While there have been numerous other studies of Orientalist art, this timely book will be the first to concentrate specifically on the ways in which British artists have engaged with the Islamic world, stretching from Spain and Morocco in the west, to Afghanistan in the east. It will also reveal the many ways in which the art, architecture, design, dress and topography of Islamic lands have impacted upon British art and culture. As well as providing a visual feast of works, both well-known and previously unpublished from a period ranging from the late eighteenth century to the 1920s, the book will examine other factors that have shaped the relationship between the Christian and Muslim civilizations. Beyond the straightforward desire for imperial gain, these have included the rise of tourism and the expansion of the Grand Tour into the countries of the Middle East; the development of illustrated travel literature; a religious fascination in the landscapes of the Bible; and the search by archaeological expeditions for ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian remains. The authors will particularly explore the ways in which western myths about the Islamic world stood up to actual experience when artists travelled to the Middle East. With paintings, drawings and engravings by artists including Richard Dadd, William Holman Hunt, Edward Lear, Frederic Lord Leighton, David Roberts and Stanley Spencer, this fascinating book will demonstrate that the issues we encounter between Britain and the Islamic world remain as potent today as they were two and a half centuries ago.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49520367108369,"sku":"GOR002627198","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49639290306833,"sku":"GOR007303751","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50819935568145,"sku":"GOR008395744","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854377337.jpg?v=1751450457"},{"product_id":"david-wilkie-book-nicholas-tromans-9781898519201","title":"David Wilkie","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49537272578321,"sku":"GOR006355877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/189851920X.jpg?v=1750835105"},{"product_id":"guide-to-watts-gallery-artists-village-book-nicholas-tromans-9780993390203","title":"A Guide to Watts Gallery - Artists Village","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49550679015697,"sku":"GOR008127550","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50489928155409,"sku":"GOR010427522","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/099339020X.jpg?v=1750820858"},{"product_id":"richard-dadd-the-artist-and-the-asylum-book-nicholas-tromans-9781854379597","title":"Richard Dadd: The Artist and the Asylum","description":"The most brilliant young artist of his generation, Richard Dadd (1817-1876) made his name with a sequence of minutely executed fairy paintings of huge imaginative power. Following a long tour of the Middle East in the early 1840s he succumbed to a 'schizophrenic' illness, murdered his father, fled to France where he attacked another traveller, was apprehended by police and confessed to his crime. On his return to England he was sent to Bethlem Hospital where he remained until he was transferred to the new Broadmoor Hospital for the criminally insane in 1864, where he died. Dadd spent over forty years in Britain's most famous lunatic asylums, never ceasing to work as an artist. Dadd is still best-known for his endlessly mesmerising masterpiece, The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke (Tate), which was immensely popular in the 1960s and 70s and was even the subject of a hit song by the rock band Queen. The story of the rediscovery of his greatest watercolour, The Artist's Halt in the Desert (British Museum), on the television programme The Antiques Roadshow has also more recently entered popular culture.  Interpretations of Dadd's art have been much coloured by Romantic notions of creativity and madness, enthusiasts for Outsider Art, the ideas of Michel Foucault and of the anti-psychiatry movement of the 1960s and 70s. In the first fully illustrated account of Dadd's life and career, the author examines Dadd's artistic legacy and uses his life as a case history to investigate the relationship between art and the treatment of mental illness in the 19th century. In doing so he overturns many myths. Dadd's jailers often acted as patrons, encouraging him to carry on making art and, in his final years in Broadmoor, commissioning him to decorate stage scenery and murals. Tromans traces the critical response to Dadd's work, both during his lifetime and after his death. With the public appetite for Dadd's bewitching art never higher, this long-overdue, eminently readable reassessment provides a vivid account of one of the most fascinating artists of the Victorian era as well as extensive insight into the difficult relationship between art and madness' in nineteenth-century Europe.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49668086595857,"sku":"GOR007129236","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49781054701841,"sku":"GOR013782662","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50141351084305,"sku":"GOR007952383","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854379593.jpg?v=1751421385"},{"product_id":"private-lives-of-pictures-book-nicholas-tromans-9781789146233","title":"The Private Lives of Pictures","description":"The Private Lives of Pictures offers a new history of British art, seen from the perspective of the home. Focusing on the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century, the book takes the reader on a tour of an imaginary Victorian or Edwardian house, stopping in each room to look at the pictures on the walls. The book opens up the intimate history of art in everyday life, and examines many issues including how pictures were chosen for each room, how they were displayed, and what role they played in interior design. Superbly illustrated, The Private Lives of Pictures appeals to readers interested in both art and social history, and the history of interiors.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743415640337,"sku":"NGR9781789146233","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50791919026449,"sku":"GOR012592323","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52980889452817,"sku":"GOR014678090","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53487177498897,"sku":"GOR014943517","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1789146232.jpg?v=1766138259"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-nicholas-tromans.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
