In a version of the Fair Unknown motif, the work's eponymous hero, the son of the king of Apulia, falls in love with the queen of Calabria, conceals his identity and serves in her retinue. He undertakes a number of adventures, including participating in a three-day tournament, each day under different colours, before revealing his true identity and marrying her. Alert to the conventions of Arthurian romance from which it pointedly takes ironic distance, Ipomedon invokes the Continental romans d'antiquité in its protagonists' names and in its surprising claim to be the source material for the chronologically earlier Roman de Thèbes. It was popular amongst its contemporary readers, being translated later into three different Middle English versions.\n \nThis book offers the first modern English translation; it also provides explanatory notes, and a full introduction, discussing the author, its audience, dating, sources and analogues, themes, humour and narrative style. It will make this important text, of great interest to medieval romance studies, available to a wider audience.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51626900455697,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51626900652305,"sku":"NGR9781843847458","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51626900717841,"sku":"NIN9781843847458","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52530776113425,"sku":"NLS9781843847458","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1843847450.jpg?v=1751411645"},{"product_id":"heroes-and-anti-heroes-in-medieval-romance-book-neil-m-r-cartlidge-9781843844952","title":"Heroes and Anti-Heroes in Medieval Romance","description":"Investigations into the heroic - or not - behaviour of the protagonists of medieval romance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52135692927249,"sku":"NLS9781843844952","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52755686457617,"sku":"NIN9781843844952","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781843844952.jpg?v=1757550394"},{"product_id":"medieval-marriage-book-neil-m-r-cartlidge-9780859915120","title":"Medieval Marriage","description":"This book uses literary texts to trace the development of medieval thinking about marriage in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, taking into account not only important developments in theological and legal thinking about marriage during this period, but conventions such as courtly love', which affect its portrayal in literary texts. The focus of this study is upon England, and specifically three groups of texts linked together by English manuscripts - the AB'-Group, containing the 'Ancrene Wisse; The Owl and the Nightingale' and its companion-pieces; and finally the 'Life' of St Christina of Markyate and the 'Chanson de Saint Alexis' which she once owned. The author demonstrates the continuity of these texts in their attitude towards marriage, along with continental works such as the letters of Abelard and Heloise, and Chr tien de Troyes' 'Erec et Enide'. Throughout, the volume clearly and accessibly shows how the imaginative literature of the period participated in the evolution of a new and enduring ideology of marriage. It is these boundaries, as they appear in insular romances circulating in English and French, which the essays in this volume address. They include the boundary between reality and fictionality; boundaries between different literary traditions, modes and cultures; and boundaries between different kinds of experience or perception, especially the altered states' associated with sickness, magic, the supernatural, or the divine.
