Perceived to be an attempt by communists to destabilise the Sultanate and seize power, within twelve hours of its outbreak, British forces were despatched by ship and aircraft from Singapore to restore order, the first unit to arrive being 1\/2nd Gurkhas, who entered the capital.  Within the week, the 1 Queens Own Highlanders had recaptured the strategically important oilfields and occupied Seria, 42 Commando, Royal Marines attacked Limbang and 1 Green Jackets landed in west Brunei.  The next six months were spent rounding up TNKU and, since there were major concerns that Indonesia could be behind the Revolt, the charismatic Major General Walter Walker, then commanding 17th Gurkha Division, was sent to Brunei to command operations.  By mid-May 1963, the surviving TNKU had been captured.  While rapidly suppressed, the Revolt was the catalyst for the three year Confrontation with Indonesia 1963-66.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49508757963025,"sku":"GOR009732959","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50899886670097,"sku":"GOR014114543","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848846401.jpg?v=1751091779"},{"product_id":"commandos-in-exile-the-story-of-10-inter-allied-commando-1942-1945-book-nicholas-van-der-bijl-9781844157907","title":"Commandos in Exile: the Story of 10 (inter-allied) Commando 1942-1945","description":"Formed from members of Free Forces who had escaped from German occupation, 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando was one of the most unusual units in WW2. Whilst the histories of MI5 and MI6 have been well documented, the story of the officers and NCOs who pioneered army intelligence and security has remained largely untold. Introducing new techniques such as counter-intelligence, protective security, wireless interception and aerial photography, their dynamism prepared the ground for victory and the platform for modern military intelligence. Nicholas van der Bijl BEM chronicles the rise of intelligence on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, in the Middle East and in East Africa. For the first time ever, this comprehensive book puts together the previously lost pieces of the jigsaw that was military intelligence during the First World War.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666245230865,"sku":"GOR010256369","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50157285802257,"sku":"GOR011350804","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51356946235665,"sku":"GOR014237052","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0750956135.jpg?v=1751075813"},{"product_id":"commandos-in-exile-book-nicholas-van-der-bijl-9781399013857","title":"Commandos in Exile","description":"Formed from members of Free Forces who had escaped from German occupation, 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando was one of the most unusual units in WW2\\. Within months of the Argentinian defeat, General Edgardo Calvi, then the Argentine Head of the Army Joint Chief of Staff, was instructed to undertake a wide-ranging and formal inquiry to investigate the performance of the Argentine Army during the Falklands.     Calvi concluded that while the Army had the motivation, it lacked the organisation, equipment, training, and ability to oppose an army capable of operating in a variety of environments. The war exposed political, military, and public weaknesses in a period of considerable internal unrest during the seven years of the Dirty War. Several senior officers who fought in the Falklands were imprisoned for offenses committed during the Dirty War. Secrecy and political disagreements isolated the Service chiefs of staff from the logistic and operational planning. This book tells the story of the Falklands War from the Argentine Army perspective, written by a British soldier who served there in collaboration with Argentine historians and veterans. It adds an illuminating perspective on this conflict whose impact is still felt 40 years on.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49741509230865,"sku":"NGR9781636241647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49894110724369,"sku":"GOR013237186","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50386836095249,"sku":"CIN1636241646G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1636241646.jpg?v=1750992680"},{"product_id":"operation-banner-book-nicholas-van-der-bijl-9781473898950","title":"Operation Banner","description":"The book opens by setting the historic backdrop to The Troubles.  In summer 1969 the annual Loyalist marching season sparked violence in Londonderry which spread rapidly.  After three days of violence the British Government deployed troops in support of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.  Initially the Catholic community welcomed the Armys presence but this was to change over the years.  The first soldier was killed in 1971 and a further 48 died that year.  January 30 1972  Bloody Sunday  galvanised IRA recruitment and the British Embassy was burnt in Dublin.  The Official IRA bombed Aldershot HQ of the Parachute Regiment and in August 1972 the Army launched Op MOTORMAN to clear No Go areas.  Internment followed and the Province was firmly in the grip of sectarian violence.  The next 30 years saw a remorseless counter-terrorist campaign which deeply affected the lives of all the people of Northern Ireland and several generation of the British Army.  The Peace Process ground on for over ten years but the campaign formally ended in 2007 with the establishment of hitherto unimaginable power sharing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50684045656337,"sku":"GOR009172444","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50930816286993,"sku":"CIN1473898951VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473898951.jpg?v=1750827012"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-nicholas-van-der-bijl.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
