against a backdrop of other, more dominant narratives about war - in particular, official political discourse, TV news reporting and Hollywood war film.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51201366393105,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51201368129809,"sku":"NGR9781138951624","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138951625.jpg?v=1751016644"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-monica-michlin.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
